Chryssalids are the reason I still have medic Specialists around. I don't get hit by them often, but when I do, I wanna cure that poison as quickly as possible. I'm also not great at avoiding getting hit. Other than leaving a sniper on overwatch whenever I advance, I'm not too sure what to do to avoid it.
After a few missions with Chryssalids I've got a somewhat sensible strategy against them.

1. Scanning Protocol is important. You may even need two uses of Scanning Protocol on larger maps or if you had bad placement. Battle Scanners are nowhere near as effective and take equipment slots that are valuable when you should have Mimic Beacons (yes, Mimic Beacons against Chryssalids, dammit - they're overpowered but I'll take what I can if I only have ballistic weapons against them).
2. Move as much ground as possible so that Chryssalids attack as few civilians as possible - those spawns are the ones that will burrow and get the melee equivalent of overwatch bonuses against you. The pods of Chryssalids that are spawned at the beginning of a map do not get that kind of reaction against you.
3. Bladestorm rangers should be used to scout towards Chryssalids if possible to help get more damage against Chryssalids. Two rangers with Run & Gun is ideal so that you can move in multiple directions of vision if necessary (although you should alternate their cooldowns on R&G if possible so that the other can run over to support the other if necessary).
4. A sniper with high ground to maximize accuracy is important as well not only because of melee like Faceless and Chryssalids but because of Advent troops that take cover and slow down your pace of exploration to find more Chryssalid packs. Otherwise, you're best off using specialists and giving aim overwatch bonus tricks via Aid Protocol + Threat Assessment to grenadiers that are on overwatch covering your rangers as they explore.
5. Bring medkits on specialists. You will not be hacking anything, and your Aid Protocol + heals are most important here against Chryssalid poison (which slows down your map exploration which is so critical for managing Chryssalid reproduction rates)

Compared to my first campaign, my second Avenger defense was quite ... a different experience. First time I got it in the beginning months of the campaign, but now I was armed to the teeth - but still, my phantom ranger went out to spot the beacon and my sniper spent two turns shooting it down. Killed just a few straggler enemies near the Avenger.

Aside from 'Bring a Psiops' (My lab's construction completes in ~7 days) what's the best strategy to deal with archons? I went from flawless 75% of my missions to 3/6 wounded the second they showed up. Despite 70% hit chances I swear we're landing closer to 30% of our shots on them.

Shotguns to the face work pretty well for relatively high crit, 100% accuracy rates. Both of my rangers rolled Rupture too, so that helped a lot.

Holo-targeting can help, as well as explosives. Disoriented enemies have less movement and can't use certain skills (not sure if this applies to melee and blazing pinions), so try flashbanging them. Bring incendiary and gas grenades. Treat them like a raid boss: Stack your debuffs, more dots, more dots, okay stop dots, now hit it hard and fast.

faceoff is loving hilarious. that portal mission where you have to face that orb boss went by pretty easy with two Faceoff activations killing all the chrysalids, then using that Insanity Vortex on the other reinforcements which hosed them all up. I then used the psychic attack on the armored orb dude for max damage since lol armor doesn't matter against Mewtwo attacks. Psi Op dudes are just incredible; so glad I opted to build the psi lab ASAP.

Is there something what governs whether you actually get scanning targets after mission one? I'm futzing around a bunch on Legend Ironman, and it seems like 1/3 of the time after I finish the first mission, I go to the Geoscape and have to scan at home, whereas normally there's 2 targets right out the gate to go fetch.

It's pretty drat crippling since you waste 3-4 days before the first target shows up, and...yea. I can't figure out if it's a bug, or the game just going 'gently caress you'

Not a bug. On my current campaign I scanned about long enough to finish my first research project before an event popped up.

I want to second the gas grenades and/or incendiary. Poison reduces mobility and accuracy, meaning those archons aren't going to be getting near your dudes anytime soon, and even if they do, won't be hitting them very often. Also, gas grenades have a massive aoe, meaning it's easier to hit spread out enemies, (archons like to be separate from the rest of the pod) and won't destroy any cargo, cover, and mission objectives in in the area, so they are great for cargo missions and protect the objective etc.

