I've heard of cases that judges have thrown out due to an over abundance of evidence making it too unwieldy to try so maybe that's the route they're going for. Give the authorities so much evidence that they're bogged down trying to pick through it all.

Was he objecting to the process of everybody paying for what they ordered, like the check being split up by seat? Or the full check just being divided by the number of diners for the sake of simplicity?

If it was the former, he may have just been being a cheapass. If it was the first, he's an insane person.

I'm not exactly sure what he was thinking but he said it right after we got the bill and my dad said "okay so how are we going to divide up this check."

I had been painfully polite throughout the rest of the dinner because family and all that but at this point I just started snickering uncontrollably.

Other highlights of the evening included him bitching about how "those drat millenials" are just voting for Hillary or Bernie Sanders because they're "too stupid," somehow managing to blame my aunt's outdated version of internet explorer on Obamacare, and painfully explaining why an already racist against italians joke is funny in a way that somehow was also racist against blacks. Eventually my rad hippie socialist mom (who's birthday party this whole thing was for) started trolling him every time he said "liberals :argh:" by interrupting him and going "oo me I'm a liberal what are you gonna do about it :T"

Sorry, I didn't mean to turn this into an E/N thing but goddamn between him and my shrill aunt telling me about all the things wrong with her work computer* this was an actually physically painful experience :v:

*She's a nurse, and one day she couldn't get in to their EHR anymore. She called the EHR company's tech support, who quickly told her that she had IE8 and needed IE10 or 11 (which she explained to me as "they said I have an 8 and I needed a 10 or 11!" and which I only worked out meant IE about half way into this rant) so she angrily demanded that no actually that's their problem and they need to put 10 or 11 on her computer because it's their drat software and this is totally unacceptable that they would REFUSE to do that.

Yep an hour long recording made by judge Grasty

Discendo Vox

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.
The main story is here, from OPB. It's damning stuff, and worth a read. A small taste:

quote:

The lawmakers wanted information from law enforcement, including what tactics the FBI anticipated taking against the militants. They wondered aloud, for example, whether refuge power would be cut. Law enforcement personnel repeatedly declined answering. The lawmakers continued to ask.

They also wanted to know what criminal charges the occupiers might face. After getting nowhere with that line of inquiry, coalition members asked with whom they could negotiate on behalf of the Ammon Bundy-led militants.

“There is no negotiation,” said Marion County Sheriff Jason Myers, one of the local law enforcement officers at the meeting. “Just go home. We’re not going to negotiate because we just want them to leave this community.”

“The issue that causes concern is not entirely just the occupation of that facility, it’s the other people this has brought into our community,” said Harney County Deputy Sheriff Brian Needham. “There have been many threats made. There are people in the community that are dangerous people.”

Finally, over the phone, Fiore tried to turn the meeting into a call to action.

“The BLM has become a bureaucratic agency of – basically – terrorism,” she said. “So at what point do we band together as elected officials, and say, ‘Enough is enough of the BLM?’ Can we divert this conversation? At what point are we going to actually do something for our citizens?”

Judge Steve Grasty, the leading elected official in Harney County, dismissed that notion out of hand and asked Fiore and others not to call federal officers “terrorists.”

Coalition members pressed the FBI to compromise with militants, specifically with their demand that federal land be transferred to states.

“Would it be possible for somebody, whether it’s the U.S. Attorney’s Office, to say that ‘We agree that there needs to be a conversation at another level,’” said Washington Rep. Graham Hunt, a Republican from Pierce County who has since resigned after it was revealed he misstated his U.S. military record.

There's also a special profile of COWS linked from the same story.

Local news orgs, KOIN, OPB, and Oregonlive, have all had really incredible coverage of this, but the Grasty recording is the biggest scoop yet. Their reporters, especially Les Zaitz from Oregonlive who had been following the Greg Palmer angle, are now receiving threats against themselves and their families.

More details on the FBI agent's unreported discharge and coverup.

Documentation of threats from occupation supporters is ongoing. Targets included the governor.

Extinction for our time

Ryan Bundy has written a short manifesto. Twists up the Constitution and Christianity into a bunch of self-serving nonsense.

A Man Who Blames Homosexuality for the State of America posted:

In review, the 1st principle is personal agency, and accountability for your choices. The 2nd is to live righteously and repent of our sins. The 3rd is to be educated, to know the truth of many things, God, freedom, agency and many more things. This is what we were doing in Harney County, Oregon. We were teaching the people true principles of freedom and it was going well, too well. We had to be silenced. We have committed no crime, but the government had to stop us from teaching. The people must be kept ignorant or else they may rise up and reduce their power. Well I hope you all are still learning. Do not be controlled. Be actively involved in a good cause of your own free will and choice.

I wonder if anyone could manage to knock it into the heads of the Bundy clan that their vaunted freedom comes at the expense of others, or are they too dim to see beyond their self-interest. And that is completely beside the enormous hypocrisy between their actions and their loudly proclaimed Christianity. There isn't a bit of the Bundy's beliefs that isn't an incredible mixture of ignorance and bullshit.

No, his belief that he didn't need to pay money to graze his cattle came later. What came first is the BLM restricted grazing in order to protect the endangered desert tortoise. Among other things, they simply cut the amount of cattle you were allowed to graze below the point that cattle ranching in the area was viable. There were about 50 cattle ranchers in the area in 1993 but by 2014 Bundy was the only one left. Bundy was facing an existential threat to his way of life and came upon the idea that the federal government wasn't allowed to own land at all and thus he could graze as many cattle as he wanted AND he didn't have to pay to graze them either.

If you don't believe that, see their father's three point "philosophy" where essentially you get to keep whatever you take and use. So if someone, say, a redneck with a gun decides to move in and take your home while you're on vacation, it's your fault for not being strong enough to defend it. Naturally, this only applies when they are the ones doing the taking. Anybody trying this on them is an evil tyrant.

Okay, I get this, but given what we know if his ranching ability (leaving his cattle to graze at random without so much as immunizing them) and his wonderful personality, having real pressure does not make me any more sympathetic to him.

Also I was looking for something else on him and found that apparently during proceedings his lawyers were trying to ensure that he could remain free on bail before the trial. The prosecution produced his own radio show with recordings of him ranting that he would die a free man.
