Vulture Culture posted:Andy Sneap really popularized this in metal in the early '00s and gently caress him in the chest for that Its a fucker cos Superior Drummer can sound pretty authentic if you don't mix it to sound like plastic and quantize the poo poo out of it. Tune the drums away from their initial values, don't compress the gently caress out of them, program in variation, both in velocity and tenpo, Sometimes sounding like Fear Factory can be appropriate but I'm getting increasingly aware of when people have been using SD and leaning on it. Granted I'm a 'bedroom producer' and thats my main source for drums so there is a bit of (non Tatgren) hypocrisy going on here but I try and make up my own kit from it. There's the Sneap samples he used for Chimaira floating around and in isolation they sound worse than the Session kit in Ableton Live, real false.

My brother and I just listened to the new Anvil album together, it's just more of the same fun Anvil songs if you already like that kinda thing. Tracks 1 and 3 are dumb but the rest are enjoyable. Lips still needs to take a "less is more" approach with lyrics though, if he simplified that poo poo and just wrote more thrashy stuff they could be so good.

I missed that they were making a new one. Every chorus still a nonstop repeat of the song's title? I really liked the tone on their last one, it was a fun listen to rock out to.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone.muike posted:first three textures albums. sikth's "the trees are dead and dried out and wait for something wild" and "death of a dead day" Oh yeah, I have Sikth's Death of a Dead Day. It's a fantastic album and definitely blew my mind the first time I heard it. I remember trying to plug it to the Megadeth forums 10 years ago and sold it as "Strapping Young Lad meets Dillinger Escape Plan". I think I'm going to break that out again today. Thanks for reminding me.

gently caress yeah Grave Digger. They've done their share of forgettable stuff, but their good stuff is really goddamn solid. Tunes of War - Kinghts of the Cross - Excalibur is a helluva trio of albums. The Grave Digger from 2001 is also pretty ace. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIkfhR8DzNk

A couple years late on this, but after David Gold from Woods of Ypres died a few years ago, the remaining members (including Rae Amitay from Immortal Bird) put together the nonsense-named band Thrawsunblat and released a pretty awesome album that's probably better than anything Woods ever put out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxLfHyJXspU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KVXIjLUUYM Recommended for people who liked the slower songs on the first Wintersun album.

Went ahead and bought Wanderer on the Continent of Saplings on CD and kicked in an extra buck because I saw Rae in Eight Bells little over a week ago. Came out to $16.66 with shipping, so I made the right call.
