I got Quake 4 to run and I'm now up to the waste processing facility's boss battle (Stroggified Voss), and I've encountered a strange bug. For the first few seconds of the fight, all projectiles and weapons fire is invisible. I shoot rockets and hear the sound, but don't see the rockets or the explosion. I can't even see railgun shots. More importantly, this also applies to the BOSS's projectiles too, so I get hit with invisible homing rockets. It fixes itself after a few minutes, but those few minutes can cripple me for the rest of the fight since enemy shots tear through my armor and health like I'm the worlds first papier-mache soldier. This fight is ALREADY a pain in the rear end (I'm on the second-highest difficulty). I'm starting to consider just cheating my way past it because it is no fun.

A guy in one of my high school classes, when we were given near-free reign on what to do a final semester powerpoint presentation on, chose 'The Death of PC Accel', and failed because he was goony as poo poo about it. While I understood what he was talking about, having read a bunch of PC Accel issues back in the day, literally no one else in the class had any idea what it was he was all hung up about. Well, that's my 'old gaming magazine' story.

I wonder if Apogee was really peddling that, or if PC Zone here was just making an educated guess. Also not sure about the (presumably snarky) quotation marks around "enhanced". This period was marked by several moderately controversial episodes, including the accidental inclusion of a pornographic Doom modification on a covermounted CD-ROM, an article about the infamously bug-ridden Frontier 2: First Encounters illustrated with a large photograph of a piece of excrement wrapped with a bow, a joystick group test which featured a model dressed as a nun (testing each joystick for "phallusicity"), and a one-page comic by regular contributor Charlie Brooker, graphically depicting animal cruelty (originally intended as a comment on the violence against animals frequently portrayed in the Tomb Raider games) which resulted in the offending issue being withdrawn from W H Smith newsagents.

Reaching back a bit, but how does one run Perdition's Gate? I grabbed the .ZIP but it contains what looks like the full file structure of a DOS-era game. I see files called PG-RAW.WAD and PG-RAW-X.WAD, as well as a bunch with DEMO in the title. Do I just throw one of those into a source port and call it a day, or are there other assets and stuff I need to use from that zip?

I don't know why people still insist on releasing mods this way. If you need a batch file to launch a mod, you've packed the mod horribly wrong.

So the SW ad took the exact same slogan but replaced the flowers by a grenade. It was dumb and hilarious.

It's kind of bizarre to learn that it was related but only by the engine. Who titles an unrelated game due to its underlying tech? Interplay did it again with Descent: FreeSpace, which was loosely based on the Descent engine and developed by an offshoot of Parallax, but otherwise completely different. It was actually good though.

Reminds me that I regrettably need to DL the latest BDoom so I can verify that my DUMP map doesn't still break horribly with it. I can accept the Imps jumping right into the instakill lava from their ledges, because that's hilarious, but some of the monster teleports apparently are teleporting them directly inside 3D floors, which pushes them down toward the bottom of the 3D floor, which pushes them into the lava, where they immediately die, and that's... not right.

For lack of a better term, I've called those "space games." The genre where spaceships have a top speed and laying off the throttle causes you to slow to a stop, where the most complicated elements are rebalancing energy or selecting ordnance to fire and where shooting down bombs before they hit your capital ship is the order of the day. They're definitely not sims but they're definitely my jam.
