I've got a little brother printer and my stuff is black and white so I print my minis out at home. 36 pages is about the most you can get away with without having to trim the edges neat I think.

I think as far as price goes I think $5-8 is usually what I've seen them go for? I guess it depends on page count and printing costs. You might also price a fully contained short story different than a sampler.

People with multiple kinds might also do discounts if you buy more than one. Like $6 each but three for $15. I've never really sold minis before though, I've mostly given them away. People might trade stuff with you, though, that's always cool.

I've never printed a mini comic for cons before - how big do y'all usually make yours? Also, I might pass them out or might sell them, what's a decent price?

Mine are the 'Manga' size off of Kablam! Printing. I sell them for $7/24 pg.

Be careful selling...You need a seller's permit for the area, date, and time you're selling. Also not sure if the con frowns or embraces people selling on their own if they don't have a table.

Trading is cool though, when in doubt, trade!!

Okay, first you have to figure out what size you're printing them at. The standard is an 8.5x11 sheet but who knows. Maybe your art won't be readable at that size.

And the print shops in Boston are all pretty familiar with minicomics and zines. You might be able to skip most of this and just hand them your files. I suggest doing the hands on method at least once, to give you a better understanding of every level of the process.

Once you're sure about that then take a few sheets of scrap paper equal to the amount of pages divided by four plus another page for the cover (so a twenty page mini would have 6 pages, a twenty four page mini would have 7 pages etc). Fold them up into the shape of the book and write "cover" on the cover, "inside cover" on the inside cover, and then page 1, page 2 and so on. After you're done with that then disassemble the mockup and use it when you're laying out your book for printing. When I was a youngling I just slapped the pages down in Open Office and exported a PDF. Nowadays I use Scribus for the same effect.

Then do a test print. Fold it together, make sure it's laid out right. If not figure out how to fix it. Otherwise, print more. Print shops usually have trimmers and long arm staplers. You'll save money doing it yourself so that's what I'd go with.

As for price, it's pretty much whatever you can get away with. Most of the minis I see tend to be around $5 these days. Generally that's for rather long black and white minis or short full color minis. My rule of thumb is 3x the print cost, and I'll end up trading or giving away a chunk of books.

Also I think the font looks fine, although I would reduce the space between lines.

It's lookin great so far! My only real comment is maybe to consider the hierarchy of characters/their environment/all that good blocking jazz a little more when you're setting up a scene. Like, obviously you're goin for a sort of flat style, but there's moments where the "camera" could be positioned a little differently, like making queenie seem a little smaller in panel 3 (her pose is workin well tho) or in the last panel, just like moving the vanage point a little so the door isn't cut off in such the way that it is.

Does anyone have any particularly good tips for doing speech bubbles digitally? I'm a little paranoid lately that I'm going to accelerate some kind of carpal tunnel if I hand write my bubbles and text unless I slow down my process a lot to make more time for that (which could be just as well). As a result I'm hoping to get a better handle on doing it digitally still, especially since I've been attempting to slowly improve my abilities to use Manga Studio.

LET'S GET TO THE TOP!
Manga Studio has speech bubbles built in, it's a subtool of the text tool. They need a little adjusting so they're not perfect ellipses but they're otherwise pretty great.

Smets

Manga Studio also has a "Balloon Pen" tool, if you prefer a hand-drawn shape. You draw in your balloon, it's automatically filled with white (or whatever color you choose), and if you draw it around text, the balloon layer will automatically incorporate it. And everything remains fully adjustable. It's very useful!

I came across something called PressKit(), which has a marketing tool designed for indie games that can be mutated into a general press hub. It's supposed to set up a fast media-friendly site for reviewers to find hi-res assets and press releases - it seems pretty handy!

If you're doing promotional stuff for your projects, it may be worth looking into. You'll need some PHP know-how and the ability to edit XML files, but it wasn't super-technical.

Since we launched ours, I've seen a couple of press articles that have clearly used large chunks of it!
Our instance is up at: http://tocomix.com/press/

This is blowing my mind, because I literally knew gently caress-all about comics in 2013 when I signed up for a writing class. It has been a bananas ride.

If anything, this stresses how crazy important it is to have a press release or a press site - when you launch a project or a Kickstarter, DO IT. You can send stuff to Comics Alliance at: http://comicsalliance.com/creators/

This was a former test page I did but I realized I have a short side story that this fits well in, so I'm working on that before getting into the nitty gritty of full stories.

Readability of the word bubbles is something I need to smooth out with these next few pages

Confession... I am a pimp. I pimp my woman, the one I made. She is a drawing. She is a nudist. She is an individual, one simultaneously complex and rounded; complex in the spelling of her name, rounded in the parabola of her breasts, the awesome flare of her hips, the ever-so-slightly parted lotus petals of her suntanned rear end. Sometimes she is brown. Sometimes she is blue. Sometimes she is full of cosmic understandings. I am a spectrum. All humans are spectrums. And my character is a spectrum too: the spectrum of Character Fulfilment, where 10 is magnificent nubile sleek and shiny nakedness, and 0 is one of those burqas with a mesh over the eyes. Finally, and most importantly, she waxes every three days and she never, ever forgets her sunscreen.

The Toronto Comics Kickstarter finally made it! I can almost breathe again.

We're sitting at 107% with three days to go, which means I wasn't doing the white-knuckle shuffle until the last minute, thank god.

So let’s talk marketing and revenue sources!

Revenue sources
The advantage of an anthology is that you can draw on the social media connections of all your contributors. Partnering with webcomic creators who have longstanding audiences has definitely paid off.

* 25% Kickstarter discovery audience
* 31% Direct traffic ( I want to say this is from news articles, podcasts, etc. but it’s impossible to know )
* 14% FB shares
* 11% Twitter.
* 3% Reddit
* 2% Comics Alliance
* .4% Something Awful

I’ll post an update once I have final numbers.

Physical marketing

March had to be our Kickstarter month, because the Sarnia Pop Culture Show and Toronto ComiCon both hit a weekend apart. We knew advertising during those events would be crucial to reaching new audiences, and so we printed 200 12-page free samples) of the upcoming book, at a production cost of $1.75 each. We also printed 1,000 business cards advertising the KS, and gave away about half of them.

After the ComiCon weekend, we saw a 10% jump in pledges, but I don’t know how much of that the booklet was responsible for. Maybe none? But it helped us look like serious business, which I think has value.

Online Marketing
We also emailed every podcast and news site we could find asking for coverage requests, and we were surprised at how many got back to us. People want to hear about your comics! If you want to launch a product, these are good people to talk to.

I feel like having a good press site also helps, and http://tocomix.com/press/ has been something I’ve got good feedback about from media folks.

Endorsements
We’ve also gone out of our way to get endorsements from industry figures.

I feel like comics is a very word-of-mouth dependent industry, and with so many competing books out there, a familiar face recommending something has enormous power. We sent folks a preview copy of our finished book, as well as samples of our previous books so they’d be able to make an informed decision. A number of the endorsers were kind enough to signal boost our Kickstarter, which was also a big help.

Paid advertising
Acting on advice from here and other sources, I didn't bother. Seems to have paid off so far!

My impulse is to say that it's a bit long-winded and meandering for a straightforward gag comic (brevity is the soul of wit, etc.). In particular I feel like you could chop off those last 4 panels and lose nothing - that pattern of "funny character says funny line, beat panel, straight man calls funny character an idiot" is something that I think betrays a lack of confidence in the actual joke.
