LOCUST FART HELL posted:linkle's second mission is some bullshit, darunia storms the enemy base to get wrecked by volga and a couple dozen lizalfos, and if he dies it's game over. you gotta storm it as quick as you can and there's practically no chance to explore and get all the keeps and keep him alive at the same time, because even if you leave just volga alone with him he goes down like a sack of potatoes, and of course defeating volga completes the mission I dunno, I had time to get everything and finish the mission on my first try. I think all the chests are in the keeps at the top anyway, so it shouldn't take too long to take a quick trip to restore Darunia's health if you need to.

As a fan of both Legend of Zelda and the [Franchise] Warriors series, finding this on the 3DS has been an absolute blast. Just got to Linkle's first mission and thus far it feels right, both as a Warriors game and as a Zelda game. I'm not exactly expecting it to change the world, but it's solid and entertaining so far and I'm looking forward to seeing what odd weapons and characters pop up and whether anything's going to top crossbow gun-kata. (Yes, I'm guessing.) Already made the mistake of punting a Cucco in the middle of a mission that was going badly. This is fine.

TacticalNecromancy posted:Already made the mistake of punting a Cucco in the middle of a mission that was going badly. This is fine. Cuccos are kinda bullshit because the follow you around, stay as close to you as possible, can't be hurt by enemies, and there's no way to make them leave. When a Cucco shows up it's just a matter of when, not if, you're going to smack it enough to make it mad. YggiDee posted:I've never played a Musou game before, is there a "Hyrule Warriors (Legends) for Idiots" guide out there? As a Musou veteran I can give you some quick tips. First, officers are what are really important. Don't spend your time standing around smacking grunts since it won't accomplish your objectives. Find out which officers are important as far as missions and head for them. If you're not sure what your current mission is, on the pause screen there's an option called "Battle Log" that lists your current objectives and it will highlight which officers are important to the mission, whether it's a red officer you need to beat, a keep you need to take, or a blue officer you need to keep alive/escort somewhere. Remember that you have combos that use the Strong Attack button, don't just mash Y all the time if you can help it, as most characters get more out of their Strong Attack combos (but it's personal preference, for example I hardly ever use Link's sword Strong Attacks, I just mash Y for him constantly). In general, your C2 combo (Y then X) is a juggle that launches enemies in the air, C3 (Y Y X) is usually (though in this game, not always) a multi-hit attack, and C4/C5 are almost always for clearing crowds. You probably won't use the block button much, as dodging is faster and puts you in better position to attack the enemy. Generally the block button is used purely to center the camera behind your character. Speaking of dodging, on most enemy officers, you'll probably only be able to get in a 3 hit combo before they start blocking your attacks, so the best strategy for them is usually to hit three times, dodge around behind them, and then attack 3 more times, and keep that up, usually only stopping if they're about to expose their weak point or about to use a strong attack (like when the Moblin starts charging up to spin). Make sure you keep an eye on your status messages, I know it's easy to miss them while you're beating up bad guys, but the two most important ones to watch for are reports that the allied base is under attack, or that your commander is under attack, because if either of those fall you lose. You will also get messages that generic officers (like the Hylian Captain) or keeps are in danger. Unless a particular generic officer/keep is marked as important (such as messengers in some missions, or ones where you are required to take specific keeps), feel free to ignore them, don't rush across the battlefield to help them because all it does is slow you down. That should be enough to get you started, I can't think of much else basic info that's important though I'm sure others will be able to add more/correct me on some points.

That's a really good newbie guide. One thing to note which Twelve briefly touches on at the end of their post: Musou games love to déluge you in objectives and NPCs screaming for help, which can be quite intimidating, but don't panic. As Twelve mentioned, feel free to ignore any non-critical NPCs calling for help. Your playable characters can generally take care of themselves, but definitely have a tendency to just take way more damage than they should, so it's often beneficial to just switch to a character on low health and help them find a heart pot or kill whatever officer is causing them problems, then switch back, since most of the time, any of them dying means you lose. As far as objectives go, you should prioritise - objectives like killing specific officers who are starting to move will draw their route on the map when they spawn in, so you can quickly see how far they are from their destination. If their destination is a keep, you can always send one of your characters to that keep to tie them up while you do other stuff by using command mode. Once they start fighting the character you sent to their destination, switch to that character, kick their asses, then switch back to your other character (don't forget to issue a move order to the character you leave behind so they don't go running off in the wrong direction). In general, command mode is really powerful and you should be using it frequently! Playable characters can almost always take care of an objective without needing backup as long as you are actively controlling them, so you can station characters in different parts of the map so that you can instantly respond to an objective by just switching to the nearest character.

Another note for various characters: on top of the basic weapon combos, some of them have gimmicks. Whenever you get a new person check their combo list to see if they have multi-press abilities like Lana (YXXX with more unlocked later) or the Fire Rod. As for gimmicks, sometimes a new weapon will explain them but some of them can be easy to miss. Shiek, for example; each of her combos has a different element, and your C1 strong attack will change depending on the element of the last combo you did. Water makes a shield, fire a delayed-blast mine, lightning a whirling knockback aura, et cetera. She seems pretty lackluster without knowing about those, but she becomes VERY powerful if you learn how to use them (though their power/duration seems to have been nerfed in Legends). That's stuff you can learn later, though, once you get used to the basics. Mainly be willing to play around with different combos. Every weapon seems to have one that's above-and-beyond the others in usefulness, but it's not always in the same way and people may disagree on which one it is for any given character. Edit: oh, one more thing that's handy to know, Hyrule Warriors has two button configs that different people prefer, so you'll likely see combos like BBBY or YYYX used interchangeably. Also the standard combo notation is C1 for X, C2 for YX, C3 for YYX et cetera but some people start at C0 using the number for the number of weak attacks before a strong. If something doesn't work in-game like folks online say it should, check if it was transposed a notch. Bruceski fucked around with this message at 22:30 on Mar 25, 2016 |

I used to use it a fair bit when I played as him. Volga actually seems easier in Legends to me, that move where he jumps at you in like half a second doesn't seem to have a shockwave on it anymore so it doesn't hurt and make him a pain like in the Wii U version.

linkle is a lot of fun and i like that they based a moveset around bomb arrows. she's very good at taking out clustered enemies as a combo will fill her rapid fire gauge, rapid firing will fill her special gauge, then using special will finish off the higher level enemies caught in your fire, which adds to your rapid fire gauge. it's a good positive feedback loop i'm just starting to play with toon link, i love that he keeps his roll for his dodge. he has a great air game with the deku leaf, midair he can combo with y and do a big ground pound with x. his basic strong attack is a leap to set that up and a lot of his strong combo finishers launch him and his enemies. also having aryll as his partner who speaks for him is extremely cute and good. he has a fair amount of cooldown on his bigger attacks though (his special especially) Bruceski posted:I did like "Grandma told me I was actually the legendary hero!"
