Beat the game on commander ironman. It's a ton of fun but I think I'm done with it until a few balance patches or DLC from now. The early game is unforgiving in a good way, but even on commander once you get a single mimic beacon the difficulty curve drops way down. By the late game I was carrying four and could do all sorts of kamikaze-ish things without worrying about it.

Unlike everyone else I still really loved the final mission even on ironman. Rather than try to cheese I just set up in the SE corner and tried to murder everything without having too many things from the left side join in too early. It was close but it worked and gave a really nice sense of just barely managed doom the whole way through.

Yeah honestly the mimic beacon really needs a nerf. I'm playing on L/I and bringing 3 beacons (+ a stasis psionic) basically allows the squad to casually buldoze through tons of aliens and still come out flawless most of the time. The moment you get one beacon the game just gets much much easier and it just snowballs from there, particularly on shorter missions.

It needs to have less hp or not be able to use cover or only have 50% chance of being targeted or something.

Prob needs to be 1 use and then need to build again but it's invulnerable so it wastes the entire enemy turn - something like that.

Items in general need some bigtime rebalancing. Most armors aren't worth building. I can't imagine using smoke grenades even if they worked unless they had some really significant buffs or something

That said, late game poo poo on legend is no joke even with mimic beacons. When you're dealing with 2-3 archons and andromedons and sectopods ... you need mimic beacons. It's just too much health to chew through.

Perhaps some of the Suit armours should have a Vest-only slot or something. Though maybe that's a bit too powerful? But there's literally no reason to take vests except kinda on Psi-ops since their main concern is not losing days of investment, and they neither need to shoot nor need more abilities.

Cut the Warden armor from +6hp+1armor to +5hp/+1armor/Bonus Vest? Or maybe swap the WAR Suit / EXO Suit from a bonus armor to a bonus Vest slot? Or maybe a completely new armor type, in addition to EXO/WAR and Spider/Wraith, with the bonus vest slot. Modular/Fractal.

Always thought the Grenade-only slot on the Grenadier was a great idea, and I wish they expanded it to the other utility items as well. Vests are severely underused compared to ammo items and mimic beacons for good reason.

Yeah Commander is a big leap up from Veteran but it's like both X-com and Xcom EU in that if you can just hang in there and get out of the poo poo tier weapons and armor and into magnetic weapons and plate armor so you have some survivability and can actually hit the things your shooting at sometimes it will even out. I don't think the difficulty breaks down too easy like the original game and EU though, because the aliens have a lot more tricks now than just a lot of HP. Even with mimic beacons and scout rangers. The Beaglerushes out there are finding it too easy but I'm still losing people and having plenty of close calls to keep it entertaining.

Someone's probably already had something like this happen and this thread is getting big, but I had a faceless attack a guy I had bound up by a viper, hurting both him and the viper and canceling bound. I was evacing without much time left on an escort so that faceless probably saved that guys life.

I figured, that's why I mentioned my favourite strategy to counter the bastards :v: Phantom Ranger can also sneak people out of the hot zone without getting shot at.

Something else I learned today, while retaliation missions are the subject, civilians can't get rescued by mind controlled units, they just flee in terror. I'm not sure why I thought it would work, but it was still funny

Boone is possibly my favorite companion, though he is a little... stoic. If i find it not to difficult to chop of dialogue I may do Caesar next, just because I love listening to him talk. Maybe ED-E too. There's a lot of fantastically voiced people in New Vegas, so it's a great target for things to pull from. And because of the very mod friendly nature of the game, extracting audio from it is super easy. Though if there's other games that are easy to pull clean audio from (or there's a youtube of the clean audio) I'm down for that too.

They really are. I always go for Gatekeepers with my Dominate when available. My magus-level psi op has something like a 79% chance to successfully dominate them, and when she succeeds, it not only instantly removes the biggest threat in the level, it also buys you more time than a mimic beacon because it's such a great bullet sponge.

I wish there was a vest only slot in addition to the normal slots we have. I want to use some of the vests, but I rather have explosives and ammo.

I want to mod that in, but probably would have to nerf the base armors then.

That's because it's a bug. Community bug fixes may be the best part of mods.

It's in the Unreal Scripts rather than the config files. If you go into the X2Effect_ApplyDirectionalWorldDamage you can find DamageEvent.Hitlocation = SourceLocation; where SourceLocation seems to be the Grenadier's location. Increased Squad Size Expansion + or whatever. It's a modded (by the OG modder) version of the basic one that boosts all pod sizes. This one boosts late game stuff so you're seeing more mixture.

That was probably the biggest pod I've seen yet in a Vet game. Was scary too. I run the Pod size mod because I run the Starting Squad increase mod that gives you 6 troops (with upgrade to 8)

Honestly it makes me wonder whether it's possible to get a sniper with rapid fire, which would just be nutty, assuming it didn't conflict with squad sight.
My Sniper procced Rapid Fire with the AWC, but it conflicts with Squadsight. She's pretty awesome mid-range when I have the option between pistoleering and just taking two shots with the rifle. Don't forget about the -15 Aim from Rapid Fire and loss of more Aim due to range, though, and be ready to invest in either an auto-loader or bigger magazine.

EDIT: My Rangers rolled Shredder and Salvo, and my Corporal Grenadier rolled Run and Gun (!). Salvo on a Ranger is kind of crap if you're not carrying grenades, but Shredder was handy early on when I chose Blast Padding for my first Grenadier. This L/I run is going really well despite losing like four people, including a Specialist who also got Run and Gun. One more month and I get Warden Armor! :D

how can you possibly have a 60% chance to hit if you hit them with a grenade? are you intentionally leaving their cover up?

edit: tbh ive done a commander run and im mostly through a legendary run and i dont think i've ever let a muton get a turn (except to attack a mimic beacon because they're idiots that punch them instead of shoot). they're one of the weakest, shittiest enemies in the game if you arent trying to hit them with a sword

you should basically be killing every pod visible (or mitigating them with stasis/beacon/etc) so dont be afraid to get closer to them to finish them off

Because I have standard grenades and not all cover gets destroyed by them. Also no they aren't one of the weakest and shittiest, they are the boss of early game and Centurions are probably the first 3 armor enemies you see heading into midgame on Commander. If you compare them to only late game stuff yeah, but if you do that then you are arguing in bad faith and assume I am dumb enough to not notice it I guess? I have a grand total of one scope and a bunch of midrange troops, so firing at something with innate defense, possibly behind low or high cover that withstood a grenade, at medium-long range can easily top out at 60% or so. I am quickly learning how deadly uncovering more map is in Commander compared to Vet, so flanks tend to be out of the question in many situations.

Also, no mimic or stasis yet. Not sure why you assume a person who says they just hit Mag would have a Psi Op with a specific ability, but I have also just been unlucky with Faceless, as I only have one spare after the autopsy at the moment.
