I kind of think DKC3 has the best bosses of the DKC SNES games. Well there's not much competition with DKC's giant sprites sliding around that you jump on. DKC2, though, is more debatable. DKC3's bosses felt more designed in general, despite some issues with some of them.

ahahahahha, okay yeah no. DKC3 has some of the worst bosses in the entire series, including Retro's. Though the water boss in Tropical Freeze will still be the worst, two of the bosses in this and the GBA exclusive boss are really bad too.

Yeah, Retro kinda phoned it in with these. In my opinion, it's sorta the same thing as with the more recent Mario games where your rewards for completing the main game are just harder versions of previous stages. Or in 3D Land's case, the entire second half of the game. Oh, and you have to go beat the first eight worlds over again as Luigi if you want to get to that last level. It's like, "Really? My only reward is a bunch of harder and usually much more tedious poo poo that I'm only doing for bragging rights?"

Really if you are going to 100% a game it's more for completionists sake than whatever the reward may be. From a designer's standpoint, why hold on to a really great reward when only 0.2% of your players will see it? And if it's something like a new move or ultimate weapon, then it makes no sense to give it to players after forcing them to complete all changes and no longer needing it.

I mostly agree with you, but for me, I'll take rewards that offer some form of replay value; in example, if you 100% something, why not unlock a secret character to play as that can carry over to a New Game+ (or equivalent)? The mirror version would also be pretty neat, but I like the idea of starting a stage from the end to the beginning, rather than just swapping perspectives. I'm not much of a completionist, so I have no real desire (or time, anymore) to go after things that would take me forever; bragging rights aren't really worth it for me.

For instance, mirror mode would be hella more fun if you had only diddy rather than donkey. It would at the very least give it some new flavor, rather than just being stupid hard and that's it.

I never finished the Golden Temple/magical psychedelic banana trip level because those puzzle pieces were too hard, and I thought at the time that you needed them for 100% completion. Turns out I didn't miss anything. You don't get anything for getting 200%, right? Other than bragging rights, but why would you brag about beating a mode that only really works well in racing games (and even then, not so much)?

Yeah, I was just talking in general. The Etrian Odyssey series has rewards that could trivialize the game but you don't get a New Game Plus that gives you armor or levels to play with it for the first three games. I dunno about the ones after that.

I agree that beating the game giving you something else to play with is really nice.

EOU and EO2U lets you play around with those toys if you want by doing an NG+ kind of deal. Had to beat the final boss first though, be it story mode or classic mode. Of course, it's recommended that in EOU that you do classic first. The entire POST GAME is locked to a story mode party if you don't reach it with a Classic party first.

The SNES one suffers greatly from hitbox. This one suffers greatly in that there is no legitimate threat in this fight. You never sit there and go "oh man I'm in trouble now". You just go "bombs need to hurry up and spawn already"

The DKC2 port is okayish. It lets you save anywhere in addition to saving at Wrinkly's college and does its best to replicate the feeling of the original SNES game. On the flip side...you have a dumb photo collection side quest Wrinkly drops on you that I believe does count towards the 102% completion, a pointless racing mini-game starring Expresso that Cranky offers, plus the painfully embarrassing mess that is Kerozene. It's a 50/50 deal, in all honesty.

The long-rear end attack patterns could get irritating, but I've been seeing it in a lot of games these last few years (hit the boss once, dodge a bevy of various attacks while the boss remains untouchable, repeat). Otherwise, the walrus viking (Lord Fredrik? or something) looked like a worthy final boss.

Game Over
Return of Mido

The jumps on his back are actually quite difficult to hit and if you don't manage to hit him three times in one cycle, you're going another round with him. By the end of the fight, when he dashes across very fast and the window to hit him is very slim, you miss the hits more than you get them. Couple this with the long attack pattern and the fact that his third phase attack patterns have a pretty good chance of killing you if you don't time your jumps correctly and it's just really disheartening when you die on the final hit.

Artix's fight actually went really well and made him look tolerable. I'd chalk it mostly up to experience. My first one against him didn't and if I remember old skype conversations correctly, Artix's first fight went worse than mine. It's a really challenging boss the first time you fight him and remains decently challenging even once you know all his tricks.

Riverside Race is (I believe) the other level which intends you to use Kiddy's water-skipping ability but doesn't technically require it. Remember that swarm of bees that will chase you? If you jump out of the water in the right place by a high cliff and deliberately get hit, your remaining Kong will get a vertical boost, allowing you to clear that cliff with ease. (Needless to say, it only works once before you grab another DK barrel.)

I always had trouble with riverside race as a kid... because I didn't know there was a run button.

Well yeah, it's your attack button and it doubles as a run button IF you hold it down, but why would you you've already attacked? Come on you had the barrels in sonic 3, I had this. (Not that I had a reason to try hard, a friend lent me their cart and all the levels were unlocked already).

I kind of wish more levels used the race gimmick. It helps that riverside race has some really tight design here. Pretty cool secrets.

The boss is another that is a lot harder for first time players, who have not figured out pro strats like "set the barrel down and hide in the corner instead of spazzing out and jumping around to dodge the green balls".

The biggest problem with Parry that the game doesn't really convey all that well is how his later appearances turn out. What seems like a short trip at the end in Squeals on Wheels grows exponentially in later levels, with some becoming full blown escort missions through at least 85% of the level. But you have to because Parry is heavily tied into the game's full completion percentage. Also, we've seen the only time Parry's reward is a simple one, being a 3-Up in this case.

The rest of the rewards? :shepicide: is all I can say to those.

Chapter DOOF

I think my issue is that DKC3 feels like the second game in a series. Tries some new stuff, mixes things up a bit, mixed results (see: Dark Souls 2) The levels (so far) are pretty solid, it's the later levels that get sketchy.

Plus the level set up is weird. Random snow level in the first world?

We've already had 2+ Ellie-centric levels with her showing up in more, Enguarde and Parry(:argh:) have made very brief appearances. In DKC1 and 2 we'd seen almost every animal buddy already after the first two worlds.

The music is a mixed bag. Some are quite forgettable but the good ones give Wise some competition (a certain level type we haven't seen yet has the best music in the series IMO).

I find that to be incredibly short-sighted, to be honest. We've seen Ellie three times (which is understandable as she is the biggest new animal buddy), Squawks once, Enguarde once, and Parry once, with Squitter and Quawks both being introduced in World 4 (or 3, but Mekanos is generally considered 4 iirc) and Parry and Enguarde getting World 3 more or less to themselves. If they had stuck Squitter somewhere in World 2, it would have been basically identical to how DKC1 and DKC2 rolled them out.

DKC3 has a lot more Animal Buddy involvement than the previous games. I'd say at least half the levels give you at least the option to use them, and this time around the barrels outnumber the crates.

It's because Cranky's cane extends your hitbox down, so you have better control to hit him. Basically instead of merely dropping at the speed the game wants you to drop you can reach down and force the Kong duo to bounce off of Fredrik.
