Andy Sneap really popularized this in metal in the early '00s and gently caress him in the chest for that

Its a fucker cos Superior Drummer can sound pretty authentic if you don't mix it to sound like plastic and quantize the poo poo out of it. Tune the drums away from their initial values, don't compress the gently caress out of them, program in variation, both in velocity and tenpo, Sometimes sounding like Fear Factory can be appropriate but I'm getting increasingly aware of when people have been using SD and leaning on it. Granted I'm a 'bedroom producer' and thats my main source for drums so there is a bit of (non Tatgren) hypocrisy going on here but I try and make up my own kit from it.

There's the Sneap samples he used for Chimaira floating around and in isolation they sound worse than the Session kit in Ableton Live, real false.

A friendly face.

My brother and I just listened to the new Anvil album together, it's just more of the same fun Anvil songs if you already like that kinda thing. Tracks 1 and 3 are dumb but the rest are enjoyable. Lips still needs to take a "less is more" approach with lyrics though, if he simplified that poo poo and just wrote more thrashy stuff they could be so good.

I missed that they were making a new one. Every chorus still a nonstop repeat of the song's title?

I really liked the tone on their last one, it was a fun listen to rock out to.

A friend's band spent three days and 600 euros in studio recording drums. After that their producer spent a week or so quantizing and replacing all the tracks with samples

Like why the gently caress even bother at that point. The guy's a really solid drummer too

Is this what the band wanted to happen in the end? If not I'd go burn down that fuckers studio.

Oh yeah, I have Sikth's Death of a Dead Day. It's a fantastic album and definitely blew my mind the first time I heard it. I remember trying to plug it to the Megadeth forums 10 years ago and sold it as "Strapping Young Lad meets Dillinger Escape Plan".

I think I'm going to break that out again today. Thanks for reminding me.

They've done their share of forgettable stuff, but their good stuff is really goddamn solid. Tunes of War - Kinghts of the Cross - Excalibur is a helluva trio of albums.

The Grave Digger from 2001 is also pretty ace.

Dream Theater are turning their concept album into a Video Game\Board Game.

http://www.turbotapegames.com/portfolio-item/The-Astonishing/

quote:

Dream Theater: The Astonishing Game

The first ever Dream Theater game is coming your way.

Prepare to step into the dystopian future as described in the concept album The Astonishing. Travel to The Great Northern Empire Of The Americas (G.N.E.A.) where any dedication, investment or interest in the arts has all but been abandoned. The very soul of what was once real music is lost in a digital quagmire of emotionless sonic madness.

In this setting a young man from the Endless Isleland, Gabriel, emerges with a voice so profound it moves everyone that listens, transporting them back to a time where true art created by humans was celebrated and consumed as the ultimate nourishment for the soul.

In the game you will follow the story-line of the album through a series of matches between the rebel militia and the forces of G.N.E.A. in a board-based tactical strategy game! The game is available soon on iOS & Android (both mobile and tablets), as well as for PC and MAC.

Features:

quote:

Dynamic digital board-game
Advanced animations
Superb sound design
A dramatic storyline
Single-player
Pass-and-play multiplayer (same device)
Online multiplayer

I was never enjoying it. I only eat it for the nutrients.
A couple years late on this, but after David Gold from Woods of Ypres died a few years ago, the remaining members (including Rae Amitay from Immortal Bird) put together the nonsense-named band Thrawsunblat and released a pretty awesome album that's probably better than anything Woods ever put out:

Oh cool, I really enjoy Woods of Ypres when I'm in certain moods but hadn't heard of this. Went ahead and bought Wanderer on the Continent of Saplings on CD and kicked in an extra buck because I saw Rae in Eight Bells little over a week ago. Came out to $16.66 with shipping, so I made the right call.
