That's a crit.
A good use for 4 of those 5 points is to make your SpecOps a hacker+engineer. That covers a lot of bases.

EDIT: The Hafza profile is nice because it comes with Holoprojector 1, which lets you disguise your SpecOps as something other than a hacker. The look on an opposing player's face when that "Odalisque" turns out to be a hacker is usually priceless.

oh nice okay made him a engineer/hacker, might try the holoprojector trick but not sure i have a good model to use that might be a good disguise, maybe my fiday? Might just make him a ghulam and fit in even more models, I'm going to try the 5 point Daylami's since I never ever pass that PH role for infiltration.

What's standard xp for a spec ops? The group I play with always does 12 so she'll be effortlessly scrambling over barriers while hacking objectives, repairing drones, and patching up soldiers, all while styling on the opposition with her assault pistol for a mere 10 points.

Yep, 12 XP is standard for 300 points. I'd assume it scales with point limit.

I was lucky enough to pick up my local store's last Limited Edition BIG ACHILLES the other day, the guy behind the counter knew I played Steel Phalanx and had kept one aside for me.

Now I've spent hours painting the big lad up, is he even worth using? I was considering something like this:

A guy I play with ran a similar 250 point list and got smoked hard. He had too much invested in Achilles and Penny and lost them to some unfortunate scenarios.

I could see that being a problem to be honest. I suppose unlike an Asura you don't get a nice visor with Achilles so enemy camo will wreck you.

In this particular game, Achilles got stuck in a lane staring down the business end of a sniper rifle and Penny failed her armor save 13 times against a light flamethrower. Maybe you'll have better luck with the extra 50 points but that was the first time I saw both of them in the same list.

I'm thinking the issue is that Penthisilea was a decent guided missile back in the day, but the increase in Shock ammo weapons has made her much more vulnerable-and she's not really good enough at CC to outfight CC specialist blockers. She's also competing for orders with Achilles, who is going to be charging in to murder things-who isn't as fast (6-4 versus 8-6 means he's moving at 2/3rds the speed) but is much better at surviving a contested approach because he has BS15 instead of BS13, gives no fucks about Shock ammo, and can eat 2 wounds without even starting to give a gently caress.

Also, as a note your list is using the V1 Achilles. The Limited Edition Swole Achilles is the V2, who loses ODD and downgrades Kinematika L2 to L1 for +2 ARM, Mimetism, and advanced deployment. He's a tad less good at playing rangeband keepaway, but is a fair bit less vulnerable to cheap suicide flamethrowers.

Having used Shinobu, WIP 14 nanopulsers on ODD models are actually better than you would think. She doesn't bring her own smoke, but steel phallus has smoke to spare, and bikes are crazy fast, and the giant base lets them hang really far out of the smoke while still being in it.

Haven't played new Achilles, but old one was a nightmare to deal with once he hit your line, and I'm assuming if 2.0 has the same combat stats and speed he should be the same.

Really the rest of your list needs to be focused on getting things out of the way so he can make it there, or picking off any threats that can stop him. One game I had against him, I loaded up a few flame and MSV units to slow him down on his side of the board, only for a few jump troops to disrupt my defense. And when he got to my lines it was brutal (though eventually did die to Sun Tze of all things).

Haven't had any real problems with Pen in that regards. She's a bit too fragile to cause as much damage despite her speed. Stuff like Shinobu or Oniwaban are as effective as they are because of their infiltration capability - and even then you'll only really take out (or try to) a key unit or two before they eventually get blown up.

Yeah but in that case you've probably moved your Myrm link team into combat range, and if you had, say, Phoenix in that team, he could fire two WIP 14 nanopulsers through that smoke. Remember that everyone and their mother on Steel Phalanx has a nanopulser.

That must be a problem with Army V, I was sure I selected "Achilles v2 (Hoplite Armour)" in the thing but it put him in the list as regular Achilles.

It's a shame Penthesilea isn't as good as she used to be, both her variants are among my favourite Infinity models of all time.

Ran some 200pt games with my usual opponent going vanilla Haqq and Military Order vs QK using 20x20. Haqq game was just my standard Saladin/Fiday shenanigans which is good when it pays off. We called it after two turns with the Fidays both getting right into his forces and him failing a bunch of his Yuan Yuan rolls.

Next game I tried out using guided/targetting/speculative stuff, which I haven't used since N2 really. Had some Spec. Sergeant FOs, a SML bot and a Montessa. Managed to mark his Scarface at the cost of a Spec. Sergeant, then proceeded to fail four guided shots at 12s thanks to ECM. Spent the last order lobbing a speculative grenade at a link team which took out a medic. He dropped a bunch of Yuan Yuans on me the next turn and basically took out the rest of my knights and bots so we called it there.
It's definitely an interesting tactic - and if I had managed to down his Scarface early without wasting so many order on the Smart Missile Launcher I would have had free shots on his link team with my grenade launcher. Still probably would have gotten Yuan Yuan spammed but would have made it closer. Probably more suited for larger point games when I don't have to commit so much to the tactic - or maybe just run the SML and not the Montessa. I'll probably give it another run with more emphasis on protecting my back line.

I don't completely disagree, but I don't completely agree either. Links are unwieldy compared to single models, and bikes are in another world when in comes to mobility. 8-6 on the table is so far for so few orders.

