It's the same for enlisted personnel in the military. So they're not rich by any means but they're sure as hell buying more luxury goods and taking way more vacations than non-cops.

Police Officers in Oakland CA make about 90 - 100k before overtime and benefits. Overtime is a big thing too. When I was working for the state university, I paid into the public employee retirement system instead of SS, which means that most of a decade of labor earned me poo poo-all for retirement. So yes I'd imagine that most state and probably municipal police pay into their state PERS rather than SS.
