Wireless is still pretty meh, but it's made good strides. You using an iPhone or Samsung?

Here's a few options you might like—feel free to completely ignore if nothing screams "buy me!" to you.

The stretch: Decibullz Wireless $150

Pros:
—custom mold in-ears you do at home
—sound is okay; it's BT after all
—wire connecting the buds hangs behind your neck, tough for it to get caught on poo poo
—battery charges using a normal microUSB
—comes with a case to port around
—was designed by a Wes Welker clone specifically for gym use—sweat included

Cons:
—not some audiophile darling
—the molding process is like doing the mouthguards you did as a kid. If you don't get it right it can be annoying to fix (use a hairdryer for this)
—dubious warranty

The Sure Things: JLab Epic Bluetooth 4.0 Wireless Sports Earbuds $99
MEElectronics X7 mk II$99.99

Notes: generally follow the ISO226:2003 note emphasis—meaning bassy music, some downplayed mids, and cymbals/other sibilant sounds get emphasized. Basically, every sound you'd get in a :rimshot: gets a volume bump.

JLab Pros:
—perfectly normal, standard in-ears, but bluetooth
—IPX4 rating means sweat-proof, can handle a splash
—A remote

Cons:
—BT audio is eh
—"Limited lifetime" warranty, whatever that means
—reports of discomfort/annoying fit

MEElectronics Pros:
—a good company for inexpensive gems
—can reportedly handle sweat
—uses the aptx and AAC codecs for bluetooth, so they'll have the best audio of all the BT in-ears here no matter if you have an iPhone or Android phone
—Remote

Cons:
—1-yr warranty
—the memory-wire ear loop can be a little annoying

The Bargain: Huaham International Version Bluetooth 4.1 Sweat Proof Sports Noise Reduction NFC Earphone $39.98

Notes: colleagues at the Wirecutter wanted to like this one, but it's got its issues.

Pros:
—affordable
—build quality is good
—NFC

Cons:
—Audio worst of the three
—some people have trouble with the fit (this can be solved with the right Comply tips
—water tends to get into the charging port, but this isn't an issue if you're observant.

Thanks! Just added the ath-m50x to my wishlist!

I asked about them on the last page but I ended up buying the JBL Reflect Mini BT wireless headphones and they sound decent and fit well.

It'd be nice if they included 3 sizes of horns and 3 sizes of plugs, and that they were interchangeable. I need medium sized horns but large sized plugs but they only include small horns/small plugs or medium horns/medium plugs (with the option of ditching the horns and using separate S/M plugs only.

I have one ear that is slightly bigger than the other so getting a proper seal is hard :(

How much of a risk would it be to buy a pair of Jaybird X2's on Amazon Warehouse deals? I've never bought anything on Amazon Warehouse, and the last pair of wireless headphones I had were the LG Tones+.

Fender Anarchist

So I'm in need of a couple pairs of headphones, this seems to be the place to ask.

1. I need a good mobile set that I can carry in my backpack. I generally don't listen to music while running/jogging/whatever, just while sitting at the school studying, so either IEMs or a sturdy, preferably folding supra-aural set. Somewhere around $20-30 would be ideal.

2. I need a good set for home use to replace my crap skullcandy set that's currently held together with twist ties. Super- or circum-aural, with as good sound isolation as I can get (my roommate and his friends are loud as poo poo and my current set, while they sound fine, don't isolate worth a gently caress.) Roughly same budget or a little higher, maybe up to $40.

Additional note for 2: I have a pocket guitar amp (this guy, the "classic rock" model) that I plug my headphones into. Currently I have to swap my computer speakers (which the headphones are plugged into) from the computer to that to play, and if I want backing tracks/tempo clicks I gotta run an aux cable from my computer front plug over to the amp, and it's just a hassle to switch back and forth. Also, I have to turn the amp gain down when playing with pedals so it doesn't distort the "wrong" way, and when I turn the computer volume knob up to compensate I get real bad mains buzz. It's the worst when running through my computer speaker; it's barely audible when I plug my headphones directly into the guitar amp, so I think that the computer speaker is the main culprit.

