I loved Life is Strange, but I'd say absolutely give it until the end of the second episode and if it doesn't grab you by then it probably never will. Still on with the The Witcher 3 and there are so many quests. That's a good thing as unlike Skyrim I'm not yet finding them tedious. The vast majority are some combination of interesting to play, a nice little story or give you some agency in how to deal with things. However, you can only show one quest on the map at once, and the game area is huge. I don't want to have to scroll to each quest and look at the map to see if there are any scavenger hunts or notable gwent opponents en route to where I'm going. I found a mod for it, but it's not the sort of thing I should have to mod in. The game's UI is decent but could use a bit of work as there's so much stuff it creaks a bit, I might be looking at what a merchant has but I can't sort them and have to scroll through each of the pictures to know what each thing is, a problem if it's an alchemist with dozens of formulae on sale. Crafting isn't much better, all your old diagrams hang around (or I haven't worked out how to get rid) and it makes it a pain to look through all the armours and swords you could craft to find the few that might be useful. Let me permanently get rid of the gear that's 15 levels lower than me.

I really feel all the crafting/potions/alchemy stuff could really be pared down like 75% and Witcher would be much better for it.

Perfect Potato posted:The level design took a huge nosedive in the sequel. I cleared the first jungle section and was playing as the cop again and the level he was in was just so loving open that I would die instantly and have no idea what happened. Eventually I got to a screen where you enter from the right, and once you go past the first glass room you start next to you're more or less surrounded on all sides by dogs, fat men, and who the gently caress knows what else. Last time i bothered playing that piece of poo poo. I'm pretty sure I'm on the last mission and I still can't muster up the give-a-poo poo to finish it. I wasn't joking when I said they removed everything good about the first game, and the level design really confirms that. Every level seems designed around a special path the developers want you to take and you have to work out what that is, as opposed to the first game which was fast, frenetic, and all about improvising. I think the worst was that one mission where you play as the detective raiding a warehouse or something and you go upstairs and find like 4 long conga lines of about 25 bad guys weaving in and out of each other in this bizarre pattern and you have to slowly, carefully draw one or two away from the others at a time. That's the one that confirmed to me the devs had no idea what made the first one popular. And that's not even getting into the overemphasis on guns, the removal of the mask system in favor of characters that barely differ from each other (some of whom have no abilities or really lame ones), missions where you can't switch weapons so you have to carefully conserve ammo until you reach ammo boxes, and all kinds of crap. The actual gameplay of smashing someone's dome in is still the same as it was but they hosed up everything around it so bad.

I like the Witcher 3 all right, but I do think it has TOO many main story missions that don't serve the plot of the game. There was definitely a point where I just wanted to mainline the rest of the game because I wanted to see how everything ended up. The game has a bunch of built in mandatory side-quests that I feel just get in the way of things and don't really feel necessary. I'm thinking specifically of the dwarves you have to help when on a specific island. When I encountered them, I just started looking for any option that would let me bust down the door and tell them to go gently caress themselves because I didn't want to have to run around and escort their buddies back to the hut at that point in the game.

I always feel really weird having very much enjoyed Hotline Miami 2 I can even see all the stuff that people hate, and I often agree, but when it works it feels so good to nail a level, getting fifty plus combos across multiple floors and taking extreme risks to keep the momentum going with the absolutely incredible music thumping in the background. It even makes it hard for me to go back to the previous game, since I can blast through that entire thing in about an hour with the experience gained from the sequel. Anyway to complain about something, in Knights of the old republic the battle music quickly becomes very grating. For one its way louder than it needs to be on the default settings, and it quickly loses its impact when the ultra-dramatic knock off John Williams score blasts in for a couple of minutes every time kill a stray rat. Also you find lots of stat boosting headgear that have no downside apart from the fact that without exception every single one of them are eye meltingly ugly, the one I have equipped now makes it looks like I decided to strap a SNES to my face. khwarezm has a new favorite as of 06:38 on Apr 2, 2016 |

Shadowrun Hong Kong seems like it could have been a much better game if it were about half as long. It took me over 45 hours, and I wanted it to be over long before that. Not only would 20 hours or so left me wanting more rather than burned out on it, it would have given them more time to devote to fixing the many bugs and mistakes and making the game more consistent. Some of the missions are really good and show a lot of effort put into accommodating different play styles and character builds and other missions feel totally half-arsed. At its best, the game gives you options for how you want to go about things and it lets you make full use of your abilities and those of your team. At its worst it just arbitrarily restricts you from doing stuff or presents you with a situation where you have no options. It also would have been really nice if they'd managed in any of the three games they've made so far to include a decent tutorial, because so much stuff is badly explained or not explained at all. It would also be great if rewards didn't seem so random. You never know, when someone says they're rich and can make it worth your while, if you're going to get 500 nuyen or 5000, and you won't find out till you accept the offer.

