Wanna see the accident statistic on that 45° bridge

Be prepared for disappointment. :( It's not actually that steep.

quote:

Fortunately for it drivers — especially during bad weather or brake failure — looks can be deceiving.

Photos taken while directly facing the bridge's two-lane traffic shows it appearing far steeper than it actually is.

When seen from a distance at its side, from start to finish, its full .9-mile length reveals a gradual incline for drivers — far from the sharp 45-degree angle some photos suggest.

ETA:
Whoops! Here's the actual bridge.

This one is of France's Millau Viaduct. Leaving it in because it's pretty. :france:

The linked story about the trucker that died due to one of those says he slammed on his brakes and stopped, but the steel beams he was carrying kept going forward and went through the cab. That's a Dead Like Me style death.

I used to live on Long Island, and there are a pair of parkways that have low bridges and every single entrance has a "No Trucks" sign. But without fail, at least once a month, some truck driver would probably be following his GPS and get stuck under a bridge.

More than two parkways, but the Northern and Southern State parkways get the lion's share of the low bridge accidents because of it being two of the three main east/west limited-access highways on Long Island.

There's more parkways that suffer these accidents, including the Meadowbrook, Wantagh, and Sagtikos/Sunken Meadow.

It's a heavily used rail line, so trains would have to be diverted far north while they work on it. Plus, they'd have to raise the track for miles in both directions because trains aren't good with speed bumps. They can't lower the road because it has a main sewer or water line (I forgot which) running underneath. Then, to top it all off, that road is actually a heavily used highway (NC 15/501) connecting two commercial districts.

And in any event, why *should* the public spend a lick of money? It's clearly marked, the only damage is to the big steel beam protecting the bridge and to the occasional truck driven by a dumbass. The nature of that accident means that injuries are very unlikely, and the dumbass that drives into it is the only one out any money (modulo insurance, etc). The marginal cost of first responders having to show up and clean the mess is effectively zero, the only cost to the public is the opportunity cost of those responders being tied up cleaning up a wrecked truck instead of responding to something more serious, which is probably pretty damned small. Plus, the public gets the entertainment value of said dumbasses.

Is there just no concern about the structural integrity of the bridge being threatened from monthly impacts by trailers? Seems like the public should be at least a little concerned that the road setup causes routine accidents that potentially, even if unlikely, threaten to derail a train.

They installed a separate beam in front. Trucks hit that, not the actual bridge.

I can't be arsed to find it but my favorite was an RV trailed that just drove through at full speed and neatly beheaded the air conditioning unit off the top of it. Driver never noticed and almost certainly didn't find out until he got where he was going, walked into the camper and saw his new sun roof.

Edit: Turns out it was easy to find:

Wouldn't be surprised if the rental contracts included some clause that basically goes "if your dumb rear end tries to drive the truck under an under-height bridge, you agree you are 100% liable for the damages."

Last time I rented a Uhaul I paid the extra $15 for the insurance. Covers literally any damage to the vehicle, except there was a clause specifically excluding damage to the roof.

Why the gently caress does it take 2h for someone to come and take that poo poo down? I didn't even see any police or something to regulate the traffic before the crew arrives. You would think if it is almost a monthly occurance that they would be a bit more on point for cleanup.
