How is The Operational Art of War these days? I saw that IV still dosn't have a date out on it, and the last time I played it was TAOW II, and reading this thread made me remember playing Red Lighting on the Amiga a long time ago. Are there any other games at TOAW's level, and is III playable?

The Decisive Campaign games are generally regarded as being the better operational-level game with an appropriate level of detail for a grognard game.

As is the Decisive Battles: Korsun Pocket/Ardennes Offensive, Battles in Italy and Battles in Normandy series. The tech level/interface on these are even older, but like DC, they're easier to understand and deliver a better experience.

The main draw of TOAW 3 is the sheer breadth and depth of scenarios you get.

For optimal coverage there needs to be ten threads, eight for all the individual players, one where players can talk to each other, and one where observers can talk poo poo about the players. We won't just be invading each-other, we'll be invading Let's Play as a sub-forum.

Im running a War in the Pacific LP and my opponent Paradigmblue also has a thread. Not sure how active his is however.

There are a bunch of Dominions 4 LP's with multiple viewpoints as well.

Doesn't apply to Victory of Glory. I may try the older Hannibal, though.

I seem to recall a few Civil War games with goons commanding each other - kinda want to say it was some Grey Hunter lunacy.

I ended up getting TOAW III. Any windows past Windows 98, 2000 or XP is out of date and it warns you about it.

Updating it is taking longer than the original download.

edit...and it's crapping out. File 1: An error occurred when downloading information from the server. Trying a manual download for it.

Also any new DC people, feel free to hit me up for a game.

He is, not sure if he's announced exactly which battle but for some reason I think it was Antietam. No source for that, but he is definitely doing another one in some capacity.

DCB sends data home and here are the results until January.
http://www.vrdesigns.net/?p=1278#more-1278

85.2% play Germans
87.4% play single player
94.5% play against Normal AI

Then the chart changes and German players overwhelmingly support Hitler, and Soviet players overwhelmingly decide to pick Moscow as victory city.

More charts and talk available about the options.

I used to defend Moscow most games but I've since decided Rostov is much, much easier. If you load up on activation bonuses (Roll well on Budyenny or immediately replace him with Rokossovsky, give him 2 backbones, give south priority) you'll end up with like 50/50 partial/full activations with almost no un-activated armies. With so many troops down there to start with you can win quite a few battles during the summer and the Germans can't send an AGC PG to the south to stop you unless they're friendly with Hitler.

Alikchi
Aug 18, 2010

Thumbs up I agree

Rostov as an objective also consumes a poo poo ton of German fuel since it's so far away.

E: while we're on the topic of DC:B I'll mention that it comes with the DC Community Project - some pretty powerful modding tools, including a map editor. I'm working on a northern Italy/Austria/Balkan area map right now.

First time I mismanaged the German army and had no way to win before winter. Think long thin lines along the rails and no control over anything else to the side of them. Train Nazi status: supremely happy.

In the second game as Soviets I managed to hold the Germans at the Dniepr for months until they managed to actually bleed me white and broke through. I also missed the decision mechanic.

I'm probably going to get it now that it's on sale, but one of the reasons I haven't yet is the fact that it doesn't feel like 41 is a very fun time to play the Soviets. Backed up by the fact that 85% of the players play Germany. I want to push on Berlin, not be a Nazi. Maybe a future title will tackle the war in the east 41-45. I think there's a lot of room for a good title on the subject that is faster and easier to play then War in the East.
