I really hope they tweak the layout of the tree before release, because right now it looks damned weird. And a lot of the jewel radius abilities are position-dependent.

On another note, when another class chooses a ascendancy tree, like assassin, can they ever respec to be a trickster or are they stuck? I don't imagine you'd ever want to respec that much but just curious.

It looks reasonably balanced to me - you can't choose multiple ascendancy nodes from the same ascendancy tree, you're limited to 1 each from two trees, and the scion versions are different and generally weaker than the specialised ones.

The ability to shift your starting node is insane though, can make my SWT scion without having to use the poopy starting scion nodes, can jump up and start from the witch cast speed nodes, and grab the scion version of heirophant.

I am considering Scion for Explosive Arrow, none of the other Ascendancy classes really stood out to me for that besides Deadeye, and the standard EA build doesn't go to the Ranger area so you'd have wasted points.

As Scion you can pick up Raider + Berserker which, assuming Raider isn't nerfed, gives you:

Easy Frenzy charges without the now (somewhat)expensive Blood Dance.
Permanent Phasing + Onslaught
25% Ele Status effect avoidance
1.5% leech which lets you drop the leech gem, and there's lots of super good new gems to link to EA
10% more damage
+2 passive points
+40 dex and str, of which the dex is really nice because EA has dex issues.

Deadeye is likely more damage though you'd need 10+ points spent to get back to the right area of the tree, or to use a completely different tree focusing more on projectile damage. That or a crit EA build with Assassin could work, though you're super far from Blood Magic at that point, and sustaining EA on mana is rough. Using EB might work, and would let you pick up some auras also, might be worth trying.

Not sure whether to go ES or life with my caustic arrow MFer, I'm thinking ES will be pretty popular so I should go life? Think I'd go with raider+trickster scion for life, or occultist/trickster for ES. It's actually pretty hard to choose between them which is cool
e: Does "two handed damage" work on caustic arrow's cloud?

life. cheaper to gear which is the point of a mfer

ES gear was already really popular and expensive, and so far I haven't seen anything that is going to change that. Since it appears they didn't nerf taste of hate and vinktar, you might see even more people trying to do low life flask builds which is going to drive up the ES gear price even more.

True. Not sure whether to go trickster for ghost dance, patient reaper and swift killer, or scion with trickster and raider. Nothing seems like it works really well with life CA.
e: Almost feels worth picking necromancer just for flesh/bone offering
e2: I guess with life I can just use blood rage so I don't even gain much from frenzy charge on kill.

Are you ignoring the extra curse + nearby enemies have -20% chaos resist on Occultist? Because that's by far the most straightforward Ascendancy to go with CA.

I would just go regular deadeye for Endless Munitions and then either Fast and Deadly or Powerful Precision.

Yea I like Deadeye for life CA. Even if the 30% more damage at long range doesn't do much, +1 arrow and 20% AE radius will be a decent clearspeed bonus with all the extra coverage. And then you either get some more proj damage and attack speed or close range pierce for even more coverage.

The clouds don't stack so I think the extra projectile would be pretty useless. The AOE's nice but doesn't seem worth it, and accuracy is basically useless. Occultist would be great for ES but seems kinda lovely for life, since malediction doesn't give you any damage and profane bloom is pointless because CA already has crazy pack clearspeed. Maybe Trickster with Shade Form but no ES on gear, for 20% more evasion (!) in combat and 500 flat evasion, plus patient reaper for crazy life regen and more damage. CA can't leech so crazy dodge and regen seems like a good alternative.
e: Or maybe Scion could allow for way better pathing, maybe get the marauder life and stuff then start at ranger or shadow.

You use Malediction so you can double curse with both Enfeeble and Vulnerability to give a huge survivability and damage boost. And in terms of tree, this is something I just threw together on the spot. Left side of LiftingNerdBro's popular MF Scion, right is a Witch tree I just threw together. It has slightly more overall damage, life, and mana, and gains Alchemist and +15% aoe on the tree while losing 1 Frenzy charge, evasion, mana regen, and life regen. The only real issue I feel would be the inability to sustain Blood Rage off natural regen. You could probably work something out reasonably well if you want to get Blood Rage too. Also you get way more int on the tree but less dex and strength, which is nice since a lot of your supports need a lot of int and I don't think any important ones need a lot of strength.

Realistically speaking you should never make a dedicated MF character be ES-based any more. Greed's Embrace, Goldwyrm, Perandus Blazon, and Aurseize are all things you will wear if you own and don't give any ES (Wondertrap would be your LL boots but don't really give ES either). You won't be using ES rings either. The only flex spots are shield and helmet for MF, and you obviously can't use a shield with CA. You only wanted to go ES-based back when Greed's Embrace and the IIQ shield didn't exist since those were slots you couldn't really get much IIQ/IIR in anyways, but Greed's is way too big of a bonus to give up.

When I played MF Poison Arrow Ranger (before it was renamed Caustic Arrow) I used Blink Arrow and a Quicksilver Flask. If the movement speed is annoying you can just use a rare glove with like 30% IIR on it and better resists/life than Aurseize (that's what I did). I cursed with GMP Ice Shot Curse on Hit Vuln and used Grace + Clarity for auras but if I were making the build today I'd just drop Grace for Blasphemy Enfeeble while probably keeping the Curse on Hit Vuln. Also I was using pre-nerf Blood Dance to sustain Blood Rage, since I didn't run over 4% life regen on the tree anyways. To be honest you could probably drop the Frenzy charges and get something else while using manual Frenzy to get charges on high hp monsters.

Also I totally forgot the other reason you should go life MF: when people were running ES MF builds Divination Distillate wasn't a thing yet. It is very annoying/hard to get Divination Distillate active when you kill monsters with no life.

I've been thinking about my first build this league now that I've gotten more seriously into playing this game (stuck with a build long enough to play more than two maps for the first time), and I'm wondering if a MF build of some sort would be a good idea, or if I should try something else when I don't have a stack of uniques to use or saved currency. Do most of you do one play through to maps with a build that allows you to have currency to try something better on the second run, or is there a cheap build I can use that can still be good at the end of the game?

sunder looks like fun.. also debating earthquake type builds. The problem i see with earthquake builds is I only see 1 unique and less duration reducing that earthquake time... i wonder if there's anything ot the passive tree that does Less duration of skills now..

I'm interested in the fact that the +% (element) damage with weapons passive nodes are getting penetration added. I wonder how viable a 1h/shield gladiator that goes into the shadow area for crit and arcing blows would be. Run static or lightning strike alongside tempest shield/curse on hit/conductivity/elemental weakness and then link physical to lightning and lightning penetration to the main attack. That's about 150% lightning penetration which is like a 150% more damage mod on monsters with 0 resist, and a lot higher of a mod on monsters that actually have resist.

Vulnerability will boost chaos dots, assassin's mark will boost chaos damage crits, and projectile weakness will increase the damage of chaos projectiles. None of them work specifically with chaos damage, and chaos doesn't have a curse associated directly with it.
