sudonim posted:I'm a left-leaning liberal in godless gay-marrying Massachusetts and I can't help but laugh at this drama queen. I had accrued 75k in student loan debt for a failed attempt to be a commercial pilot. I was trying to pay as I went, working full time, but it was quite slow. I got my first 5k loan to finish my private pilot license and bought a car for 4k that later needed 2k of work planning to work as much OT as possible through the Summer to pay them down. A month after getting my license in April I got laid off from my job. I got a bit of assistance for going into a technical program (aircraft maintenance 2 yr AAS degree), but it only covered 1/3 of it all and basically was just for tuition. I had school for 7 hours and worked for 6 barely able to cover my bills. I ended up putting over 5k on my credit cards to pay tuition and keep current on bills because I was desperate and dumb. After finishing maintenance school and working 2 jobs to try to catch up and afford the tests for my license I heard about a flight school in Southern Utah. It was still my dream to fly so I researched a bit, called around, and basically was told exactly what I wanted to hear. I discussed it with my parents who said "follow your dreams!" and had stars in my eyes failing to look more carefully at it all. My parents co-signed a loan for 55k and another for 20k even though their financial situation was quite poor and not a good source for advice. It was to cover all my flight training costs and schooling for a Professional Pilot Bachelors degree. Long story short it was all a shady scam. I was half through the program but no where near a point to turn it in to a career (and a very poor starting one at that) without further expense when they closed and went bankrupt. Years of court cases, lawyers and detectives didn't get me anything back and I got too depressed to even care. I did get the last 10k of the 2nd loan sent direct to me just as it went under. I used half of it trying to finish my commercial license at a different school and the other half keeping afloat until I got a job but completely quit it all when I was just bleeding money. Since I was no longer enrolled, bills came due for the loans and I'd gotten about 12k total in cc debt by then (most of it used for school/training supplies and keeping current on bills...). So, that's how some of us get in over our heads with really stupid debt. I lucked out, though, and got a good job shortly later doing contract maintenance for airlines which caught me up financially. I then got a good career at Boeing with lots of overtime, paid my credit card off in a year, the 20k loan off over the next year or so and am down to 43k on the final one. It was both those things you mentioned in my case added with missing key things since I was hearing what I wanted to hear. There's some schadenfreude to pass on!

Yeah, it's hard to find schadenfreude when your own government puts you in indentured servitude because you want to make a decent living. If you want a good idea on why a lot of younger people are pushing for Sanders or Trump (not saying both are equal), it's because they either want the loans forgiven or bankruptcy laws expanded to include student loans. Obama already figured out that was on the horizon and that's why he started pushing for various loan forgiveness programs back in 2008 and 2010. Unfortunately, those only go for Federally-backed loans, and not private ones. Fortunately for me, after eight more years at my nonprofit job, my loans no longer are a consideration, but this predatory lending and bootstraps mentality that still filters through American life is one of the reasons you're seeing various people wanting to blow everything up. Anyway, back to the funny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_efRUrmjSc I like how this dumpy kid is just standing there and is propelled back by the initial blast. The more I watch this, the funnier it becomes.
