Bang! You're dead.
I have some bad news for Millennials here, and the people who hate them with such diligence.

Current generation of young Canadians wealthiest ever: federal study

quote:

"The current generation of young Canadians is, on average, wealthier than previous generations of young Canadians," says the confidential report, though with some cautionary notes.

"Young Canadians born in the first half of the 1980s had an average net worth of close to $93,000 per adult. In contrast, previous generations of young Canadians had an average net worth of about $60,000 per adult 35 per cent less once adjusted for inflation."
---
And these well-to-do, youthful Canadians are prospering far more than their counterparts in the United States, Britain and Australia, where "younger generations are no longer successively wealthier."

If you're nearly 30, broke and living with your parents you're an even bigger gently caress up than we thought. Sorry.

Don't worry too much though, I'm sure the actual report itself is full of massaged figures like averaging the super wealthy trust fund babies out with the legions of destitute and completely fails to take any other factors other than exact dollar amounts into account.

Canada is a whole country who has the population of a US state and is run by a male fashion model.

Also almost all the figures of net worth have to do with stocks these Canadians own, which are all US based. Jobs figure very little into the net worth looking at the math.

Yeah OK but when my dad bought a house in Point Grey it cost $25,000 and now that same house is worth $5,000,000. If your parents ever bought anything in Vancouver before the mid 90s they will always be richer than you.

Housing costs in our major cities is totally hosed and most young people today can probably look forward to living like serfs in the middle ages. Even if a housing correction comes along it'll likely gently caress up the rest of the economy and they still won't be able to afford poo poo.

Early 70s. Prices in Vancouver went up 30% in the last year alone and Point Grey is the most expensive area. Vancouver is in an insane real estate bubble right now, my wife works for a notary and they have to turn away people by the dozens.

It's not deflation, it's billions in Chinese money. Vancouver is China's Cayman Islands, a safe haven for fortunes out of reach from the CCP where you can buy citizenship and own as much property as you want.

EXISTENCE IS PAIN😬
Housing prices are expensive, though I'm wondering how many people are genuinely trying to get a loan or make offers on houses.

If a couple has a stable job, they can always save up for a down payment eventually. With the housing market rents are going to be high as well so it's not like renting indefinitely is going to have a long term benefit. If they have an emergency then they have that nest egg saved up.

Their most vulnerable time will be the first two years of owning a home when they are the most cash strapped.

My sister in law did this at 19 during the last housing bubble. Her and her fiance saved up money, bought a house on a short sale and rented out all the rooms while continuing to live with their parents. They got married, moved into one of the rooms and got financially stable enough to not need roommates. They sold that house and are currently living in their third house. She's the same age as me and to her credit accomplished this not by dumb luck but rather by being disciplined enough to save up as much money as possible.

I think people see housing costs and get discouraged; I know it's what held me back. If you convince yourself you're never gonna afford a house you'll create a self fulfilling prophecy. It kind of happened to us; between our jobs my wife and I could save easily so we weren't as disciplined as we could have been. We probably could've afforded a house a few years ago if we saved more aggressively.
