you don't get a popper without having terms like "synthetic" and "analytical", and a lot of scientists have been better scientists because they've had popper's formulation of the falsifiability principle to relate their work to

I mean I wish people listened to us, but really the most impact we have is hoping our students take some of our ethical ideas and critical thinking outside the classroom We are culturally irrelevant today

Ghost of Reagan Past posted:I mean I wish people listened to us, but really the most impact we have is hoping our students take some of our ethical ideas and critical thinking outside the classroom foucault is by no means culturally irrelevant to modern european and probably american attitudes to e.g. sexuality. foucault did not exist in a vacuum i'm not saying that you, individually, have some great influence, but you're working on your part of philosophy as a whole, which absolutely does have a pretty deep significance in society. it does take time for the ideas to be propagated into society in general, of course, but it seems rather self-indulgent to simply say "philosophy is unimportant" based on your personal sense of powerlessness the humanities are not irrelevant to society. philosophy is by no means irrelevant to the way the humanities are practised. there are many other ways in which philosophy more or less forms our intuitions and preconceptions, but that's a really obvious one

I got an A in a social theory seminar in college and I don't remember anything about Foucault except the panopticon.

rkajdi posted:Honestly, the solution is compulsory K-12 education with real national standards and the inability of parents to opt their kids out. Make it a point of destroying the pre-modern thinking of the kid's parents as part of educational indoctrination. Culture is only a generation thick at best, so you can solve the problem in 30 or so years at the worst. Someone needs to create a spreadsheet of every thread in D&D so I can figure out the curve on how often a thread goes fascism. Like every loving thread it's like 14 posts in *posts fascism*

a couple of star wars d&d sessions ago one of my players (whose character has no melee skill whatsoever) picked up a couple of antique dueling swords he found in an aristocrat's space yacht, and has been running around flourishing them everywhere. I allow him to roll a coordination (acrobatics analog) check for this whenever he wants to do some kind of cool move and impress somebody. it's pretty harmless, though I do keep upgrading the dice pools in such a way as to increase critical failure chance, as I think it'd be funny if he managed to chop one of his own arms off anyhoo, next session I'm going to try and bait him into crossing blades with a real nasty melee foe, just to gently caress with him.
