How can you tell what's physical damage and what's magic damage? ACT somehow knows because it shows up in the parse, but where does it get that information?
|
# ? Feb 27, 2016 23:59 |

Usually, if it's fire/ice/lightning/earth/elemental/lasers, it's considered magic of some sort. Anything that involves smashing, cutting, whipping, or whatnot, can be considered physical. Another good way to tell if it's physical or not is to use sheltron. If it gets blocked, it's physical. If it doesn't, it's magical.

It's pretty accurate to common sense IE 'this thing actually hit me it must deal physical damage!' That includes bullets. Not energy bullets, that's magic. Regular bullets are physical.

Leveling up a lancer right now, and will be transferring it soon to Excalibur. I was wondering if I should try out any caster classes as well since dragoons are so overplayed? Everything I read said caster leveling is harder, but I am just not sure. Black Mage, summoner, and white mage looked kind of dope.

Everything I read said caster leveling is harder, but I am just not sure. Black Mage, summoner, and white mage looked kind of dope. Play what you like! Don't be afraid to try out something different. I've gone back and forth between a few myself. It's much easier now to try out alts, especially with the increased armory bonus in HW and the ring earned from the Novice challenges. BLM, DRG, and SMN are all straightforward until 50. BLM has the highest complexity of those, while SMN and DRG are more clockwork/forgiving. Even if DRGs are overplayed (which I don't believe they are), it's because they're a quite good class. And it still takes some skill to play well. A good DRG is welcome in most situations - good single target damage, adequate AoE (if lacking in sustainability), excellent burst. Really the differences between the classes will matter only in niche situations, like endgame raiding. There's a whole lot to do outside of that. One thing to keep in mind - if you level ACN (which leads to SMN), you also get a healer in SCH.

Not really. Once you do the level 15 mainstory quest, you can travel to all of the major towns and unlock all of the not-3.0 classes. You can try all of them, and play what you enjoy.

Bear in mind that when most people say "alts", they mean switching jobs/classes on the same character. I have an alt character for extra banking, but most people will never need one.

If you have the class unlocked all you have to do is equip that class' weapon and bam, class change (as long as you aren't in a duty or in combat). Most people make a little hotbar and drop gearset icons onto it for quick changes.

Once you hit level 10 and get permission from your first class trainer, you can do the intro quests for other classes to unlock. Switching is as easy as changing weapons, though (as above) people usually use pre-saved gearsets.

If I'm switching from say a lancer to a thaum, won't the points I put in strength be useless?

Dr. John Zoidberg posted:You can play all jobs on one character, there's no need to make multiples. Yeah, that's my favorite feature of this game; you can do whatever the gently caress you want and you don't have to worry about starting over (except that you have to start at level 1, but I mean you don't lose all the worldly belongings you've acquired on your character). I have chronic alt-itis, and this game is just perfect for people like me. Something in the game looks cool? Try it! A single character can do literally everything the game has to offer (except for specialist crafting, which I've decided I don't care about). Casters are neat; I find summoner really unsatisfying until level 60, when it suddenly rules hard, but black mage is pretty fun at all levels; just be prepared to learn a whole new rotation every other time you learn a new ability, and then try to quickly remember it when you level sync into a new dungeon. It's not hard, hard, but it's not quite as brainless as the leveling experience on some other classes. And honestly even if you do gently caress it up, low level dungeons are so easy it doesn't matter if you aren't playing optimally. Truth posted:Thanks, isn't it a problem with stat allocation though? If I'm switching from say a lancer to a thaum, won't the points I put in strength be useless? Nope. Your bonus stats are tied to the class, not your character, so you can invest them anew for each one. The only one that sooorta struggles here is ACN because the bonus stats apply to both SCH and SMN but it A) doesn't matter that much and B) is really easy to change with a cheap item you can buy from GC vendors.

Those are only for the class you are currently on. If you level to 60 on DRG, and switch to WHM, you won't get any bonus stats from your DRG. There is literally no downsides to playing multiple classes/jobs.
|
# ? Feb 28, 2016 01:08 |
|
The effect of the bonus stats is also incredibly small in the new end game, where 210 had main stats in the 1070-1100 range. It's pushing the point where the 35 bonus attributes are becoming about as much as half of an accessory.

The only thing is that you usually *should* pick a main class when you hit 60 because of the top tomestone limit of 450 a week. Dump it all into one class and use the secondary tomestones for your alt class. For example, I main SCH, so all my new gear from tomestones and raiding goes to that, but I keep a tank at i210 for running dungeons with a quick queue, and also a melee / support / caster class should people be recruiting for it. Edit: I realized this advice is geared towards brand new people and they won't be at this stage for awhile. But in the end it's not hard to gear yourself up with relative ease.

I just finished Antitower. Regarding the cutscene after it: The dialogue right after where they talk about Minfilia being out of power to keep herself together pretty much confirms she's not going anywhere. I don't know how anyone could have expected her to be done. Minfilia the mortal hyur might be gone but we'll probably be seeing plenty of her.

I messed up part of my UI. I tried out the new "everything at 150%" setting and, as expected, it was laughably large. So I set it back to 100% and specifically the Status Effects bar is now tiny. I can't fix it in the HUD settings or anything. Anyone know how to fix that?

It's not very fun to see our main dude be a complete chump in every cutscene. It's also not fun to relive the part of FFIII that tortures me deep within. Having 24 people in a raid is pretty cool though. Those bosses must have like a million health. This was well worth the wait. Crystal Tower is cool as poo poo and I'm glad I finally popped it today and did them all. Now the only thing left is the last 2 turns of Final Coil and we're off to the HW races. Got back to leveling MCH and forgot how fun it is. The allure of having a job at 60 that can share 99% of my main job's gear is strong. Currently 42 and ran a Stone Vigil and kept pretty neck and neck with the DRG, out-DPSing him on bosses. I can only guess this is a good sign for my abilities with MCH so far.

The other thing to keep in mind is that gearing up alts is way easier because you'll have so many spare tomes lying around from doing roulettes on your main.

How much more damage does MCH give out compared to BRD endgame, actually? I don't really know the numbers. I've got both of them not too far apart (MCH at 49, BRD at 53) so I could just focus on one of them once I get MNK/AST to 60. BRD is a bit more fun for me at the moment, but I haven't gotten the (ugly) Gauss Barrel yet.