Bikes and smoke are so abusive if the bikes can attack without LOS. One smoke cloud lets bikes melee anything in a 9.3 inch wide zone, and the 8 inch move is so effective and getting on target and the getting away. Especially if they are regular impetuous.

Then adding on the intuitive pulser on a model that can dive deep with a 14 inche move, is solid.

I guess I look at it from JSA, I know for a fact bikes that can melee are dumb good. I know for a fact ODD with a pulser is situationally good. I know for a fact that a template on a bike is good. Penny is all three in one package, minus the smoke. 44 points is kinda spendy, but regular impetuous bikes are so efficient in the wild, so dunno.

The problem is that your bikes are pretty cheap and losing one to kill one or two 20pt models is probably a huge net gain. Penny is 44 points which means if you're using her she's probably going on suicide runs against really high-cost enemies. JSA bikes are good because they're really good at tying up expensive models or suiciding on more costly enemies, and you have plenty of orders to pump into these units-but the Steel Phalanx has tons of very powerful, fast, and deadly models which are all competing for the orders you get.

Remember, the JSA's basic cheerleader is 9 points, while the Steel Phalanx can take 6 13 point MI and then their cheapest infantry unit is the 16 pt Myrmidon. You have fewer orders and tons of things to compete with them in Steel Phalanx, and the list we're talking about already includes Achilles, who is basically a S2 TAG which has the CC and martial arts to be heavily resistant to a really good way of tying down a TAG and making them hard to use-cheap melee troops.

So I'm going to a tournament next month, 3 missions are due to be Cold Sleep, Supplies, Antenna field. Anyone got any tips? I'd like to try and work out before whether I'll pick 1st turn, 2nd turn, or deployment, etc given the chance.

My only other immediate takeaway is that Doctors are ace for 2/3. Might change an Alguacil FO to a 2nd paramedic, and take 2 Tomcat doctors?

So had my first ever game using ITS missions (nimbus zone) and it confirmed I'm right to be wasting so much time at work reading rules. It was great, lost 2 to 5 but nearly got the control command consoles points, just had a some nomad dodge 4 separate heavy flamer shots and stay on the command console!

I nearly killed all his people but because he managed to hack better and do a classified mission he won which I love, I'm going to be much more aggressive next time and make sure have more specialists too, though the amount of WIP 14 doctor plus rolls I failed did put me in a lovely position since i lost tons of medics and specialists i was trying to heal.

The one thing im not sure on is how i'm meant to push loads of people up the field without fireteams, i had loads of people sitting at the back since i just used all my orders on pushing specialists up the field, is my only choice combined orders? should i be using those early to get groups of people where they can be more effective?

Also my Lasiq sniper is so good, just wish I had someone who could see into smoke. Also gonna need to find a way to defend my Janissary from hacking though he was the only one who could roll doctor saves.

You should be doing this 100% - especially if you're getting first turn. I almost always use my last regular order and a command token to put four heavy hitters into suppressive fire so that I'm covering objectives.

If you're going first your opponent can reduce one of your order pools by two orders, or they can limit you to using one command token. Personally I always find it more troublesome when I'm limited to using one command token.

I've usually used up my command tokens, or maybe have one left on my last turn.

Command Tokens are usable by anyone, and go a long way to evening out the lack of Link Teams in Vanilla versus Sectorial armies. In my opinion coordinated orders are actually better than Link Teams in many instances.

Dang, missed those rules, to be honest i'd put off trying to cram coordinated orders and stuff in my head til i tried a scenario but I felt i had a handle on most of the rules this time without checking the wiki too often so this is next to revise. Wish i'd been this diligent in my exams.

If i play around with my list to fit a Djanbazan in so I can see through smoke would a sniper rifle or HMG be the best bet? It feels like HMG and then I can keep my Lasiq Viral sniper rifle cos that thing is fecking deadly

If you already have a sniper, definitely HMG.

So friends are dragging me into this, and I don't mind as Yu Jing look pretty cool.

Any good advice for new players? I've played a bunch of other wargames, but nothing quite this small scale.

Start with a "3 basic troops per side" battle to learn how orders/AROs work, move on to simple 200 point battles (because 300pts is jumping into the deep end and there's tons of nasty poo poo that you'll encounter at that level). Don't use more than 1 type of special unit (camo, AD, hacker, etc.) at first, introducing them one type per battle is a reasonable speed unless you're confident that you won't get overwhelmed with a ton of special rules.

Have 70+% of your orders on the table, i.e. not in HD / AD.

ed: Also, Micro Art Studio is about to launch their new Kickstarter (later today?) for Infinity terrain. They sent me some samples from the new stuff and I can confirm they improved their designs a lot. Plus they've got new poo poo like resin cars and mats in 1' tiles.

ed2: MAS KS is live.

One of the Yu Jing starter boxes + Yu Jing support box is a good starting purchase. That should cover about 150 or 200 points depending on the starter.
Then just add cool looking miniatures, if you feel like it. They're all good*


*Not equally good, but there are no duds in this game.

If you want to go full ninja samurai, a good growth list for JSA is:
starter + Keisotsu HMG + Keisotsu ML gives you a 150pt list
Aragoto box + Asuka box + Yaokong box (assemble as reaction/sensor) + Warcor will push it to full 300 pts
Link the Keisotsu, make the plain ones FOs/paramedics to fill points/have flash pulse AROs, and you've got a decent WYSIWYG 300pt list with nothing left over.
