I think it is a decent lampoon of the college football fanaticism in the :secsmug:. One if the main characters is absolutely terrible, but overall it has some pretty funny guys in it. Thad Castle dominates the show and is my favorite meathead character in television.

I haven't seen a ton of it, but it struck me as closer to Eastbound and Down than Entourage.

It is exactly what you think it is, but it's also pretty funny. The main character guy is a soap opera actor, so it's hilarious to see him on general hospital or whatever chewing up scenery. Also, keep in mind that the goat mascot guy was a producer on the show and basically forced himself into episodes as THE WACKY HEDONIST SEX HAVER CHARACTER.

Seconding that it's more like EBD, but for cable tv.

The goat mascot guy not only produced the show, but he also co-created it and co-wrote almost every episode, and the movie too.

I really do not like Blue Mountain State but in one episode they get in like, I dunno a rivalry with the lacrosse team and they have an escalating prank war that results in the lacrosse team building a mirror maze around a sleeping guy which I thought was pretty funny if just for the line, "Those assholes built a mirror maze".

If you're a fan of David Foster Wallace and haven't seen The End of The Tour, it's on Amazon Prime now.

I would recommend not watching it.

I thought it was an interesting story of a writer who is "successful" and a writer who's a "genius" forced into a week-long rivalry/friendship. The genius writer just happens to be loosely(?) based on DFW.

Low-key movie that also had a good soundtrack.

Edit: Now that I think about it, it would be an interesting double-feature with Frank.

I found Jason Segel's portrayal of DFW to be comparable to "a guy dressing up as him for Halloween," so yeah, your assessment works pretty well.

As someone who really liked Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, I did not like the Netflix sequel. Something about it just stuck in my craw, like it's a movie pretending to be set int the same universe. The tone felt all sorts of off. The original in my mind's eye is more of an art house emotional piece that happens to have some well choreographed fighting, whereas this sequel is pretty much non-stop sword murder (except the bafflingly non-lethal superfriends that get murdered in the second act) with only passing pretense at a pathos to hold the events together.

I fell like the movie works better on it's own divorced from the events of CTHD. Go into it pretending like it's not a sequel and you could get some enjoyment out of it.

Hey I just noticed Blade Runner is back on Netflix. It's a slightly different version than before. It seems to be in better quality than the previous version.

I can't tell you what's different about it other than that since this is the movie I play to help me go to sleep.

Blade Runner is one film where I would say gently caress streaming services. Just buy the drat blu ray that includes both cuts and watch it over and over again. Blade Runner was like the second blu ray I bought after Lawrence of Arabia.

All the cosmetic retouching done in The Final Cut is done really well and might be the best version, though I'm sure a case can be made for the CG-free director's cut. The theatrical cut is abysmal in a Brazil Love Conquers All Version kinda way.

Also: just buy Blade Runner.

The Final Cut. It's okay if you're one of those people who have a soft spot for the director's cut, but the Final Cut is better.

30th Anniversary blu-ray is like $15 on Amazon and has all of the different versions plus a boatload of additional content.

The version that seems to always air on TV is the theatrical cut, too. Is there perhaps a monetary reason (licensing fees or royalties or something) that results in Director's Cut type versions usually not being available?

IMHO the Final cut is the best. The changes are subtle and respect the original. Pretty much the opposite of Greedo shooting first and the walkie talkies in ET.

There's one set that has all 5 versions of the movie and 30+ hours of features. I forget what it is called but it came out on DVD in 2007 or so.