Artifact hunting in Stardew Valley. The vast majority of artifacts can be found by either fishing or digging on worm tiles in the overworld. Fishing isn't too bad if you enjoy the mini game but even if you have the right bait and tackle you might have to catch a few hundred or thousand fish before you exhaust all the ones you can get from fishing. The real problem is the ones you can only get from digging. Even on your horse going around the whole town and its surrounding areas takes the majority of an in-game day and you'll encounter anywhere between zero and two worm tiles on any given screen. Some artifacts can only be found on certain screens and have a 1% chance of appearing if you dig up a worm tile. So it may take a whole in-game year of doing nothing but hunting these things to find them all, if you're lucky. Even worse, the game doesn't really use a true RNG so what spawns where on any given day is determined in advance. Even if you savescum and repeat the next day or even the next week over and over you'll get the exact same items appearing in the exact same locations. So maybe that one last artifact you needed spawned on some tile back in Spring and you missed it and it's just not gonna appear again anywhere for another year and there's no way to know this. You just have to check every single worm tile you can find every day and hope for the best. It doesn't help that they're almost invisible against the terrain some seasons.

Online shooters with portable ammo refills, one or both of the following creates a problem: 1: Does the game have a grenade/rocket launcher weapon that can kill in one "close enough" shot? Does the ammo box refill it? Enjoy having people who just sit in one spot and spam grenades/rockets in a doorway the entire loving rounds! 2: People just shoot down doorways or preempitvely shoot when going around a corner. Is that a cloud of smoke? Randomly shoot through it. Was that a shadow or an enemy? gently caress it, shoot anyways! Looking in the general direction of where the enemy is? Just hold down you fire button! Who gives a poo poo if you miss, you can just stand over an ammo box and be 100% full! The problem gets even worse when the game scales up. Like ok, CoD like shooters you'll have maybe 1 or 2 (even in the worst case, its only 6) assholes that shoot as they go around a corner or shoot at literally anything and everything. Play Battlefield? Enjoy 5, 10, 20, gently caress it, all 32 people just firing into doorways. Hey, they'll get a kill eventually right? Planetside 2, enjoy trying to rush into a 20x20 room with 150 players in there holding mouse 1 over the doorway. And of course the thing you would want to use, grenades, are loving worthless unless the guy is 2 meters next to it and good luck peeking around a corner to chuck a grenade 20 yards to hopefully blow up a few guys while they sit stock still mouse 1'ing over the opening. Its really bad when my best killstreaks in these games is when I just go around a corner holding mouse 1 or blind fire in the enemy's direction (don't try and actually aim or anything, the second you take peeking out, looking down the scope and putting the mouse under the "shoot here" icon you'll get killed by the 10 guys holding mouse 1 with a 200 round gun) or randomly shooting a rocket down a hallway. I just can't get over that the best tactics to use in a shootout situation isn't taking cover or moving slow and easy, no its standing out in the open shooting at nothing in the hopes a bad man will walk into your bullets or just jumping out of cover and shooting in the direction of the enemy and jump back into cover. I went on a 15 killstreak in battlefield strafing in and out of a corner with a shotgun just blindly firing the second I peeked out And on online pvp games as a whole, lone wolf teammates. Yeah don't play the objective, work with the team, support the team, or anything like that. Just gently caress off to a random area of the map hoping thats where the enemy is cause you need to pad your kdr. Why even play an objective based team game? Its even better when you try to get them to "git gud" with being a team player and they instead just wanna poo poo all over you. E: And gently caress it, teammates who just allow a single guy to completely wipe them out. Its especially lovely in Battlefield 4 if you say had a motion sensor down, spotted the guy and managed to drop him to 5% health despite sneaking up on you (cause side passages are such an alien concept to your team) then having to sit there and watch the camera focus on him for 15 seconds as he walks up to the 8 other guys you were with and kills them one by one without a single one making an attempt to get him. Fallout 4 fist weapons and combat. It either has to be a series of bugs or some design decision to make them way worse than melee weapons in pretty every way, and both outcomes are pretty astounding. I love unarmed/punching builds in games, and if that's ever a viable option that is always what I am going to do. I have always done fist weapon stuff in every Fallout game I've played, so it being really bad really ruins the game for me. New Vegas cut down and consolidated a few skills (like big guns, throwing weapons) and since all the perks that applied to fists applied to melee (and vice versa) and getting them all meant leveling up both unarmed and melee really high I just always wondered why they didn't combine them into one single skill, and that is what I was hoping Fallout 4 would do. Instead punching is actually way worse, and let me count the ways:
Unrelated to punching but still related to Fallout 4 there are a lot of story elements that are totally hosed. For a person that lived prewar you take to the whole warrior/scavenger in a nuclear wasteland in legendary loving stride and with very little adjustment. Also hitting on and romancing your companions is super hosed because from your perspective your spouse was just murdered in front of your eyes a few days or weeks ago. I mean no bethesda game after Morrowind had a story worth a god drat but there's a lot about Fallout 4's story that is really stupid.
