quote:Wes @grizkid is seen here crawling into a unusually deep and narrow 70 foot den in order to sedate and re-collar a 320lb male black bear around Bryce Canyon National Park. It was one of the most claustrophobic and scary situations of my life. Wes disappeared into the den of this hibernating bear armed with only a short aluminum pole attached to a tranquilizer dart. The tunnel was only as big as the bear with no escape except a very quick 50 foot backwards crawl should he decide to charge.

Exactly what it is, StuFX wrote Thing is it's about 300ft to the water level but they're not sure how deep the water goes yet. The closest and deepest mine to me is Dolcoath, which has a primary depth of 3,300 ft (1km) and over 60km of tunnels leading off from it so...could be very deep haha https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/4ai267/a_300ft_mineshaft_opened_up_in_a_garden_down_the/

tater_salad posted:This is a good display as to why you wear a harness even if "I walk around all day on these things and never have a problem" This is classic built up stress in a material. It looks stable but it has to release the twist when the load comes off. Last summer, my dad decided to limb a tree and I told him that there is likely a twist in the 200 year old large branch and to do it carefully. He decided to stick a ladder up and start cutting and ignore me. Unfortunately, this was over the phone. It threw him a good 10 feet. Thankfully he threw the chainsaw away from himself as he fell. His arm was all chewed up from the branch snapping back at him. Remember, both trees and steel are alive and they'll kick your rear end when the tension comes off.
