I think I tried that one at some point, probably due to the second gif you posted there!
Only watched the first episode - really did have nice action, but felt painfully cliched, like the most utterly generic people-with-powers thing. Not really bothered by the fanservice, just... didn't really catch my interest. Maybe I should give it another chance.

Have you seen Shin Mazinger Z? it's by the same director as Giant robo, and while it isn't as good it is still quite excellent

Try Gunsmith Cats if you haven't seen it, it's only three episodes. And Macross Plus.

the story and characters in yzq are pretty standard, but if you don't like that personally i still feel like it has some really great action. give it a few more episodes, cause the next few iirc have some awesome bits and the two ovas have some of the best action scenes ever

It has the same precise and intimate style as a Shaft anime, just minus the intentional artificiality. You can tell that the director got his start at Shaft.

The effect is different, but I think if you appreciated those qualities in bakemonogatari you'll like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu.

If you want something a bit more SHAFTy, less grounded, then look at Sankarea, also directed by Omata. It's a shounen romcom that does some things right.

it starts out a bit slow but like right after the fourth episode, every episode of the show past that has some of the most loving awesome amazing action ever

Expect ridiculous high camp, not logical character behaviour or plot progression. This is a show with lines like 'I neutralised the explosion with a martial-arts technique' and 'now adjusting K2 to status of world's third-highest mountain' where characters surf on swords, suplex space shuttles, and punch the everloving poo poo out of the moon. It isn't hiding a clever little coming-of-age story behind its ridiculous bombast like Kyosougiga or FLCL, it's pure anime B-movie, and while it is pretty lovable, that's what you'd have to be prepared to love it for. Nick Creamer's ANN reviews are a decent primer.

macross and macross plus have idol singers as key parts of the plot, in macross' case because its plot focuses around culture and how it affects the invading giant alien race and gives them something to hold in common with humanity that ultimately brings the two groups together. the pilots themselves don't sing

you shouldn't feel shameful about watching fun things. do keep in mind though, the first four episodes are completely different in tone from the rest and much lighter on action of that same ridiculously fast style. the end of episode 4 is where it starts to get amazing

Sure - gonna keep that in mind. That kind of attitude kept me from watching K-On and Madoka for the longest time, and oooooooh boy those were GREAT. I feel like I've been missing out on a whole lot of honestly great stuff by just suspecting shows of general creepiness, when the genuinely good stuff really isn't. Or maybe I'm a creep now too. I dunno, I've got an anime avatar. :v:

Of course, once in a while, you get a Nisemonogatari and feel a deep sense of crushing disappointment in yourself and humanity and why am I suddenly in jail

Checked this out, and oh man that is totally Giant Robo right there. Somewhat generic, somewhat annoying boy protagonist? Check. Badass people having badass lines? Check. People repeatedly yelling "Father" or variations thereof? Check. Nonsensical awesome supernatural powers and complete chaos? Check.
Went :stare: throughout the entire first episode. It does not gently caress around. Even if I end up not liking it all that much, I think I'll definitely check out the finale, because that much insanity crammed into one episode is a sight to behold.

as the name implied, the first episode is actually the last episode, chornologically. Check out the second one as well, it's where the story actually starts.

Nisemonogatari is way underrated IMO. The toothbrush scene is comedy gold, probably the most hilarious thing the show has ever done, and there's lots of great memorable dialogue like Kaiki's philosophy of a fake becoming more valuable than the real thing by its deliberate attempt to be real, or the "courage to tell a lie" exchange, etc.

I could've done without the fanservice, but most Monogatari is that way. I think the amount of distinction drawn between Nise and the other more well-regarded Monogatari seasons is kind of overstated.

all the stuff with kaiki owned and he's one of my favorite characters in the series, but i don't think it's an overstatement to say that nise spent way more time on the fanservicy aspects than any other season

also don't worry torquemadras, if you're uncomfortable with it, outside of the designs for the symphogear armor i don't think there's actually a lot of fanservice in symphogear. there are some odd bits in the earlier half of season 1 that might weird you out a bit, but they're really short and it never really approaches anything like that again

I've heard about that, yeah. That's disappointing. I watched it on Crunchyroll where (I think?) they used the original broadcast versions. My first time watching it I was less bothered by the nudity and more just stunned by the realization that they were really going to spend basically the entire episode on one scene. Though Bakemonogatari really should've already prepared me for the whole franchise being mostly that.

Speaking of the bath scene, though, this was a great moment. Tsukihi walking in on the toothbrush scene was hilarious too. Show is nuts and I love it.

When I watched Bakemonogatari, I didn't really get why it had the reputation that it has - that was pretty tame, really! Lame snake girl was pretty borderline, but eh. Also cat girl was hot. There, I said it. :colbert:
Nise ramped that poo poo up. Holy crap. Yeah, let's have a lengthy bathing scene with the 8-year old who's actually a thousand year old vampire, seriously! And let's talk some more about how much these siblings are horny at each other! What. The series is quite rambling as usual, but that struck me as weird filler from the porn dimension. I skipped through large parts of it, until Kaiki showed up again... The story itself wasn't bad by any shot, it just focused on the two by far worst characters (sister #1 never does anything in her own story and never finds out, sister #2 so fuckin dumb that you can talk her into having a fever). Made up for it by probably the best character, who is a perfect fit for the endless talking the series is known for.

If that didn't tip you off: I really don't mind fanservice. It's pretty stupid most of the time, but nothing cringe-inducing by itself. It starts getting bad when there's nothing else, or when the whole story gets dragged into its service like some sort of super-gravitational porn field powered by a singularity of a turbo nerd, masturbating multidimensionally, forever. If you wanna put fanservice in your anime, it better be skillfully served!

And now excuse me, I need to see how a buff man can teach a teenage idol how to sing better via Bruce Lee movies

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is another series that I believe was made by a Shaft alum and shares the sensibility.

Has a bit of fanservice, but more of the Senjogahara/Hanekawa variety than the Mayoi/Karen/Shinobu one.
