This is a girl who at 24 has never held a job before. This was literally her first job and she HAD to live in of the most expensive cities in the world because her sleepy life in Los Angeles was KILLLLIIIING HEEERRR, GUUUYYSSSS. It's not just San Fran, but if she was in London or Paris or basically any big city that people really want to live in, she would have to get a roommate or two, and budget her living expenses wisely until she can work her way to a better wage. Like that's not a political statement, that is literally how it's always loving been, everywhere.

I think she must have been pretty delusional about her "career path" being entry-level call center rep --> #socialmediaspecialist in a year. They probably mentioned something about advancement but probably meant like getting into management of the call center or something. It's like if IBM started you in the mail room for a year before making you a software engineer.

Do Americans not have freedom of movement? Like, the right to live and work wherever you want in the country? Because otherwise you end up just ghettoizing the poor oh wait...

lol at the people still defender her. As I said several pages back, she could have easily afforded to live in SF proper, in a nice neighborhood if she had simply found some roommates that had a rent controlled apartment. But no, "I am a 25 year old with a liberal arts degree and no real world experience, and I am entitled to my own apartment, at market rate, in the second most expensive city in the US! What?? My minimum wage job won't let me afford that? This country is hosed! Maybe if I write my CEO, he will make me vice president of tweets and pay me the $150k/yr I DESERVE!"

Got to love Yelp though. "We are here located in the tech nirvana of startups, everything is expensive in a 40 mile radius, and we make 20 million in profit a quarter. Now how much should we pay our peons. Oh yeah, loving Mcjob wages lol. More shares for me!'

Cockmaster posted:No, you should believe the hard data and math which shows that $8 an hour is absolutely not sufficient to live with any reasonable standard of human dignity in most of the US. Especially if one's idea of living with human dignity includes being able to maintain a basic emergency fund, or pursue the sort of education which most middle-class careers demand. I believe the data that the minimum wage is too low both for the moral / humanistic reasons and the pure economics that higher income is good for the economy as a whole. I don't believe that there will ever be a solution to desirable places having a cost of living that can balloon to arbitrarily high figures, especially in a place like SF where there is both a limited land area and the special extra factor of dense vertical housing being super-expensive because it's on a massive fault line. It's a supply and demand thing that has no good solutions. And rather than buying into a lot of stories of the woeful life of the SF worker who barely earns enough to afford their rent and trying to fix SF, we should be trying to invest in and fix the rest of the country.

I left college, having majored in English literature, with a dream to work in media. It was either that or go to law school. Or become a teacher. But I didn’t want to become a cliche or drown in student loans, see.

A whole year answering calls and talking to customers just for the hope that someday I’d be able to make memes and twitter jokes about food. If you follow me on twitter, which you don’t, you’d know that these are things I already do. But that’s neither here nor there. Let’s get back to the situation at hand, shall we? e:pretty sure that's the point where someone who works for the CEO stopped reading and fired her...so what's the problem?

I worked a call center job in an expensive city (Los Angeles) but they had the decency to pay $16/hour and offer amazing benefits, plus I got promoted in 6 months and made even more money. gently caress Yelp and their penny pincher ways, but goons have to hate on this girl because she dared to speak up and she didn't make all the perfect decisions.

Let’s talk about those benefits, though. They’re great. I’ve got vision, dental, the normal health insurance stuff — and as far as I can tell, I don’t have to pay for any of it! She didn't just not "make all the perfect decisions," she made a series of legitimately terrible decisions and seems incapable of acknowledging the possibility that some of this was her fault. Don't act like Yelp is luring away starry-eyed recent grads from all over the country to work for a pittance answering phones.

Yelp is poo poo, but its user base is Total poo poo. People write grandiose, rambling descriptions of how cool they are, and then give a brunch place a bad review because there was a 30 minute wait on a summer Sunday. I guarantee you this woman has typed out thousands of reviews complaining about how a waiter looked like her high school English teacher or something.
