Those are mortgages, asset backed loans - that's how real estate development happens. Virtually nobody - GE building a manufacturing plant, federal governments developing public utilities, Trump building a casino, even private individuals who buy houses - doesn't use mortgages, because the rates are so low when there's a hard asset backing it. He may be a terrible businessman, but it's not bc he uses mortgages You can just go on Google and type in "the trump organization holdings" and see that it is incredibly demonstrably false to say Trump really isn't even that rich.

I've actually been trying to move away from digesting information exclusively from sources that are accommodating to my pre-existing convictions (e.g. Maddow) but it's a strange and scary journey . There is some worth to trying to check out views, opinions, and facts from sources of other political persuasion than yourself, but its best to do so while knowing what you're getting into. There's a reason why the most trustworthy sources of current info tend to be viewed as suspcicious in conservative circles, mostly because expertise and sourcable knowledge puts them in a disadvantage. There's some good stuff and people out there (I used to like reason.com before it lost its poo poo, The American Conservative is alright as long as you know where they are coming from, and The Economist is good outside of the editorials and supply side theorizing, etc) but its always best to dive into diverse areas of information, which tends to be dominated by those of the liberal persuasion.

He may be a terrible businessman, but it's not bc he uses mortgages Yes but from what I have seen repeatedly from Trump is he considers assets and liabilities to be completely different things, Trump has always been very highly leveraged and net worth means net, assets minus liabilities. I don't get to claim my net worth to include the full value of my home without deducting my mortgage while Trump seems to think he gets to count all the properties that he has hundreds of millions of dollars of loans on as part of his.

I tend to view it the same way as the climate change "debate". I'm a scientist, that's what I do, and by no account do I think both sides on any issue of fact are equally correct. But way too often, I'd run into the same bizarre arguments and not understand where they kept coming from. Checking out the deniers and general loons gave me a better sense of what was going on (in terms of discourse, not the climatology obviously) and why it was being addressed the way it was, but at the end of the day climate change is still as real as it ever was, and similarly no one is going to convince me that human rights and public education are social evils.
