I'm glad you're enjoying it. I like the idea of murdering space pirates for cash as a holdover from my Privateer 1 days. It's also fun and seriously easy money with nearly zero risk :eng101:

I've been doing it in my anaconda recently and while it's basically "lol" as my murderbrick space oil tanker destroys everything with next to zero effort from me, I think you can do it a lot more time efficiently in a FDL, Imperial Clipper, Python, etc.

Moral of the story: when exploring, third party logging tools are your friend. The navcomp apparently gets unreliable if you go too far out onto the fringe. It senses opportunity and does not shy from betrayal

I had that happen when I went through a long (loooong) patch of brown dwarfs and TTs and ended up in the rear end end of nowhere. When I finally found a scoopable star, the nav computer basically laughed in my face at the suggestion of going either forwards or backwards, but doing it manually worked just fine. My best guess is that one of the jumps I was trying (and/or one of the ones I had done before) was just on the edge of what was possible given my tonnage at the time, and this one time, the weight of the fuel I added during the last stop made a difference.

Collector Limpets are also good for exploration, since they collect everything in range, including salvage. Salvage CGs are basically easy mode with those things. Just enter a salvage site, deploy collector limpets and lean back.

Hell, the first time I found weird data caches 9k+ light years from Sol, I accidentally destroyed a cache by ramming it with my Asp. Your drones will never do that. (They will slow you down with their weight, though. Taking some with you just in case is a difficult decision.)

This was my initial thought too, but I always top off. So going in I had a full tank, and coming out I had a tank depleted by the boosted jump. I also dropped two tons of cargo while I was in there, because I decided data caches don't sell for enough to haul another 60 kly. So by all rights it should have been plotting substantially better on the way out than on the way in. It was a genuine bit of weirdness.

Data caches are basically worthless on any long trip- the added weight is a disadvantage, and even the big ones only sell for 100k. IIRC they count as illegal salvage too.

They do, which is stupid. You should be able to scan them with your ship and just receive that 100k as bonus data in your navcomp. Making them illegal salvage is absurd and making them take up a ton of cargo room is worse.

I have way, way more scan data than that and it's still taking up 0 tons. What kind of storage media are these other assholes using?

Elite will have an update and you will be able to use your Oculus Rift with their SDK version 1.0, doesn't matter where you bought or launched Elite from. You'll also be able to buy Elite on the Oculus store or redeem the game for free if you already own it.

I talked with Braben about it and I've got a piece up on Ars—the quick version is that ED will be in the Rift store starting March 28 w/Rift 1.0 SDK support. They'll also be patching the existing Steam and Fdev Launcher versions with Rift 1.0 SDK support at the same time (Horizons and non-Horizons both). You can run whichever version you own with whichever headset you own, so you can use a CV1 Rift with the FDev launcher, or a Vive with the launcher, or a Rift with steam, or even a Vive with the rift store version if you just feel like being contrary.

Apologies for the self link. Please don't hurt me.

Why in the article do you say "as well as full SteamVR support for the HTC Vive (though there might be an odd edge case with using SteamVR and the Vive with the Oculus store version of the game)."

and then in your post above you said: "or even a Vive with the rift store version if you just feel like being contrary."

Just trying to understand because whether Oculus will allow games with SteamVR support on their store has been a hot topic.

I was going by what Braben told me, but that might actually be a potential (weird) edge case. I'm going to ask Oculus and Fdev PR to clarify. It's possible that the Oculus store version would require you to jump through really absurd hoops to use a Vive with it, if you could do it at all. He didn't say that they were building separate SKUs for Rift or Vive elite, though.

Here's what's solid:
FDev launcher of Elite and/or Horizons: will get native Rift CV1 support via free update on/before 28 March, works with SteamVR today (for the Vive or the Rift w/0.8 runtime) if you have SteamVR installed. Either headset will work.
Steam version of Elite and/or Horizons: will get native Rift CV1 support via free update on/before 28 March, works with SteamVR today (for the Vive or the Rift w/0.8 runtime) if you have SteamVR installed. Either headset will work.
Oculus store version of Elite (which'll include Horizons): will launch with native Rift CV1 support on March 28; if it's the same binary and libs as on the two other platforms, should work fine with the Vive if you can figure out a way to put both headsets on your head at the same time or something?

Also, per fdev, you'll be able to convert your existing game to the Rift store if for some reason that's how you want to roll.

