Article about no mans sky, seem pretty interesting. http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/02/artificial-universe-no-mans-sky/463308/ “The physics of every other game—it’s faked,” the chief architect Sean Murray explained. “When you’re on a planet, you’re surrounded by a skybox—a cube that someone has painted stars or clouds onto. If there is a day to night cycle, it happens because they are slowly transitioning between a series of different boxes.” The skybox is also a barrier beyond which the player can never pass. The stars are merely points of light. In No Man’s Sky however, every star is a place that you can go. The universe is infinite. The edges extend out into a lifeless abyss that you can plunge into forever.

So I know most of you probably don't care, but I think I have learned all I can about the horse Star Citizen. In 2012 a horse with very fine breeding was born in Great Britain. This un-named colt was then put up for sale in October 2013. At this point I'm almost sure Chris has nothing to do with this horse. This young colt being very well breed and at a distinguished event brought a lot of attention. Particularly from the prime minister of the UAE. Here is a little quote from the Tattersalls October 2013 summary about the purchase. Tattersalls posted:Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson sent to 160,000 guineas to secure the NEW APPROACH colt out of the Group placed FASLIYEV mare FASLEN, consigned by Peter Stanley’s New England Stud. The February-born colt was bred by Paddy Barrett, who was at Park Paddocks to watch his yearling sell. There are a few interesting tid-bits in all of this. First, This horse was bought around the time the original kickstarter began, and was not named at the time of purchase. Second, a significant amount of money was spent on this horse (more than 3 times the average for the day). This leads me to some educated guesses. I don't believe that Chris was involved with this horse at all now. It looks to me like the Sheikh first heard of star citizen the game just before or just after buying the horse. The fact that the horse was not named until after the kickstarter makes me think that UAE royal family is invested in star citizen (the game). Seeing that this horse cost them about $230,000 and has only made $50,000 in winnings it's probably only the second worst star citizen labeled investment they have made. tldr; Sheik Mohammed of the UAE bought and named Star Citizen the horse. He has almost certainly wasted a bunch of money on it as well as the non-game star citizen. I would probably be more worried about pissing them off than eastern Eurpoeans, but at least they probably don't care about the money.

Beer4TheBeerGod posted:Yes but is it fun? You obviously don't know anything about game development. The important things are immersion and fidelity. Star Citizens are expected to make their own fun. This should be a trivial task for them, as they've had years of practice making their own reality.

intardnation posted:reddit is serious stuff - no they think it is. Of course reddit should be taken seriously. That bigoted shithole has literally caused murders. Their little system of having closed off communities makes people voice more and more extreme opinions to fit in with the rest of the crowd seeing as redditors are socially retarded and desperate for approval. So then you get these little communities that churn out extremism to the point where you have your standard racist and bigoted communities but reddit did something new. It started several completely new hate communities about whatever loving nerd topic they think of that week. Like that one subreddit dedicated to not having children. Dude intentionally left his kid in a car to die, turns out he was a longtime user of that subreddit. Dylan Storm Roof himself on facebook said he loved reddit. There was a time several years in the past where reddit could've been not-poo poo if the moderators and admins enforced a strict set of standards but there are no standards and there have been no standards for a while. Reddit will continue to suck balls and churn out the odd death once every few months, maybe once a year something good gets done that should've been common sense in the first place like banning goddamn child porn or the entire racist subreddit network. Oh yea and they were adamant about KEEPING the loving child porn until Anderson Cooper reported on it.

Their PR, descriptions, and demos have been all about tech, which reveals their core focus/competency. I mean, who cares if you use a skybox? A giant infinite navigable star map is visually stunning, and a powerful statement about the boundless miracle of the universe, but this isn't a Discovery channel documentary. IMHO the most important moment in a game's design is when you decide what your player can't do. Limitation is what drives tension, choice, and consequence. NMS's prime directive seems to be building large-world tech to remove limitations. So if they want the thing to actually be fun, they either have to slap on some kind of "story" that just adds limitations again, or just say gently caress it and release Solitaire in Space. Either way, imo, they're in a tight spot. Toops fucked around with this message at 15:31 on Feb 19, 2016 |

Kord's guide to determining if you are a Star Shitizen Cultist. You use the following words unironically when discussing a video game and crowd funding: pledge, immersion, immerse, fidelity, bdsse, 'verse, citizen, open development, faith, trust. You are willing to accept that community managers and employees who's primary job it is to inform the people about their game are actually not reliable sources of information. You are willing to accept anything that Dear Leader says as 100% the truth and that any previous statement is to be invalidated by any new information. You are willing to accept that history is a work in progress. You discuss your investment/pledge/purchase with other individuals who have no idea what the game is in an attempt to get them to invest/pledge/purchase items from the same organization. You think that nobody outside of CIG has any concept of game development. You are willing to accept, without actual evidence, that a company will deliver a product based on faith/trust. You are dolvak, CmdrTom, B'tak, or any other idiot that actually believes that their opinion matters to a company that is fleecing you for your money. You think that having the option to pay to win vs play to win are not mutually exclusive within the same environment. You would rather spend money on concept art than groceries. You are willing to accept that a game without a design document being developed by 300ish employees across 2 continents by 4 separate organizations without actual oversight is going to be completed in any sort of semblance of the original pitch. You immediately dismiss any criticism as negative and assume that all that criticize are trolls. You can think that spending more money on a game than most people spend on family vacations/cars/college tuition and bragging about it somehow makes you interesting to those around you. You read the SA forums and unironically think that all SA members are out to get you. You unironically dislike Derek Smart for his crusade against a company that you have no actual vested interest in other than hoping you get a video game from them. I ran out of things off the top of my head. Is the game out yet?
