I've had a 6s for a month and have already noticed micro-scratches on the camera lens. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to have it protrude out but if they're going to design iphones to be in a case, they might as well bundle it with one.

sapphire is Al 2 O 3, i used to make it for dram capacitor dialectric, it is easy to make (relatively).

titanium nitride on the other hand builds up on the inside of the cvd chamber and cleaning it off required we have a bunch of tubes with the stuff that, if you expose it to anything that can burn, immediately ignites, and if you pour sand on the fire, it BURNS HARDER.

it is, of course, extremely toxic, but that’s the least of the problem. It is hypergolic with every known fuel, and so rapidly hypergolic that no ignition delay has ever been measured. It is also hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water-with which it reacts explosively. It can be kept in some of the ordinary structural metals-steel, copper, aluminium, etc.-because of the formation of a thin film of insoluble metal fluoride which protects the bulk of the metal, just as the invisible coat of oxide on aluminium keeps it from burning up in the atmosphere. If, however, this coat is melted or scrubbed off, and has no chance to reform, the operator is confronted with the problem of coping with a metal-fluorine fire. For dealing with this situation, I have always recommended a good pair of running shoes.

yes, it can be scratched, especially if you transport tungsten carbide in your pocket. in practice long exposure to sand particles (particularly the quartz crystals) could scratch it. but... by the time your lens is scratched from sufficient contact with sand, the rest of your phone would have been so scratched up that the screen would be an unreadable translucent blob and the metal would be all hosed up. in normal use this is unlikely.

I guess what I'm saying is don't put your phone in a rock tumbler

Nevermind that most cameras are not particularly sensitive to scratches on their front elements. Lensrentals.com did a pretty good write up, but it looks like the pictures are broken. Suffice to say, they took a lens with a huge crack in the front element and noticed some ghosting and loss of contrast, but the lens still produced ok images.
