Pirates open Sunday, i don't have tickets but I'll probably go downtown and hit the tailgate parties in the lots anyway. Radio is actually bitching about losing Alvarez's home run potential, they seem to forget that he struck out constantly and posted a 0.1 WAR despite hitting 27 home runs in 2015, Jaso is an upgrade in every single way and gets on base like some kind of magical dreadlocked leprechaun.

I feel really bad for the Pirates because I lived in Atlanta from 1989-1994 and got to witness them being amazing but literally one game not good enough. I'm glad they have made the playoffs recently.

graph posted:i think pirates fans get a little stockholmy on the two previous iterations of winning teams Absolutely, fact of the matter is that Alvarez was a draft bust and a liability. He was lucky enough to be above average at the showiest thing in baseball, but he was subpar at everything else. Jaso is not a power man but he has an incredible eye at the plate and he is defensively a far better player than Alvarez will ever be. graph posted:serpico hit a grand salami yesterday ftw. i think he's going to be real good this year for the pirates Agreeing with this, and even without home runs the Royals have proven that putting men on the bags by any means necessary turns into points on the board. The dead ball era strategies still work.

Pittsburgh was economically falling apart in the seventies and early eighties but we had the Pirates and the Steelers to hold us together.

Travis Snyder played in Pittsburgh but then the Orioles picked him up and like everything else from Pittsburgh he sucked. Now we have no left fielders and no good starting pitchers, because Pittsburgh sucks rear end forever.

I'll miss Alvarez's monster home runs for the sheer spectacle but he was a liability on offense and defense, no doubt. WHYGAVS had a good post on the rotation and the role of fifth starters. His blog is irreplaceable for pirates writing.

Pittsburgh hosts the National Supercomputing Center. Everything about Pittsburgh is computer-related. The Pirates base their decisions heavily on statistics, which is also very computer.
