Yeah, if black people were offended by the lack of representation they'd just isolate themselves from the 99% of entertainment that's not black centric, so clearly there's not a problem.

Then argument "since a large majority of people who consume this media are minorities, no change or criticism is necessary because they wouldn't consume the media if its current state was an issue" is fallacious because the opposite argument is constantly being made simultaneously when this is not the case. Let's say less minorities consumed white-centric television or didn't watch certain shows. Like Big Bang Theory, or whatever. Then the argument would be "they don't even watch those shows so why complain about their lack of representation?" With careful application of these two arguments ("Star Wars has always been for straight white males so why spoil that", and "women already love star wars so why are you criticising the fact there's only two female characters" or what have you), any criticism of the racial or sexual groups represented in any media can be easily shouted down. Both of these arguments employ a ridiculous amount of spin and contribute nothing of value. It's on par with 'ads clearly don't influence people, and this is clear because ad executives are still spending millions finding new ways to influence people when they start to become inoculated to them'. "Vaccines clearly don't work, because we're still making new vaccines for when viruses evolve."

The Vosgian Beast posted:1: The whole "Thesis, antithesis, synthesis" line, despite being in every Philosophy 101 course on Hegel ever, it not remotely accurate. It is terminology used by some of his predecessors, and he did like to put things into triads, but these triads mostly don't map onto any neat "thesis, antithesis, synthesis" structure. The only time he ever used it himself was in deriding Immanuel Kant for assuming that everything neatly falls along such lines. (makes notes for future episodes and/or commentaries) (decides not to quibble over the accuracy of thesis-antithesis-synthesis because it's also important to understand popular understanding of the philosopher especially when talking about how another historical person, in this case Eisenstein, read and interpreted him) (accepts the validity of the criticism and moves on, having become just a bit smarter)

OldMemes posted:His tweet calls it 'cynical', which wasn't in it before, so I guess he edited it? Bennet's pretty progressive when he's being serious on camera, so unless he tweets a lot of bigoted stuff, I'll assume it was just badly worded. There's no way to word it well, the core idea is uncomfortable and honestly, complete bullshit. There's shitloads of every kind of movie that's made with extreme overtones of "pandering" to the commonly held ideas of people who identify as straight men, the only time that it's criticized is if it relies on lazy tropes, is badly paced, or is just poorly executed in general, but the idea that it is made explicitly for and because of a specific ideal of "Straight Male" being the status quo is rarely-if-ever in question. Yet the core principle of "this is a genre fiction made with a focus on the protagonist's homosexuality in mind" is just baffling, vicariously insulting, even, to people who couldn't bare to actually empathize with people that like their own gender for two seconds, instead opting for a hand-wringing brogressive stance to avoid any actual self-reflection or conflict. The only media about us should be independent, realistic, grounded, about hate crimes and prejudice and just how darn lovely it is to be queer. We can't be pandered to by more mainstream media in their presence, they can't bare to see something that celebrates our sexuality with broad strokes in the same way they get to celebrate their own in every vaguely pulpy thing made in the past century, that's not realistic, that's not their perception of what we're experiencing, what we should want and feel and enjoy. Hey, gay marriage is legal in the US now, so we should just shut up about our problems and just be normal and "mind our own business" and stop intruding on their culture. Yeah, said it before and I'll say it again: gently caress. That. Noise. If the Xena reboot relies on lazy and harmful tropes and/or gets all BITWC male-gaze-y under the guise of lesbian empowerment, then criticize away, but getting pissy solely because "oh no a thing is explicitly made for a broad demographic that I'm not a part of" tends to make someone come off as an apathetic shitheel in a sea full of 'em. I really don't want to judge Bennett on one twitter comment and some videos I barely remember, but it's real difficult to take anything a dude like that says in good faith after that kind of comment. Urgh. Sorry to keep harping on this, I've just seen so much of this poo poo that it's hard not to lay it on thick like this.

Since Xena still keeps getting brought up, I'll say this. I really liked the show when it was on so did a few friends, I'm Bi though and I definitely had a crush on Lucy Lawless for awhile, but I still like the show after growing out of it. It was a fun and silly show for the most part, but could pull of some decent action scenes, and the effects were great (for a 90's fantasy show) I thought it was much better than Hercules, though I think the problem was Kevin Sorbo being dull as dish water. He also killed my interest in that SF show with the talking ship. Though anyone whose complaining about the new show being too gay or whatever can't possibly have seen the original show. They just can't have, it was incredibly obvious Xena and Gabrielle had a thing for each other. They tried to cover it up with a bunch of "guest star falls in love with Gabrielle" and Xena having significant feelings for a some guy from her past episodes, but nearly every episode was about their relationship. They even had Xena doing the stereotypical male prince stuff. Anyone moaning about gay xena is either a homophobe or one of those guys who has to be angry and pessimistic about everything for no reason at all, and neither could have been fans to begin with. I still really don't get where people are seeing 'hissy fit' and stuff over Bennett's comments. He clarified well enough and pretty much just said it's kind of weird to say they're bringing the show back solely on "Xena's gay as hell y'all" when it could just as well be because Xena was good stuff anyway.

Sorry mate but Xena is the one franchise where that argument simply doesn't really fly, because the gay stuff in Xena was what made it good. The lesbian "subtext" is what got the show notoriety and the relationship between Xena and Gabbie was what gave the show its staying power. Without that it would just be a campy technically competent light comedy action show. Like Hercules, and while I did watch Hercules its not really a surprise that no ones clamouring for a remake of Kevin Sorbo's Hercules. If your complaining about Gay themes being central to Xena then you didn't like the original show, you probably didn't even watch the original show. This is literally the one show where you can't pretend to be concerned about "gay pandering" because that was the core of the original show and even the nineties campfest managed to grow beyond the confines to have decent for television relationship drama in between fights with mythical monster and Ted Raimi's slapstick. I don't know the Sage blokes motives, -but if I had to guess it'd be the classic "i'm a critic therefore I must have an opinion on everything"- but come on, new Xena is going to be too gay? Really, unless they have hardcore sex scenes there is no way they could top the original. Anyway said all I'm saying on the matter so let's move onto content, Femfreq is moving on from video games with a new series that looks a bit like Crash Course history https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6CtHk4dzfY

If nothing else, please let this have some knee-slappingly hysterical affidavit attached to it like the one Chuck C. I have to wonder at times, just how did Jordan and Davis's partnership last as long as it did, given their wildly antipodal views on sex and pornography. Davis is dogmatically anti-pornography, while Jordan has basically cocooned himself in a protective bubble of strippers, porn stars, and sexually objectified female video game characters. The only overlap between them is that they both seem to view women as valueless objects.
