My wife and I really enjoy All Creatures, I bought one of the expansions to break out once it started getting stale, but after ten or so games we haven't used it. Re spoilers: While there are definitely things that knowing beforehand that will hurt the experience, or leave it open to abuse, that isn't one of them. In fact it's pretty clearly telegraphed by the tropes in what little writing there is.

He had the base set and then the one with the dragon and his tower, and then the one with the four extra city spaces all around the board in the corners. He lovingly painted all the figures and I loved whenever I'd get an invite to play. Dice chucking, character upgrades, monsters, treasure... It was a big deal. And because he died of cancer a few years ago and his wife extricated herself in a bad way from the family, I'll never see that version of Talisman ever again, so the game has a very special place in my gaming heart.

Nice, I want to play your uncles Talismans set, sounds like a man who knew his poo poo. From your description it sound like the 2nd or 3rd edition of Talisman. The first edition didn't do the whole "expansion boards go on the corners" thing, it just had separate boards you could teleport to (I prefer this system, as it makes table set up a lot easier!): vs

Fond memories of encountering his character as we marched around and the look on his face as I said I wanted to fight him and proceeded to whoop his rear end.

What does that game do that Dominion, Arctic Scavengers, and both Valley of Kings don't do?
|
# ? Mar 4, 2016 18:42 |

djfooboo posted:What does that game do that Dominion, Arctic Scavengers, and both Valley of Kings don't do? It uses role selection as its primary deckbuilding mechanism, a la RFTG/Puerto Rico. When you're the active player, you choose one out of six possible roles of to lead, gain one card of that role, put it in play, then optionally follow it with any cards in hand that have the same symbol to boost its power, while also getting a bonus since you're the active player. Other players can follow the role at the same time if they also have cards in hand with matching symbols, minus the bonus, or they can dissent if they can't/don't want to follow, drawing a card. The forced card gain leads to some interesting decisions in tracking your deck composition to make sure it doesn't get flooded with certain role cards that aren't going to be particularly useful as you progress through the game. The role selection in general though gives it a pretty distinct feel from Dominion and Dominion-likes while retaining the fundamentally good aspects of deckbuilding in general. Vanilla EmDo has a bit of a problem with very little game to game variance, which Escalation fixes by adding asymmetrical starting positions.

Dude. It's one of the earliest spoilers in the game, and not even one of the interesting ones. It's not the "Snape kills Dumbledore" of the game, trust me. At best, it's a belated "Yer a wizard, 'Arry!" I'm sorry I told you that Harry is a wizard. I promise there are still plenty of nifty things to unpack in the game.

Some people (or maybe even no people, idk) are objecting to something being revealed about the plot of a game, ok whatever, I don't actually care about that. Other people, and this is what you're not getting, are not objecting to that but rather to the extremely stupid misuse of spoiler tags. Spoiler tags don't do anything except inconvenience everyone who bothers to read the post if you just do like: In Harry Potter Snape kills Dumbledore! You use spoiler tags in some kind of context of what the spoiler pertains to: In Harry Potter book 3, Harry Potter catches a dreadful cold and sneezes on Hermione. How embarrassing.

The spoiler tag was entirely useless. And the second format would have been equally useless in context, because mentioning that The Game In Question fits The Category We Are Discussing *is* the spoiler. So gently caress me.