Fire just plain makes them useless, as they only get one action a turn. But be aware that fire spreads REALLY fast, and will take a huge chunk out of building, maybe even the whole thing, so don't plan on using it for your own cover if there's another pod nearby.

Flashbangs are good for an immediate "oh poo poo" moment where your forward scout got jumped by a patrol and you don't want to hit him with a grenade, but they don't last long enough to really kill the drat thing.

Also, I don't think you need more than one type dot on the archon. They are just so crippling in this game i don't think it's necessary.

These are good for the children's brains.
Apart from the extremely brutal beginning, legendary/ironman was not all that terrifying. It was hell keeping a core of soldiers alive and ranking up through the missions up until magnetic weapons research and a couple of mimic beacons, but after that things were mostly smooth. With the boatload of tools available in the late game, it got to the point that every mission was flawless and I dragged things out months longer than necessary just to train a bunch of maguses, contact every region, put 3 superior mods on everybody's gun, etc.

Highlights were:

  • the Avenger defense where I went from 0 pods active to 4 pods active with my last soldier's move and miraculously walked away with everyone alive but heavily injured and/or unconscious and had to field teams of rookies for a month
  • getting a grenadier with the death from above ability, which led to her murdering half the aliens in any given mission and ending up with about triple the overall kills of any other soldier - something like 220
  • meticulously creeping around the final mission expecting a gigantic ambush because the vast majority of the enemies seemed to be missing, only to find this cleverly concealed pile of ~15 aliens which aren't even all visible in this shot

    which led to

Depends. I built the upgraded version and really only one or two guns actually did anything, but that's more because I didn't get my defense mission until the end of the game when I was a walking pantheon of gods.

It's sort of in a weird position because when you get shot down (if ever) seems to dictate its usefulness. I built it just because I reached a point where there wasn't any need to build other stuff and I got shot down really late game where my team was able to clean house and the turrets never even got to fire. It'd probably be more useful early on but then again that defense may never be needed and building it means you're not using supplies and engineers for stuff that certainly will be useful.

At this point I'm done with this. I've been trying to beat this one map for two and a half hours now but I can't find the last avatar and I can't keep up with the bottomless reinforcements.

Regarding the problem with shooting other controlled units:

I've noticed that while controlled units are viable targets, but they don't show up as in the display as targets unless you have selected a shooting option or targeted power. In general, when I play controlled units are usually my best shots because they are either positioned behind cover facing other enemies (and thus exposed to my troops), or I've placed them out in the open to give my troopers a better shot at them.

If you find that your controlled units are shooting each other, slow down and verify that you are actually shooting at what you think you are shooting at.

Currently my favorite Trooper is a Grenadier with a decent Stock and Ever Vigilant... early game she is basically my goto main team Concealment phase scout because her Overwatch will pretty much invariably shred that one Muton rear end in a top hat in a pod of Sectoids, making it easier for the rest of my team to murder the gently caress out of them.

Close second is a Specialist Major that I picked up from a random map point that came with Kill Zone. Gave her a stupidly huge clip mod and between her and my Psion lady that got Null Lance as her second power (:cawg:) they are goddamn amazing at setting up a field of death for the xrays to bumble through ineffectually. On the occasions I can take my Gunslinger with Faceoff that managed to get Holo-Targeting (holy poo poo this is an AMAZING combo) I literally just roll into large open areas, aggro everything, then just kill it all with extreme prejudice.

It's a lot of fun to break this game over your knee.

I haven't had the problem you describe but I've had plenty of times where I clicked a tile and moving the cursor a pixel makes the game think I intended to put a soldier on a different tile out in the open. I wonder if it might have something to do with how the targeting options seem to prioritize your MC'd units. Like, you move a guy into range of targets, and it'll show red icons indicating "hey here are guys to shoot." Then you open up the shoot menu and it'll start off highlighting the blue icon for the guy you mind controlled. Maybe the bug is something is not noticing when you click a different target and it prioritizes its initial choice--ie the guy you mind controlled.
