I just need 2 more fishing ranks and then I'm getting that pirate perk because the fish treasures lock me in a horrible skinner box from which I will never escape.

Well my farm has been tilling along steadily. Income now is constant because of all the things! So I had a meteor fall from the sky and land on the edge of what was a melon field - is now a corn field. So it seems there is a reason to upgrade my pickaxe some more! I've finally managed to get several batteries after storms through summer. The lightning rod bug is still a thing though - I've given up replacing that particular one. (I've basically got four rods but the top-left one keeps vanishing) Got access to the sewers now too. So hops. I hadn't grown hops previously but after they mature, the fact that they produce a harvestable EVERY day is super useful and will carry my big bunch of fermenting kegs through the rest of the year. And they fetch a good price until next summer when I plant all my starfruit. Don't sell hops by themselves though - they aren't worth much as a raw material. Although I wonder - fruit based beverages take longer to ferment than hops do - you literally get ale every two days with hops. I haven't worked out which is more profitable. Also amusingly I only recently discovered that planting flowers around beehives improves the kind of honey you get. Despite having 11 of them for ages. It certainly makes sense though. I also picked up the seashell amulet I need to marry my person of choice although I haven't given it to them as yet. This game is just super relaxing to play. It also has a generally happy vibe that I find genuinely refreshing (even if Clint is a mountain of misery at times). But then for me DS3 is next month so I suppose it is something positive before I'm absorbed by the grim, dying embers of that. =P

I'm still in year one and haven't put in a ton of time mining. Iron isn't exactly scarce but I have tools to upgrade and things to build. I like crab pots in concept and I'm fine runnin' down to the beach on days where I forage but no, I'm in no way spending 3 iron bars on those things right now and probably ever

Yeah, it's so much setup and work for such a piddling income. Maybe if you could get both the requires no bait and never fishes up trash perks it would be worth it, but they're mutually exclusive. Really, everything else pales in comparison to the income you can get from crops.

So I've literally never played a Harvest Moon/Rune Factory game before, but Stardew hooked me for 50 hours so far ( and thinking back on it, Recettear hooked me for 70ish ), so I'm tempted to go back and try them out. What would be the games in both series that are must haves/best to get into? Which are considered the "collectors" style games, that are well regarded but maybe haven't aged well? Which are the -bad- games in those series?

So wait, if I plant corn in summer will it survive the transition to fall or will I need to plant new corn?

Corn planted in summer will survive through the transition into fall. Will ancient fruit survive the transition from fall > winter in a greenhouse? About to unlock it. Also will it survive winter > spring of a new year in a greenhouse?

Rune Factories 3 and 4 are both super solid but in different ways and I feel that's probably the consensus. Harvest Moon is harder to answer...I feel like of all the HM games the one that's probably closest in feel to Stardew Valley is probably going to be Magical Melody. The only ones I would say to avoid are the early DS ones; Harvest Moon DS was notoriously buggy and Sunshine Islands was just an ungodly chore to play.

I'm just starting out, is it bad to walk over your crops as you water them? What's the best layout for planting stuff, 2x10 long rows so you don't have to walk over them, or 3x3 squares, or it doesn't matter?
|
# ? Mar 10, 2016 04:54 |
Walking on them doesn't matter at all, crop layout doesn't matter until you get sprinklers or upgraded watering cans. Squares of 3x3 is a convenient multiple though, you can stand in the middle and harvest/plant/water without moving

Rune Factory 3 & 4 are the best IMO. For main Harvest Moon games everyone has their favorites but in general HM64 and stuff based on it (Back to Nature, Friends of Mineral Town) are nearly universally liked. Newer games like Story of Seasons & A New Beginning are good but can be harder to get into because of much slower starts. Games to avoid would probably also include Innocent Life, Tree of Tranquility... but YMMV. HMDS is also fine as a game if you manage to get one of the later bugfixed copies Yakiniku Teishoku fucked around with this message at 05:41 on Mar 10, 2016 |

Hmm, twice as much treasure, or 50% better fish. Well, treasure is nice, but I've only gotten good stuff out of it once or twice, most of the time its just bait. I did like it when I got a fancy sword and boots, after I already had a better sword and boots.

mcvey posted:Am I the only one that uses fences gently caress no, fences make everything pretty! This is my farm setup, just going into Year 1 Winter. Being my first shot at this game, I made a few errors - I should have put the coop where the barn is, then the barn to the left a bit, and use the coop area for more artisan stuff; there's always time to move it later. I could have put the silos somewhere out of the way, too, but I like neat roads on my farm and not much else fit in that spot anyway. The rightmost fields are all set up for trellis crops if I need to grow them, but in practice I might only use the top one or two rows for trellis stuff, so I can replace the ones touching the pond with more sprinklers. Either way, there's space for ~320 crops, which is tons. I'd be cool when it's modded out, it doesn't add a whole lot to the game, and wasting hardwood or iron on fencing just isn't worth it. Even using stone is a pain when you want to save for a building.
