i think cheating is one of those things it feels nice to be absolutist about when it's an abstract question designed to help you hate someone, but when it actually affects you it suddenly becomes a negotiable element. kind of like abortion

but really, everyone i've known whose parents weren't faithful had a much more nuanced view on it than i grew up with, under parents who afaik never cheated. this kind of poo poo is just part of some people's lives, and people throughout history have adapted to much more unthinkable things than unfaithfulness

proscribing mandatory maximalist responses to adultery is odd because people from every shade of the political spectrum seem eager to engage in it, unlike most of the moralist proscriptions we inherited from earlier eras

what im really saying is, if bill clinton cheated on hillary clinton maybe hillary clinton's response to the situation is none of your business you victorian creep. i demand that you flagellate yourself

edit: i guess this seems like an overly harsh response to this post from last page but honestly it just got me thinking and i said something unrelated. this post is not an unreasonable hypothesis. otoh she could've just decided her life was good enough, a divorce would be really unpleasant, and she'd deal with it - a decision many spouses with much less to lose in terms of politics have made. that would also be a human thing to do

Skwirl posted:

Like, I know Hillary Clinton is a Machiavallian genius and all, but does anyone else think there's a slight possibility that the reason she didn't divorce Bill during the Lewinsky scandal was because she actually loves him and took the "for better or for worse" part of her marriage vows seriously?

or she might've made the decision to not pursue a divorce for machiavellian reasons. my contention is that judging her for her decision on how to deal with a problem in her marriage, no matter what solution one thinks she pursued, is really not rad (commenting/hypothesizing without judging is fine)

I mean it's possible. I don't personally know either Bill or Hillary, though there is a picture of me shaking Bill's hand a la, Bill's Kennedy photo-op. But even if I did, no one would believe anything that didn't square up with their narrative.

I will say this, her politician persona suggests that she stayed married to bill for political convenience.

You can love someone and still maintain an open marriage or relationship.

a woman whose father had cheated on her mother once mentioned to me, pro-hillaryly, that hillary's dad had cheated on her mom and at some point hillary had said 'there are worse things than cheating' (or something like that? i think this comes out of an anti-clinton biography actually*, but this lady respected hillary for it). this is the kind of perspective i'm talking about - people who don't treat cheating as some kind of forbidden fruit that needs to get turned into moralistic race-based pornography but as a fact of life - a perspective that seems to be ignored across the political spectrum when it's time to score some points, and a perspective that actually humanizes hillary in an interesting way

*i could be wrong about this, wouldnt make any difference to the point

I think the reasoning behind Trump being the greater threat is that he actually has a chance to win whilst Cruz in the GE would get slaughtered.

I keep seeing this sentiment intermittently here and in the USPOL thread and I don't get it. Trump's numbers are historically terrible. He's a Republican frontrunner with a negative approval rating among white males. Women and minorities unanimously want to set him on fire. (Keep in mind that his singularly terrible polling with women came before he said that women should be shot for having abortions and then said they shouldn't and then lied that the question was edited or maybe just too confusing and then walked that back and then walked back the walkback)

probably not, my whole point was that everybody in the public discourse seems to want to treat cheating like some victorian poo poo where we all pretend this is an easy question with an easy answer by ignoring the lived experience of people who have adapted to the reality of infidelity

^^yeah. even if it isn't proven, the accusation is more important than that random anecdote i told that was illustrative of the way we treat adultery in 21st century politics. i don't know what your point is however

even just taking things people admitted as truth, and i said this like 1000 pages ago, it'll be creepy voting to make bill clinton senior-level management, essentially, in an office building where he hosed a subordinate the last time he held a management position there

but voting isn't supposed to make you feel good

i think most people are going to write both stories off because most people ignore sexual assault and rape whenever it's even slightly in their self-interest (as long as it happens to people they dont know), and partisan politics/trying to avoid paying any attention to partisan politics qualifies

im Cynical dwi (deal with it) one way of dealing with it would be to tell me im wrong if i turn out to be wrong just sayin
