On the one hand, yes the DS sold massively better, to the point of being the second-highest selling console ever by most estimates. On the other, using yet another non-specialist tech site's 'Nintendo is dooommmmeeeddd!!!' article is not exactly convincing anyone that Nintendo's in any kind of dire situation because of it. Every year we get scads of those, and every year they prove to be full of poo poo as Nintendo again fails to be doomed. Also, maybe it's just me but I think there's something hosed-up about gaming culture and our expectations if a console that has sold to this point nearly as much as the NES and significantly more than the SNES, and nearly 6x more than the Xbone and 2x the PS4, and has made profit for Nintendo on every unit sold, is being described as a failure.

MisterAlex posted:Raw console sales numbers aren't the whole story. I can sell 100 widgets at $10 a pop and think I did great, but meanwhile you sell 30 widgets at $50 a pop. Or you can be Nintendo and sell 58 million widgets and make a profit on every single one while all your competitors make a loss on every unit. So again I don't see your point. quote:Then there's the question of whether and how much continued and residual revenue each of our widgets pulls in after the initial sale (arguably more important than the initial one-time sales). It's health may be declining but it's still sold more than the majority of games consoles ever produced and has an excellent library featuring a number of multi-million-sellers, both first and third party. The 3DS really isn't the disaster you think it is. And frankly it's doing pretty loving well considering the casual market that propped up the DS has almost entirely shifted over to lovely, low-budget iOS games instead. And obviously the 3DS is doing an order of magnitude better than the Vita. Sakurazuka posted:Report my rear end same

I never said the 3DS is a disaster. I just think that it's misleading to hold it up as a case for "If Sony had kept on chugging with the Vita, it would've done great!" There are far too many variables for that to be a valid comparison.

There are far too many variables for that to be a valid comparison. You're misunderstanding what people are saying as well. It's not about "chugging on", it's about *actually giving a poo poo and doing more than actively sabotaging the thing*. Sony has been the greatest enemy the Vita has had.

Yeah. Say we are at the point where they already screwed up the vita and they try to save it with the release of the slim. They could have actually advertised it, they could have really played up the ps4 functionality, they could have released a new killer game, or most importantly got rid of propriety memory or at least made the cards affordable. They didn't do any of that. I'm not saying I know if they could have made it a big success but they didn't even try.

Am I wrong or Nintendo stopped trying to make really big releases after the 3ds second year? The first two years were full of new, worthwile releases, then Nintendo just dropped the ball to move its teams on WiiU and NX. That really didn't help sell the console to people who did not get in the first or the second wave. Anyway It's still good sales considering the market shrunk a lot. thorsilver posted:On the one hand, yes the DS sold massively better, to the point of being the second-highest selling console ever by most estimates. Well, consider that technology outlets who have no interest in talking about gaming companies sometimes will eschew reality, badmouthing console makers to talk well of mobile phones, incidentally talking well about Apple or Samsung devices.

I think part of the reason the 3DS has bottomed out quicker than previous Nintendo handhelds is actually graphics fidelity. I knew more than a few people who saw the "New 3DS" and were disappointed that it had the exact same anemic screen resolution. Even if you feel that graphics aren't very important (and I'd agree), the 3DS screens look archaic when compared to even a free crappy Android you'd get when signing up for a mobile plan and that's sort of disappointing. It becomes even more of a problem when it makes small text actually hard to read in some RPG's.

My guess would be mobile gaming more than anything in regards to 3ds not being as enormously successful as the DS was.
|
# ? Mar 3, 2016 21:34 |

Yeah, in the case of both the Vita and the 3DS "Mobile game is now a thing" is something that has to be taken into account. Dedicated handheld gaming devices are either going to become a narrower niche or be on their way out entirely depending on how things go. Anyone with an interest in gaming probably has a device in their pocket that they have on them 24/7 and can play many games while having more relative utility so a dedicated device is going to be harder and harder to justify.

Sakurazuka posted:Apart from the bit where all phone games are trash Eh. There are enough playable phone games that unless you're looking for really dedicated experiences you're probably going to find something to waste enough time these days. Basically the crowd that wanted a handheld device for timewasting has one and so it's only looking for a dedicated on-the-go gaming device that it has a niche and even that is narrowing with ports n' poo poo. I can play Baldur's Gate or KotOR or Sentinels of the Multiverse or whatever on either my phone or tablet which is not exactly Top-Notch Gaming but isn't exactly crap either.
