i'm having a strange issue with a sata hdd in a new system i just assembled the drive isn't recognized in uefi when i start it up and i've tried swapping power and sata cables, sata ports and other drives are recognized when plugged in to the same sata ports with the same cables the drive is recognized and works just fine when connected using an external usb 3 enclosure i also checked to see if it was a gpt/mbr issue, but the drives that work are all mbr i'm genuinely stumped and i'd like to keep on using the drive as transferring the data would be a real headache has anybody encountered this and know what might be the cause?

Sort of comupter related, can someone explain what this issue was and how the fix worked? I have 4kTV as my main monitor, and just set it up to run 4k60Hz with a hdmi cable, as for some reason the displayport cable would only give me 4k30hz. 4k60hz works, except there's a flicker on the screen every few seconds where it blanks just for an eyeblink - more annoying than you might imagine. As a test I dropped the refresh to 4k59Hz, and that seems to have completely fixed the issue. Eh?

it may actually be 59.95hz or 59.99hz. usually it doesn't make a difference but some televisions and monitors get thrown for a loop. as for the displayport issue, that's weird. displayport 1.2 and higher support 4k60, nvidia 600 series+ and amd something or another have native 4k60 support as well. there's something about hdmi 2.0 or HST to something and gently caress if i know but it might be the cable quote:I finally solved this problem after bought my 8 display port cable because for my amd video card is high demanding in terms of cables, and of-curse my tv needed more high bandwidth cable for this amd card to work well, all my other 7 cables i bought specify for this card for testing are V1.2 . got a good one for you guys, someone at the office basically took all the font files we had on the asset server and moved them to a single folder, presumably to use some kind of font manager better or something. my understanding is that they did a search for *.ttf/*.otf and moved everything to the new folder we'd like to have the old system back, but of course we're talking about a clusterfuck of thousands of files with name varying from "perfectly describes the font" to "8 nearly random characters because we've had these files since literally the 80s" between the file names and the metadata in them we should be able to build a list that would allow us to batch file 95% our way back to a sorted collection. is there an easy way to pull the metadata from font files (most of the incorrectly named files have the correct font name as metadata), associate it associate it with the correct file and output the whole thing in like a csv file or something?

Dodoman posted:http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/26053/is-there-a-unix-command-line-tool-that-can-analyze-font-files looks promising, i'll play with it tonight if seeing the content helps, here it is: Part 1 http://pastebin.com/vk4FrMbw Part 2 http://pastebin.com/WJNfx7yw at least it's going to be an interesting exercise in file (structure) recovery, and it'll be good practice for the intern on how to use excel to hit a data set with a wrench enough times to cox out a meaningful list if i can fix the truncated file name issue the rest should be trivial, just a whole bunch of find and remove [thin/regular/bold/etc], remove hyphens, fix caps & spacing then remove duplicates. from that, batch script a shitload of mkdirs then fuzzy vlookup the actual files and batch script another gently caress load of moves excel is surprisingly useful for stuff like this, but bottom line gently caress reassembling this by hand lol e: in the temp's defense, i have to admit that the thing he wanted to use is pretty neat, nexusfont allows you to manage your poo poo and not have a bazillion fonts loaded. not my cup of tea since i'm more of a number cruncher but heh, credit where credit is due surebet fucked around with this message at 18:37 on Feb 29, 2016 |

I got a guy telling me that if you set up sites with different DCs on them that clients will ignore the site assignments and still go out over a wan link unpredictably and the whole thing reeks of bullshit since this feature has been around since: Forever and dealing with lovely slow WANs was one of the very first things AD did, so I'm wondering if there is absolutely any truth to it. I'm setting up test DC vm's to verify things will work the way I want but I think people are lying to me because I'm asking for something they don't want to do

anthonypants posted:what are you talking about, it looks like you're talking about ad sites for gpos or something but what goes out over a wan link talking about client auth against the DC, pulling down policy and whatnot. so I have a branch office on the other side of the country and I throw an RODC over there in its own site this guy I'm talking to is claiming that the windows client systems will often bypass the local and fasted DC (RODC onsite) and instead go out a slow-rear end WAN link to the other DCs which makes no sense and flies in the face of what MS documentation is saying

if you want to prove it you can log in to one of those machines, open a cmd prompt and run echo %logonserver% and it should be the rodc on their lan. you can also check HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters\DynamicSiteName on the machine and that should be their ad site name. if it's not then you either got gpo problems or dns problems. clients can absolutely gently caress up and for no reason decide that they need to talk to a different dc, but those should be considered one-offs and for the most part it will work just fine. oh, and when clients do gently caress up there's a "next closest site" gpo that should make sure it doesn't always call the main office. it's not a big deal.

That's what I figured. Thanks! Oh, and an they also threw out a thing saying that when there is more than 4 domain controllers that subsequent DCs only get a "fractional GC" which reeks of bullshit, but who knows. I think I'm being messed with, personally.