Is there a good, cheap amplifier, preferably with 2 inputs, that I can use to crank the volume up? I feel asking for a mixer knob might be a bit much, but I can control the volume of the computer on... the computer so that's less of an issue; I do need it to be able to play both lines simultaneously, though.

No risk. Amazon Warehouse deals come with the same 30 days no questions asked return policy that anything sold by Amazon comes with.

Has anyone had experience with these earbuds?:

Panasonic ErgoFit In-Ear Earbud Headphones RP-HJE120-D

(They come in several different colors.)

My wife got a pair of them last week. I've been trying them out since she's away for a few days, and they seem okay for $10 earbuds (on sale now for $6). I don't need anything amazing, and the things actually fit comfortably in my ears, which feels like a rarity nowadays. And the reviews are numerous, with a 4.5/5 average.

New Egg has Philips SHP9500 for $60.

How do these compare to Sennheiser HD 598s?

I don't have to get new headphones right now, so would it be better to wait for a deal on 598s?

I've been eyeing the SHP9500's on newegg/newegg ebay for a few days now...
I already have Fidelio X2's and Sennheiser 598SE's but I'm seriously considering buying 5 sets of these just because... (one for me and each of my groomsmen.)

$60 is pretty much, "just loving buy it" territory.
You can make it up by bringing your lunch to work every day for a couple of weeks, or not going out to dinner one night, or not buying starbucks every day for 2 weeks, etc...

I say just buy them, and if you find a good deal on the HD598's, buy those too.
It never hurts to have a pair of backup headphones.

For the record though, I'd say they're probably very similar in terms of sound clarity, but the Sennheiser's are definitely the more comfortable and better built headphone.

I just wish there was an add on to remove those reviews and re-adjust their ratings.

Right. If there was a way to filter them out, I'd be thrilled.

Oh well.

I've still been doing research to find some good gym/outdoor buds and I think I'm ready to sacrifice some audio quality for the convenience of wireless. I've considered buying the Jaybird X2's and then I ready that the next series (X3) comes out this spring, which may reduce the X2 price a good bit. Normally I would just wait, but my Bose IE2's are on their last leg. The cord is cracked and it's just a matter of time before they crap out :ohdear:

I have a question about the Audio Technica M50x: are the ear cups actual leather? I have a pair of M35 and while they're comfortable for a few hours before they bother me, the fake plactic leather on these is starting to dissolve and leaves annoying flakes of it everywhere.

e: Also, is there enough of a difference between the M40x and the M50x to justify the latter being $100 more?

I don't think it is real, but the upside of the M50x is that there are a decent amount of pads that work for them. Basically anything that would work with a Sony MDR-V6 or V7506 will also work with the M50x, so you can put on leather, velour, whatever after the fact.

I wouldn't know much about the M40x, but if Amazon has an okay enough return policy maybe try that? The M50x are the successor to the M50, which was a super popular set of headphones for a long time.

I'm looking for something to take on a backpacking type of trip instead of my Ety ER-4s. So basically some cheap-rear end IEMs that I wouldn't mind losing or breaking as much, but would provide decent isolation (planes, shouty locals etc) and not sound like rear end. Not expecting Ety-level stuff in either category, obviously, but I do have a set of 3.5mm tri-flange silicone tips that might help.

Budget is, well, as little as possible, as these would only be backups and I'd rather spend money on Thai hookers. I've heard good things about the Xaiomi Pistons, are they any decent (and which version)?

Pistons don't isolate so probably not a good choice.

I use this set for pretty much exactly what you're describing - http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Stereo-Universal-Headset-Inline/dp/B00OGU0K9G

They're single BAs, sound surprisingly good and have a 2mm nozzle so they'll fit your Ety triflanges/foamies. I use mine with Shure Olives and the isolation is excellent.
