So it's perfectly legit to wander around with a Colt-Browning M1895 without a license? :v:

I should have noted that there's a whole bunch of exceptions to the "Any gun manufactured before 1900" rule

quote:

A firearm is exempt from regulation if it was manufactured before 1900 and meets the following criteria:
Handguns – a) its method of ignition pre-dates the development of ‘percussion’* or
b) is a single shot antique handgun
Longarms – a) it does not take cartridge ammunition or
b) if it does take cartridge ammunition, that ammunition is not commercially available.
*Percussion means a means of ignition in a firearm in which metallic chemical compounds or fulminates are used to ignite the main powder charge.
Examples of exempt firearms
Exempt firearms include pre-1900 muzzle and breach loading firearms such as flintlocks, matchlocks, wheel locks, snaphances, caplocks, inoperable military cannons or field guns, cannon net devices and remote controlled model warship cannons.
Regulation and licence requirements
As these firearms are ‘exempt’ from the Firearms Act 1996, there is no regulation or licence requirements to purchase, possess, carry

Canada has similar laws; basically if it's a dewat firearm it's in the prohibited category, airsoft got a pass with a bunch of restrictions, paintball is generally tolerated and air guns have speed & energy restrictions that pretty much renders them useless for hunting.

If you commit a crime with any of the above, you're charged with full firearm sentencing multipliers and you will be in trouble just for showing up in public with any of them without a valid reason.

Though you can also own things like anti-tank guns loaded with HE with no restriction (explosive ammo is legal as long as it's above 15mm in caliber), and you can get around magazine restrictions by buying a semi-auto version of a period machine gun like an MG 42 and feeding it with a belt. You can also buy 10-round pistol magazines and load them into rifles that take the same mags, even though rifles are supposed to have a 5-round capacity limit. Or buy magazines for .50 Beowulf AR-15s and load them with an illegal amount of 5.56mm.

So you can own a semi-auto rifle with a 100 round capacity as long as it's belt-fed, or you can own a 20mm anti-tank rifle with explosive ammo, but goddammit you better not have a 15-round magazine in your Beretta!

To be fair, you're a lot more likely to do a crime with the Beretta than either of the other options.

It's the "You have 3 children, 12 grand-children, 20 great-grand-children and 15 great-great-grand-children"-part that makes me sad. I watched one of my grandmothers die in a retirement home while I was 5-15 years old, visiting every year to see her loosing more and more of herself. It was horrible.
The thing I took away from her 4 sons - all with families, raised as fine Christians - was: Old people are a bother and they don't need a happy live with their family anyway because they will die soon. Sorry for the :words:

The irony occurs when your uncles get old and get the same treatment because they never thought their kids any different.

The reporter reading off that list of her descendants felt weird, so I looked it up. Ends up she's outlived only one of her three children, but holy poo poo her granddaughter is 67 and her husband passed away before I was even born (1971).

Fake guns are apparently too scary for just anyone to own.

When it comes to actually using guns for crime though fake guns are usually just as effective as real guns, as the majority of the time they're being used in a threatening/coercive manner for rape/robbery/whatever. I understand in America (or some states at least) if you hold up a store with a fake gun it can or will be legally treated as a real weapon and you'll be poo poo on by the justice system.

It'd be pretty unfortunate to give up after that long though, haven't you been in a situation where you want to retire something but it's lasted longer than it should and you can't bring yourself to do it?

I'm pretty sure most of the Australian government hasn't actually seen a gun in real life and only has a vague notion of what a gun is in the first place.

TBF, American cops are very familiar with seeing guns in real life and they often mistake other objects ( cell phones, penises, canes, etc.) for guns. And then of course, there's confusing their guns and tasers.

Australia also has very strict rules on replicas. Paintball guns and air rifles are Category A firearms (the same as .22 rimfire non-automatic rifles and double-barrel shotguns) and require a "genuine reason" to be provided to petition for ownership. Deactivated guns are easier to get, but airsoft guns that:

A) Resemble real submachine guns or machine pistols
B) Fire full auto
C) Have folding or detachable stocks

are illegal. The individual states have even stricter prohibitions that either totally ban airsoft guns altogether or have an effective ban (like making them legal with registration and then refusing to register any). Only the Northern State allows airsoft guns to be owned with the appropriate firearms license....but they banned paintball guns instead.

It seems like the Australian government just has a really tenuous grasp on what a "gun" is and are just making things up as they go along so nobody notices their confusion.

thanks crazy gun person for yet another crazy gun derail

There's a video of someone passing out about three times on a ride like that.

I can't even imagine how scary it would be to wake up after passing out and, in that first second of consciousness, when you still have no idea where you are or how you got there, to discover OH GOD you're a million miles in the air and falling to earth!

Funny, though.
