Because if he actually mocked the dead son of the sitting VP (or anyone, really), then I want proof. Because that is some poo poo.

I've been asking them "What's your opinion on Martin Luther King Jr.'s march from Selma to Montgomery, specifically the crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge? What advice would you give to Martin Luther King Jr. on how to make his protests less inconvenient to drivers?"

Part of me is impressed with the way you shifted the rhetorical focus in a way that could cause them to think differently.

Part of me is depressed that in order to do so you had to shift it to being an issue involving white people so that those chucklefucks would have an ounce of empathy.

I knew this had to be that woman from Crowder, it just had that weird mix of self-hatred, tortured logic, and poor writing. I'm really put off by any article that has an accusatory "you" tone when speaking to a general audience (this obviously isn't being written for Bernie Sanders supporters), but this really adds to my theory that people who enjoy communicating in this style are filled with barely-repressed contempt for everyone and that bile warps anything they write into something snarky and hostile.

quote:

Bad news, guys, honorable women do not respect a man who seeks handouts from elected officials. No woman, no potential wife, wants a husband who relies on politicians taking money from someone else’s husband, and giving it to her.
Does anyone doubt that if we asked her to give examples of men she respects and sees as traditionally masculine, we're going to see a lot of men whose lives and careers have been handed to them through family and other connections, if not literal handouts from exploiting political connections?

Most of our cultural ideas about Hell come from Dante, Milton, and de Spina rather than the Bible, so I guess it depends on who you mean by They.

The argument would be that socialism inevitably leads to "shared poverty," where no one has what they need, which is a characteristic of hell.

Not good enough. A leader has to be by the side of the victims' families within seconds of any tragedy, and he needs to be telling those families not to worry because all brown people will be exterminated in revenge for whatever happened. Even if brown people weren't responsible.

That isn't going far enough. A real leader would psychically sense the attacks ahead of time and start carpet bombing every country we don't like before the attack even started.

You know, I don't think that life in the Soviet Union was quite as bad as the propaganda suggests. I would guess that most people lived decent lives that at least half of the world would envy.

Nah the numbers really are on the "state terror on an incomprehensible scale" side when you're talking about Stalin. Think about what it takes for a leninist party-state to disown a recently-deceased head of state as a criminal.

It's hard for people who grew up in a modern western society to understand just how awful life can get, and still be lived. Learning about things that happened in Stalin's USSR was, for me, very similar to learning about the planning and logistical details of the Holocaust as it evolved from roving execution squads to a full on enterprise-scale network of murder factories.

Trying to put myself into the perspective of people who were involved with either certainly...expanded my horizons. To places I hadn't really wanted to consider.

This is not the thread I guess, but since we are on the topic. Less about the history and more about daily life and also not a super dry book.

Here are a couple that suggestions:

Behind the Urals - an American account of Stalin's Russia and the building of Magnitogorsk - I'm reading this now (it was source material for Adam Curtis' "Pandora's Box")

Everything Was Forever, Until it was No More - this is about the end of the Soviet Union - I haven't touched it yet.

I love how right wing people always assume that the only reason someone would support Sanders is because they personally want free poo poo from the government. Like - there is no entertaining the possibility that maybe the person supports increased spending on social programs because they want other people to have better opportunities, or because they think something like subsidized secondary education or increased minimum wage is good social policy that will benefit everyone. Nope, it's all "ME ME ME!"

It's projection! After all, those chucklefucks are only shouting so loudly so that they can gently caress over everyone else for what they perceive as their own benefit, after all.

Kind of like how one of the base motivations for anti-feminists is the creeping terror of how women might treat men if they were actually 'equal' (which to them means that the status of the majority genders in society were reversed from its present status, with a matriarchy instead of a patriarchy).
