Well you're wrong because the hero killing the bad guy and marrying the heroine is the halfway point.

Also what boilerplate fantasy do you look at that Goku, a cavewoman, and a robot fighting a space parasite is generic to you?

There is no Goku and also mashing together a bunch of standard genre tropes doesn't make something interesting or unique it just means I can now choose from five different clichés instead of one.

Your standards are way too drat high if the interaction of multiple eras with the backdrop of the end of the world doesn't qualify as creative, simply because the individual pieces are approachable.

There's a difference between cliche and approachable, yes. If this were Lagoon we'd be talking cliche, but Chrono Trigger has its twist in the time travel, so the eras must be easily grasped so that the complication comes from the time travel. 65,000,000 BC being caveman era is simple. The psychic dinosaurs and being the era which Lavos falls is the complication. Medieval era is simple. The girl you met a moment ago dying due to time paradox is the complication.

Of course this is overvaluing creativity in setting itself as opposed to how with which it is interacted. FF5 has a pretty standard setting but the party's abject failure followed by going to a different world is its trick. There's also mediocre sidescroller Psycho Dream wherein the entire thing is someone's nightmares... which happen to take the form of the big city except with bugs.

That makes sense. A lot of sense. Man, it's really lovely that I managed to only draw one of the characters with legs, and it was the one that explicitly doesn't have them. Brb.

Earthbound is kinda rough gameplay wise since it is very much a Dragon Quest clone in that regard, but the rest should be enough to carry it.

It's much more playable than Mother and significantly more charming, mind.

Earthbound is however hampered by the SNES' awful instruments and has this really washed out pastel look that I find very unappealing. The really abstract Earthbound music is really good but all the stuff that tries to be "normal" sounds poopy.

I hate criticizing Earthbound's soundtrack because it's all very well composed but the SNES has a really terrible instrument suite that makes it hard to appreciate anything.

I never played mother much but it's a very early JRPG so it has a lot of not knowing what the gently caress to do and it's possible to wander into high level areas while just looking around and get completely demolished.

Earthbound is one of the best games ever made.

RPGs in general are huge time sinks, even the shorter ones (Unless they're like, Space Funeral or something), so it can be daunting to dive into one without knowing if it's any fun, but I find that I've rarely regretted the hour or so it takes to figure out if I like an RPG, J or C.

Here's a short list of turn-based RPGs I would call "great", in no particular order:

Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals
Earthbound
Mother 3
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy5
Final Fantasy 6
Final Fantasy 7
Fallout
Fallout 2
Live a Live
Shadowrun: Dragonfall
Shadowrun: Hong Kong
Super Mario RPG
Paper Mario
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Undertale
Chrono Trigger
Breath of Fire 2
Pokemon: Yellow
Pokemon: Silver
Xenogears

And that leaves out a bunch of games I never played, that I feel belong in separate categories, or are just "pretty good". I've had a good time playing rpgs of all kinds and it's a genre I'm really passionate about. I hope everyone can enjoy at least one kind of rpg in their life.

Well yeah of course. I think my opinion is the correct opinion to have because it's my opinion. This has nothing to do with whether or not I dislike a person for having an opinion and at the end of the day if people don't agree with me I'm not going to lose my mind.

theres no argument to be made for it being a good game. it isn't a good game. but i like it. i enjoy it. it's super flawed but it feels like the devs put a lot of heart and soul into it, so even it being a bad game, I still find it enjoyable to play and i like it

Oni is pretty cool even if it has a lot of super dated sensabilities. I wish there was a really good GITS game but it's hard to capture the feel and high concept philosophisin' in an interactive medium so the solution is usually just to turn it into a shooter. A Bioware-type RPG based on Ghost would be really cool.
