I have a Jazzmaster so the pickguard literally holds the entire thing together.

There are a couple ways of picking where you can hit the body, mostly with your fingernails though. It gets scratched up instead of the wood. Fender style guitars use the pickguard to cover things up because they do top-routs and attach the electronics to the plastic because that way you just do all the electronics assembly (ground wire excepted) on the pickguard then stick it on there. Making things easy to do factory-style was pretty much the Leo Fender Way.

i don't like les pauls but if I had to play one it would be with a pickguard (or a Jr.) so that my fingers have a flat surface to reference while picking. I've played Fenders for so long that anything with a carved top feels weird to me

kjetting posted:Do pickguards really have a function anyway? I have guitars both with and without, and the guitars I have with pickguards are built after the strat principle where it's covering the hole where the electronics go. On those guitars it at least has a function as a lid. If you strum sloppily you can scratch your guitar. I rarely hit mine on guitars when I get erratic in my playing. A lot of guitars it is an aesthetic thing.

The Klon Centaur/Bill Finnegan saga is pretty stupid music poo poo: https://aionelectronics.com/project/refractor-centaur-overdrive/ (link is selling a $10 diy kit and I have nothing to do with it but has the story in the "circuit history" section) The story has everything: nerds, bluesdads, overdrive pedals made in some guy's apartment going for thousands of dollars, cryptic messages in lieu of control knob labels, purposely epoxying boards to make it harder to reverse engineer them, nerds degooping and reverse engineering said boards, AND MUCH MUCH MORE! This poo poo is to electronics engineering what alchemy is to chemistry. It reminds me of the "circuit bending" idiots who break a nintendo and call the static pattern "art". Even a weekend course in analog signals and circuits could have these dudes actually DESIGNING useful pedals. You could go into a project saying "ok I want some fuzz, and I want to filter out the high end, have some adjustable slap-back echo and a touch of reverb", and then go and design and build that thing to order, and it might actually be worth something to someone. You might learn how to configure DSPs and then really make some cool homebrew poo poo. Instead of goobering around with a transistor and asserting brand X capacitor has more "mojo" because tonedeaf retarded bluesdad ears say it does. Then I guess those peoples whole approach to guitar is to never learn any music theory, it all just happens by magic, and knowledge kills magic! That's why they only know one chord progression and 3 riffs and are bluesdads to start with. Anyways take a peep at all the white haired balding heads in the crowd. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1OyF1Gkz-A

BigBoss posted:The stupidest music poo poo is people buying records in 2016. Gotta disagree a tiny bit here. Buying records isn't so much cool because of the sound quality, because the sound quality is worse. I don't care what idiots scream ANALOG because digital is now both high enough in sampling rate and bit depth that human ears can't tell the difference. I'm sorry but if you think you can, you're wrong. Not to mention that most albums nowadays are recorded digitally so the "analogness" of the record is lost anyway. If anything, records are neat because of the experience of using them. I know that's some serious cork sniffer poo poo but the ritual of picking out the record, carefully handling it, then kinda having to listen to the whole thing is kinda cool if the album is a good one. It plays a weird kind of Ben Franklin Effect trick on your brain that makes you appreciate the music a little bit more than you would an mp3 you click on and forget about as background noise. Plus the artwork is huge and cool. GreatGreen fucked around with this message at 23:16 on Feb 24, 2016 |

Records are cool because they're big and dumb and silly old fashioned artifacts, and because of the restrictions they impose. If I put on a record, I'll listen to the entire album all the way through, every time. With digital music, shuffling is just too tempting.
