Pomp posted:I airways thought natto looked delicious The smell and taste, on the other hand, can be quite pungent and off putting. I would say its foulness is comparable to stinky tofu though not as objectable since the sulfur content of stinky tofu makes me think of human feces. Anyways, I had a hard time finishing some natto I had in Hawaii but it included some fish sauce that made it more palatable for me. It's definitely not for the faint of heart. Alright, I'll make sure to throw at least the bingo and weird boiled potato thing in the new OP. I really don't want to get rid of trashcan nachos though. It's just so amazing. But yeah, if you've got something good, throw it up () and I'll get to making the thread tomorrow-ish.

Friend of mine found natto at his local Asian market and when he took it to the register the guy said "ah yes, natto, very healthy" in a tone that suggested it was the only positive thing he could think of, which, according to my friend, is accurate.

That's what Japanese people tell you. I suppose it is. I actually don't mind natto; it's okay in maki or with eggs on rice, but you have to be prepared for both the strings and the smell. It doesn't have a strong flavor at all. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat it, or even buy it, but it was one of the things in Japan I used to eat just to impress my Japanese friends. Lots of people eat it just because it's good for you, but they don't necessarily like it. Incidentally, tolerance/fondness for natto is regional. It's much more popular in Tokyo and thereabouts than in the Kansai region.

How stringy it looks is exactly what interests me. I love that sort of texture, and it can't smell much worse than all the things my dad used to pickle back home, either.
