Rupert Buttermilk posted:He really hosed up in the biggest way. Same with Jackie of course. No, because he gave that line to complete the story that he liked the job and that he wasn't calling off every so often because he hated it, but because his addiction meant more to him than that. He would seed those in there every so often to give his excuses some weight. And he will take regret to the grave, because he's not going to get help with his addiction or his underlying psychological issues. The only thing that isn't certain is how many podcasts/shows/opportunities he's going to piss away before he kicks off the mortal coil.

Does anyone have the Get John's Job saga from the megapost? I never downloaded all the stuff on Mega before it got taken down because I had no space on my old PC and I'm jonesing for that really bad. There should be 3 parts as the first two were listed but the last, the finale, was unlisted by Todd Packer originally for whatever reason. It's just gone from anywhere I can look and I'm sad

Sasquatch! posted:Artie obviously regrets it, but his dismissal was rooted in his psychological and addiction issues. You can argue that addicts just "make poor choices", but it's more complex than that. And let's be fair to Artie: he had a career (such as it was) before the Stern show. Even if being friends with Norm helped that out, he at least was known the public before going onto Stern. And given his contacts, he could have had a career that gave him a living after the Stern show as well. Seriously, if he somehow went completely clean after 2010 and got straight, he would still have a heck of a career.

Guess it's better to be dumb than addicted to heroin. (See also: Sal)

Thanks, I'll give it a listen. Also, you can download Gilbert's Podcasts from PodFM. I've got the first 20 queued up and waiting. Listened to the first one last night, and I loved it. Can't wait to get to Butch Patrick and Billy West.

I want to believe that, but I feel like Jackie does regret it, and just bottles it up so that he doesn't give Howard the satisfaction. You have to remember that on plugs alone, Jackie had a very lucrative career in "stand up", and that all disappeared when he left the show.

Jackie has said before he wishes he could make the choice differently. He knows he hosed up but he's massively different from Artie because he was never a fan. That gig was just a job to Jackie, it had way more meaning to Artie which is why he will always have an issue with how it ended. There's just an enormous difference between how each guy saw that job and trying to compare it and how they feel now that they don't have it anymore is just apples and oranges.

Sure, you can have regrets, but after a while you just move on with your life and continue living. While it sucks, Jackie will probably continue living his life the best he can. Eventually Artie will realize that as well, if he manages to make it the next few years without a significant health event that forces him to relapse.

I sort of sympathize (or is it empathize?);I used to have a 9-5 office job writing music and designing sound for casino games. Putting my diploma and skills to use every single day for something I'm genuinely interested in was incredible. Sure it got boring and frustrating sometimes, but overall it was a GOOD boring or frustrating. However, the poo poo economy being what it was, my fiancée couldn't find work, so things were tight. She got a great job in Montreal, so we moved from New Brunswick (it's like the state of Maine or Connecticut, except in Canada) for her job, and I applied my rear end off everywhere. After working at a stressful office job for 9 months, I got in at what is pretty much Porn Central. All joking aside, am I putting my audio knowledge and passion to good use during the day? No, not remotely. But I like my job for what it is. And right now, I'm at home, working on a laptop that was sent to me from Montana, because someone in the casino/betting business heard about my work and is now giving me a side job to work on. Artie needs to a) get officially clean, and b) make sure he's doing something even remotely like he used to, and the podcast seems pretty close to that, so I'm happy for him that he has that. Anyway, sorry about the rant, but I don't usually get to talk about this to anyone, and the people in this thread are pretty loving awesome.

Jackie asked Tom for his job back like a week after quitting. When Joke Hunt was still on 101, he would every so often try to sell his own rendition of how his quitting went down and sort of shift the blame on everyone else but himself. And just recently, he put Benjy on blast with tinfoil claims that his hiring not only ruined the dynamic of the show but was actually a ploy to force him out. He's definitely not as content as he claims, or at least still carries a major chip on his shoulder about leaving the show.

The funny thing with Howard is you can't ever tell when he's done but when he is then so are you. He fought for Jackie a bunch of times in negotiation and I think to Jackie he expected Howard to save the day and when he didn't it was just over and he knew he hosed up(boy I bet Jackie spent the next month drunk out of his mind). Jackie despises Benjy though and always has because yea, he thought Benjy was hired by Howard and Tom to show that there are other people to do Jackie's job if so called upon. I don't particularly think this is a crazy notion by Jackie either. Howard may not have seen it as such but I think to Tom knowing there was another writer Howard was fine with was exactly what he wanted when it came time to negotiate with Jackie.

The "I Want You Back" tapes are just brutal. Howard was at least cool about asking Gary to let them be played and letting him make money off it. I think he walked out with $28,000 or something which was probably more than he made in 6 months at the time. He definitely made the right choice but oofa, the ballbusting is legendary.

Three guys paid like $5000 each, then it dropped to the next wave of guys who paid $200. I'm shocked there weren't more fans out there who wouldn't pay more than that for a chance to a) come into the studio and meet everyone and b) be part of a bit.

Be part of one of the best bits of all time. At the time I was working in Philly, and couldn't take the time off to drive up there, so it wasn't the money that was an issue. Hell $200 is cheap just to visit the studio, let alone be on the show for a great bit.

He gives up pretending to know anything about his career about halfway into it and just starts being incredibly rude to him. It's also one of several episodes where he starts going off on a long tangents about Danny Kaye and Sir Laurence Olivier loving each other in the rear end. I love Gilbert's podcast, because I'm an old gently caress and I've actually heard of all the old fucks he talks to every week, but it's always so rewarding when he gets completely unhinged.