If the question is just "does Oculus allow games in the store that have steamvr support that you can use if you get them from another platform," the answer must be yes, because Elite. But if the question is "does oculus allow games in the store to have steamvr support that you can turn on in the menus," then the answer from where I'm sitting based on Elite is "I think so, probably?"

Like I said, I'll ask. In this particular case it seems like a moot issue, but I totally see the larger implications of the question.

Fdev says no change. To the 970/980 thing, they're saying "The game works well on the Oculus recommended spec but we want to make sure that players get the best possible experience from Elite Dangerous and that's why we recommend a higher spec."

I haven't played on a CV1, but I've been playing on a Vive Pre for the past week, w/an i7 and a 980ti, and I'm not sure I'd want anything less. Supersampling of 1.5x or 2x is 100% right out—the framerate penalty is absurd. it's 1x or nothing. If you're on a 970, I'd expect you to probably have to make some compromises in the graphical settings to keep framerate up.

Might be different for the Rift—can't say, don't got one yet.

Thats what I assumed for those scenarios, however I don't quite understand how you would "Convert" to a Oculus store (as if you were killing off being able to use the ED launcher or your already owned Steam version) since the game tracks your purchases in Elite through your Login... Wonder why they are making it so confusing. My guess is you will just get the key to not have to buy the game again in the Oculus store, if you have an Oculus and want to launch it from within there. That key should also (if you don't already have Elite and just bought the game through Oculus's store itself) allow you to use the ED launcher outside of Oculus if you would want but they may/may not provide a Steam key to load it up there as well.

Either way, Have VR, multiple ways to get and play Elite so no matter where you buy it, it should work on anything just fine.

As for the GPU requirements, I can definitely see that Horizons may require a 980+ as Landing on Moons is a much more GPU stressing event then even just flying near high detailed stations pre Horizons. I am looking to get back to civilized space to load up my Type-6 with the SCV I need then landing on the nearest planet to give it another go since I got the 980Ti. On my SLI 780's I was no longer able to play at 1.5X (On a DK2) when I got close to and landed on a moon, however normal space and station still were ok. I assume the CV1 will kill that 1.5x ability like you mention.

Last I checked, EDDiscovery just reads your netlog files and doesn't keep its own logs, so the important part is to turn on verbose logging. Once you do, programs like EDDiscovery or sites like Inara can read all those old log files to see where you've been going back basically forever. Without that, they won't know anything.

I'm about 60% of the way through a Sag A* trip and have found single-digit Earth-likes on my trip. I've found dozens and dozens of water worlds: the galaxy seems to be lousy with them. But ELs and black holes seem to be exceedingly rare. It was probably 2000ly outside the bubble or so before things seemed more "random." Lots of gas giants and ice balls before that.

I found this one near Sag A*, amazingly unscanned:

Same experience as you with metal rich and HMC planets. I find systems with ten or more all the time. Gas giants also seem very likely to have some kind of life floating around in them.

My (very limited) experience suggests to me that it's a bit of both. During my first somewhat proper exploration trip, I found half a dozen of them within maybe a 300 Ly stretch, and then nothing for over 2000 Ly.

However, this was a trip almost straight down from the bubble, aimed at nothing of any significance, and it followed a modest triangle of ~1,500 Ly per side. It wouldn't surprise me if the procedure assigns shifting weight to different “rare” celestials depending on where you are in relation to the centre of the galaxy, and this far out along one arm, the LEs aren't being outweighed by all the other oddities that become more common closer to the centre.

Sounds plausible, especially if you remember Earth itself is far away from the centre of the galaxy. I've stumbled upon tons and tons of terraformable planets (and half a dozen Earth-like worlds) on my trip to the Outer Arm, for example.

All you explorers: are you checking the habitable ranges for the solar masses of whatever star you're at and moving on if no earthlikes/terraformable/waterworlds are there, or are most of you spot checking random planets, or is it actually way more common than I think for people to actually go and [horrified noises] scan everything in a system?

edit: Because I'm a huge nerd, I went and figured a sliding scale for how far out to scan planets while I was exploring and it made things way quicker. For the majority of stars, there's often simply no possibility for habitable planets based on the distance from the parent star. Things are obviously more complicated in binary/trinary/higher simplex hierarchies, and I have to spitball it there. IIRC from memory 1 solar mass in a simple system gives a range of about 250 ls - 1500 ls and its pretty simple math from there to adjust it.
