There's no poll option to make the sleeve use A and B as its two sides, and ditch that other design entirely? Of the two choices here, I think A is classier but I see the appeal of B.

I don't know how they could design both of those alternate covers while still designing the actual cover. The first one should be the game's cover while the second one should be the reverse one.

Honestly, I wish it were worthwhile buying Doom PC in a box. Stupid "this is just a glorified Steam key" trend gaming has these days... If I wanted the game on Steam, I could just do it through Steam - and for much cheaper, most likely! It'd be nice if the game would still run without it, even if you'd have to go through the hassle of patching manually like the old days.

CD-Keys were replaced by Steam-keys. Too easy to crack cd-keys, or share them for single player games. Sucks though, no doubt. I hate drm. I don't buy console games digitally unless there's literally no alternative (or if it's free on PS+ I guess). With PC games, there literally is no alternative, because everything worth a drat is locked to Steam even if you buy it from a brick and mortar store.

I like to buy some pc games the old way because they look nice on my shelf, like collectors editions of some games etc... other than that, buying digital copies are the best bet otherwise. On consoles there's a good 2nd hand market if you buy something and you end not liking it or will play once then never touch it again. Since I bought my 360 in 2008 I've done some good tradings with both stores and people and you can get insanelly good deals from people that barely touched their games/consoles.

Well for one thing the internet at my house is kinda iffy, so I'd rather go with physical over having to do a gigantic download, also a PS4's hard drive fills up surprisingly fast, so I'd prefer to keep it physical for this sort of thing
|
# ? Mar 3, 2016 22:13 |

That latter point is kind of moot, since physical games install to the PS4's hard drive too, nowadays. Though it's easy enough to delete and reinstall as needed when you have the discs on-hand, at least?

Both covers kick rear end in their own different ways. I had trouble deciding but I went with B because I like B-side cover art to be, well, covered in art.

Hold on to your armchair, but some people like owning physical of copies of games if they can at all choose to do so.

I don't have any particular attachment to physical media, but I'm young and have decent enough internet so the only thing that I actually buy discs for at this point is the Wii U. The only real benefit you're even getting these days is a generic looking box and maybe the ability to only download half of the game instead of all of it.

There was zero conflict or antagonism between either of them.

I kinda like physical copies, I was a little disappointed that Wolfenstein: The Old Blood didn't have a physical PC release in the US because it would have looked nice with all my other Wolfenstein games. Also because it took loving forever to download and I don't have an awful internet connection. Downloading only half of a game is pretty nice when the game is 50 gigs. In general I can't help but feel games are getting really large, too large even, for honestly little benefit.

Oh well, a bit late now anyway. Anyway, I saw an interesting looking Hexen mod on the ZDoom forums called a Morte and tried it out. Don't make my mistake. The maps are blocky, overly large but not in an interesting way, more like "hey, here's a room that's three times bigger than it needs to be," the first area, the Mausoleum, has these doors that open annoyingly slowly, and the new enemies are annoyingly tough. Oh, and there's this warning: a Morte dev posted:One set of sprites in particular has a very adult death animation, I'm aware of this and its a left over from the original sprite sheet. I will consider removing this or blurring it out in the final version. While this specific death sequence could be considered "realistic" in Berlin during the Russian invasion, I'm undecided as to whether its comical or in poor taste. I'm sure there are people out there who will find it offensive and I would prefer not to offend people over any "historical accuracy" or "humor". Curious and pissed at how awful it was to play, I god moded and no clipped my way around until I found them. The sprites in question are naked women who apparently wander the streets of war-torn Berlin and obviously came from some porn game or something, especially obviously when their death animation has their legs spread. It's not comical, especially not when put into context of the last days of WW2. All-in-all, a Morte is has bad levels, bad enemies and is kinda gross for some weird reason and I don't recommend it.

It really needs to be the other way around.

Option A would be good for a Special Edition of the game. But B is what it should have been all along. Punching a hole through an Imp using its carcass as a shield while blowing a pinky demon's cranium 3/4 of the way off. I have irrational hope that one of those stylish finishers will have you grab an enemy and you just punch it in the stomach with the Super Shotgun. When is the beta supposed to happen again? I need my fix.

Option B on those alternate Doom covers just kind of strikes me as trying way too hard to directly imitate the original Doom artwork, as opposed to doing something new with the same attitude and style. Like a cover song, as opposed to a new track by (a different line-up of ) the same band. Think Doom 2's title screen/cover artwork. Different perspective, subject matter, artist... but it still unmistakably has the same tone and feel linking it to the same universe as the original.

The thing about it though, it's not just a direct imitation. Yeah it's very clearly supposed to be the same general composition, but the difference between the original and that one is that in the original, it looks like a last stand, he's defensively fighting off a horde, but in the new one it gives me the impression that he's there to gently caress some demons up because he's picking up the one by the neck. It's more offensive. It matches the feel of how the game looks so far, which is that it's like the Doom of old we promise please believe us, but far more overtly violent, where Doomguy is some kind of berserk ultra violent psychopath.
