Persona 3 is a fantastic example of marrying story with gameplay because it makes your character as sick and tired as you are after exploring blocks of Tartarus.

Mass Effect, at least the first one, had poor gameplay because it wanted to emphasize all of its characters and tell their stories, which results in just mountains of text and text and dialog choices and you ended up with either a shooter that got interrupted by talking and charisma checks; or a talky charisma checker interrupted by shooting.

Persona 3 and 4 were super cool because the discrete split between social and dungeon gameplay in practice meant that whenever the social stuff started to feel monotonous or exploring/grinding the dungeon got old or frustrating, you could hop back into the other gameplay mode, but they still handled all the narrative stuff and the rewards for S Links well enough that it was never like just swapping discs for another game.

I also went into P3 expecting to suffer through the social poo poo to play the RPG part, since I loved Persona 2 and Nocturne, but I ended up really enjoying the entire thing! I wonder if there's any people who came at it from the opposite perspective, wanting to play it because it was stylish and for the story and visual novel elements, and ended up realizing they enjoyed/could beat a meaty JRPG.

Persona 5 is definitely the game I'm most excited about this year.

A loving "choose your own adventure" book can have good gameplay, so obviously it's possible to make good character and story driven games without sacrificing gameplay. It's actually when games segregate their story and characters from the gameplay that one of them really starts to suffer. Note that this does not mean Call of Duty style cinematic set-pieces are good just because they integrate story and gameplay.

I like this way to view things and feel the same way about a lot of games. Having different types of gameplay or gameplay and storytelling that complement each other can be nice when you're playing a game on the longer side and want to take a rest from one or the other.

yeah, which is actually pretty well integrated into the gameplay. Since the game doesn't tell you anything except through messages and tooltips, it incentivizes looking at these things. It also gives them to you to look at while you're waiting for the game to load because you died.

Not all solutions to integrating story and gameplay need to be the same.

edit: It also gives people who only care about the gameplay a completely non-intrusive way of opting out of giving a poo poo about the story. In most games, you would have to skip through a bunch of dialogue or cutscenes if you didn't care about the story, and you might feel bad for doing so. In Dark Souls, you can skip as much dialogue as you want, and you can just ignore tooltips and play your slashy-mans. Or, you can go all detective on reading the item descriptions and listening to the dialogue to unravel the story. But there is no dis-junction.

Yeah, but I think it's different from just throwing in driving and platforming and shooting and flying and whatever else into your game haphazardly. It worked really well because despite the game having two distinct parts, they worked together organically and thematically; both games are about forging genuine bonds with other people and helping them out, and in turn by becoming whatever they need - whether that's a buddy, a date, a rival, or a therapist - discovering your own strength, dimensions, and potential. Which you then use to beat up everybody's demons in combat.

Certainly you don't want to do them haphazardly, which is kind of how I feel about mile-wide inch-deep openworld games like your average Ubisoft game. Xcom2 comes to mind as a game with two fairly different gameplay modes that complement each in theme. In both, survival and constantly having to make hard decisions about how to use resources is a guiding principle. They did a decent job linking the two this time around as well by giving you certain targets of opportunity in both that can help you or hurt you in the other mode. The base control is the weaker of the two as its own substantive game but it does a good job giving you a reprieve from the combat and thinking on a wider scale.

Dark Souls can do what it does because it doesn't even try to have a narrative, or to do much character development. It's a good way of presenting backstory and lore though.

Nintendo seems to own everything about the game so there's nothing stopping them. Of course a mildly successful survival horror made by canadians is probably not high on their HD re-release priority list.

There were parts of metroid prime series that were oppressive and/or scary. It's too bad the original concept for metroid prime 2 didn't go anywhere, it sounded like it was going to be more like a survival horror-esque game (not necessarily survival horror since you'd be playing as samus, but definitely more emphasis on atmosphere and tension)

The Retro that made Prime is not the Retro that currently exists, most of thsoe guys have left by now.

That said, Retro as a studio has an excellent pedigree and could probably make a very solid horror title, yes. Nintendo could use a new original M-rated IP to spice up its roster. Bayonetta they kinda just co-opted.

Metroid Prime 2 had a lot of tense moments in the dark world, all taken away by the light suit. Of course, I never completed that game, because the fetch quest for the light suit was absolute bullshit that I wasn't willing to do in Jet Force Gemini, and def not willing to do ever.

I'd like a game that's like Metroid Prime in the idea that you can look around and add things to your morphology database, supposedly that's No Man's Sky. With Fighting being optional.

If No Man's Sky is Metroid Prime 2 but with near infinite planets, procedural animal/plant life, and optional combat with space flying segments, that might totally be my game.

Or if it's like Spore, I might cry.

Silicon Knights loving cratered with its following two projects (Too Human and X-Men Destiny), lost a lawsuit against Epic for ripping off their engine, failed twice to fund Kickstarters for a spiritual successor, and had one of their creative leads get arrested on child porn charges before finally rolling over and declaring bankruptcy. The odds of anything Eternal Darkness related ever happening again are frankly non-existent.

I thought it was only a couple head dudes that left retro? Even then, I can't imagine those few people were the only contributing factors to the prime series.

Luigi's Mansion is a good horror game. Sure it's not actually scary, but I think it's definitely tense enough for kids (or at the time it was, I think most kids nowadays are more into FNAF or Slender style jumpscare things)
