Well it seems like not sinking anything at Pearl is common. In my current Grand Campaign, none of my battleships are in danger of sinking. My most damaged ship has damage values of 60/30/21/0

That Totoro has an AR-15!
For what it's worth, historically the only BB sunk at Pearl was Arizona. And that was from a lucky hit on the magazine (likely because a bulkhead wasn't closed). All the other BBs (not counting Utah, which was a training ship) were made seaworthy. West Virginia and California were "sunk" but were salvaged and put back into service by 1944.

Oklahoma was being towed to California for scrap and only sank then. Nevada, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Maryland were all back in service by 1942. Heck, Nevada almost made it out of the harbor.

West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, California, and Pennsylvania were all at Leyte Gulf and took part in the sinking of Fuso and Yamashiro.

With the benefit of hindsight, it was probably for the better that the two battleship squadrons didn't get to sortie to relieve the Philippines or something else equally dumb. They did their part in soaking up the airstrikes at Pearl and letting the IJN have their "decisive blow."

Clunk! Mwah ha ha!

I reactivate the bombers over Singapore, having replaced their losses – they come in at the right height for once and hit something! They are all set for 10,000 feet, but like to fly a little high it seems.

With this many damaged planes, I'm not going to be able to do this for long!

While it lasts however, we can do some damage – and more importantly, disruption.

I won't report in this detail again, but its been quiet, and this is some action.

We also assault – I know this was to be bloody, but we take a layer of forts, and that is the aim.

We do take more of Sumatra.

We hammer down one of the few remaining resistance points.

Our fighter losses have spiked as expected, but we made some progress.

Our own subs are still active though.

This hurts, but we need to do SOMETHING at Singapore.

It does hurt though.

Dammit, that's one of my big ones!

We are pushing south once more, and come into range of more bombers.

This one gets me an Orphan Anne broadcast.

Things kick off here.

Changsha stutters back into life – hopefully this will be the last offensive here.

We hit several places hard.

In others, the terrain costs us.

Another bloody day in China, but the invasion force for Java is kicking off.

I'm hitting Batavia with all my force, then I'll sweep down from there.

Probably an attack by only a fraction of the units in all likelyhood. The AV value is for all the troops in the hex and the adjusted AV is the real value.

Yup, only a partial attack for whatever reason. Maybe the forts, hex modifier, and experience/leadership of Grey's troops will make the difference, but I'd guess he's going to lose Hankow. A 13:1 raw AV disadvantage is a lot.

So my China deathstack has its first roadblock in the form of level 6 forts at Hankow. I have a 5:1: AV advantage but everytime I make an attack to try and take forts, my AV drops by 1/8. How can I get past this besides moving more units to the area?

Bombardment to whittle down their forces while the rest of your troops rest.

1571 guns, although worryingly there seems to be no effect on the enemy AV during those bombardment attacks.

EDIT: So my new strategy is now to keep attacking and have them attack me in return which crushes their AV as the terrain isn't good for any attacks. My raw AV advantage is now 10:1 even though I lost 2000 AV.

Another day of heavy fighting at Changsha.

An advance force arrives at Moulmien, and while they can't take the city on their own, the British forces can't shift them either.

Hankow seems to be secure.

I'm going to attack Singapore again tomorrow, the losses will be high, but I can't just sit here. I'm also calling off the air strikes, the price is to high.

If its in China be sure to switch to the advanced view in the unit details screen and look at individual unit's supply levels. If the big AV formations are red don't attack that turn and wait a few days for supply to get high enough. Units take a huge AV penalty if they are even 1 supply short. The infrastructure in China is bad enough you may have to wait half a week in between attacks but with supply your units will be doing way more damage and taking lower casualties overall.

They nerfed the bombardment action from previous WITP versions. Its basically useless if you aren't attacking at the same time. Just a waste of supplies.

I decided to support the attack with one more day of bombings.

We take a layer of forts down, its a start. We just need to do this a few more times, as the British will be rebuilding them like mad.

The Kido Butai does some warm up exercises.

Another of their last few bases falls.

We hit Changsha again.

In a day of maximum effort (and casualties) we hit another force that has been hanging around for ages.

We hit hard and lots of casualties are seen on both sides, but we take another base, and I think the losses are worthwhile. I still think Singapore is overly defended for a base that was historically only protected from the sea....

The Allied base points also drop. This is good and proper.

Ok, as I looked it up, the Beech 18-S is a light passenger aircraft whose primary military use is training USAAF navigators and bombardiers.

That's probably the civilian transport version though, unless they're lumping them all in under the default civilian name.

This is a lex imperfecta
In our timeline, the Halo was sunk by a German U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico on May 20, 1942.

After the sinking, the survivors had a pretty harrowing time of it trying to survive:

quote:

23 men of the crew of eight officers and 34 men managed to leave the ship, but only one raft was left, the four lifeboats and three other rafts were destroyed by the explosions and fire. The survivors huddled together clinging to wreckage in the water near the sunken ship throughout the night and the next day. The oil on the surface burned for six hours. Two men cling to a half-burned raft and stayed on it for seven days without food or water. They were then picked up by Otina and taken to New Orleans.

The other survivors in the water began dying from exposure and injuries. On the third day wreckage ascended from the tanker and the seven remaining survivors tied boards together with strips of canvas torn from their life preservers. Crude oil also floated free forming a layer four inches thick. Five days after the sinking, the Oaxaca picked up the three remaining survivors, but one of these men died at sea. The two men arrived at a hospital in Tampico on 28 May, but one men died 30 minutes after arriving. Thus, only one officer and two crewmen survived the sinking.

U-506, the boat that sank the Halo, would later be depth-charged by a B-24 Liberator in July 1943.

They will get used to maintain the tons of bases you'll be acquiring as you capture all of the Pacific, 1-2 base forces per tiny island base, more for larger bases. Use airbase forces if you want to include more planes at a base, use naval base forces to get more supplies unloaded from ships per turn at the base.

You will also get about a million base construction forces and beyond using a few here and there I haven't found a good use for them. Building up bases is just too easy to need the historically accurate numbers you get.
