can someone explain why a bunch of posters said that everyone reaffirming the pledge "blew a hole" in the GOP or whatever they were saying handing over the keys to trump in an orderly manner like that seems like way better of a result for the GOP than the #nevertrump people going off and doing their own thing

Dr.Zeppelin posted:can someone explain why a bunch of posters said that everyone reaffirming the pledge "blew a hole" in the GOP or whatever they were saying The GOP is currently fractured - a lot of Neocons will never support Trump for obvious reasons, so they started the #nevertrump movement and Rubio is their candidate. For over a week Rubio has been going out saying he will never hand the GOP to a conman(Trump) and will fight him tooth and nail. Tonight Rubio said he would support Trump if he was the nominee. Dr.Zeppelin posted:can someone explain why a bunch of posters said that everyone reaffirming the pledge "blew a hole" in the GOP or whatever they were saying Of course it is, but some people thought that the GOP candidates would be stupid enough to go through with it. The fact is that you don't spend over half a year continuously on the campaign trail fighting Trump in every state for the sole pleasure of breaking with your own party and voting for Bloomberg or whomever. These candidates want to get something out of it, and they'll only get something if they back somebody with a chance of winning.

Dr.Zeppelin posted:can someone explain why a bunch of posters said that everyone reaffirming the pledge "blew a hole" in the GOP or whatever they were saying It undermines their campaigns. You simply can't be out there saying "he can't be president, he's a con man and liar and stands for nothing" and then say "I'll support him for president if I lose." It exposes you as being full of poo poo and having no integrity. We all suspect that's the case but you can't just out and spell it out like that. Sure, the more prudent party move is that you'll eventually coalesce around the nominee. But if that's the case you have to hold back on what you're attacking him with so you're not such a hypocrite full of poo poo when you do it. And if you do go all scorched earth then you can't just say "eh, I'll endorse him anyway" without it triggering a lot of people's bs detectors. I mean, it's all a lot of hand wringing because we know it's probably futile fighting Trump at this stage. But if you're going to do it, then do it right.

I think Romney might actually have sunk the NeverTrump effort by showing such gleeful support for it. It was clear that he was positioning himself as a candidate in a brokered convention, and nobody but Mitt Romney wants that to happen.

Logically, Mitt would be the best candidate in a brokered convention, since he's already won a lot of primaries - far more than Rubes or Cruz ever will - and he's running against a very different opponent this time. But again, I think only Mitt wants this to happen. It looks like the party is willing to unify behind Trump.

I honestly have no idea how this primary will play out day by day, let alone by July. A brokered convention just seems slightly more likely than Trump getting the nomination with a clear and decisive margin. Right now those are the only two viable options going forward since nobody else but Trump has a path to a clear victory. I am really just here to watch it unfold since I gave up long ago thinking I had any knowledge of how this would play out.
