Yeah that's still poo poo for the bay area, but I seriously doubt her job even requires a college degree or any work experience.

See i've thought a lot about this over the last year, and the idea that you get paid based on the skills you need to do the job, is a really flawed idea. Shouldn't instead it be based on the cost of living for the area you are in? It would certain encourage tech companies to gently caress off and leave California if this were the case. They would spread out over the U.S. creating jobs in cheaper areas and help out poorer communities. At least in theory. In reality they would probably all gently caress off to China, so lmao I have no idea really.

I'm on board with this, that's basically what I was advocating.

Most jobs in a service industry based economy (which is what we are) can't actually be outsourced effectively, believe it or not. Most tech companies that outsource to India end up with endless tales of gently caress ups that they then have to go fix which ends up costing more time/money in the end and we've already lost most of the manufacturing jobs anyway.

There's that, too.

Should be interesting to see what happens when automation of labor really takes off and there's really just not enough work for the entire population of job seekers.

College graduates were rarer 50 years ago. A BA in english lit isn't much more impressive than a high school graduation these days. Back in the day a girl with an english iit degree wasn't looking for a job at all, she was looking for a husband. Getting married is like having a roommate, except you don't even get your own bed to your self.

As far as I know my grandparents lived at home until they got married. Then they had a tiny apartment and literally had orange crates as furniture. No college degree, but they both worked. By the time I was born they had a nice house with nice furniture, but they'd been married and collecting stuff for 25 years by then. Starting out has always sucked.

Are you saying you should get paid more for the same job in areas that are expensive to live? Because if so, that already exists and has for a long time (at least for white collar jobs). Here is an example of salary by state for comparable jobs: http://salarybystate.org/tag/computer-software-engineer-salary-in-2013 There is a huge difference based on where you live. And this is more exaggerated for certain cities.

also,

Percent of high school grads that went on to college in 1966 was 50.1%, starts to get to 60% by the 80s.
Today it is 65% (low income hs grads are at 45.5%)

https://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d99/d99t187.asp

I dunno that degrees were really all that much rarer. They were certainly cheaper. Starting out is always hard but I bet your grandparents didn't have to work 2 jobs each just to make ends meet. They still managed to save money - most Americans today don't because they live paycheck to paycheck.

Back in the day a girl with a english lit degree didn't need a job because the husband's income was enough to support a whole family. lol at that concept today.

Internaut! posted:

Most corporation scale pay based on geographic location to scale for cost of living adjustments. So, they generally refer to a primary dollar amount and adjust accordingly. NY, for example, at my company is about 2x higher than the base salary rate in dollars.
