I'm firmly of the opinion that if a vehicle/piece of machinery was built before you were born, your opinions on its omissions, safety etc aren't of any concern.

Yeah. Guys like Leno are a rare breed - most people who own seriously old cars, especially ones where replacement parts are literally nonexistent, treat those cars as museum pieces. It might all be there and working just fine, but it's either going to never turn a wheel under power again, or it's only going to do some very slow, very gentle driving in an extremely secure setting. The fact that Leno let James not only drive the Chrysler Turbine Car, but do so at speed in traffic, is pretty loving amazing.

I think this mindset is shifting more towards the Leno end of the scale, though, even at a corporate level. Honda has purchased/borrowed/otherwise obtained a number of important race cars over the years, and with all of the computer-controlled ones, they even make sure to keep a set of the period-correct computers needed to interface with them so that they can be fired up. The ever-decreasing cost of 3D printing will also go a long way to making it possible to fabricate (either directly or by means of inexpensive prototyping) parts for cars that have been long out of production.

Ok, I guess I misunderstood.

However, I'm still ok with cars being used "properly". Bodywork makes me a little twitchy. Everything else? You can replace it.

And even then, you smashed up your NSX setting a personal best at Laguna Seca? That's not as bad as them cutting one up to make a "new" one for The Avengers.

I'm kind of curious to see how this plays out. My 66' YDS3 was first built by my father in law from a box of parts in the late 70's. Apparently he had no issue finding spares. Many years later I rebuilt it and finding parts was a game hunting old stock from eBay and finding old dudes who made things like new seat foams and restored gauges in their sheds. Even then I bought some parts that I'm pretty sure were the last of their kind.

By the time my son takes a shot at it I think 3D printing will be the only way.

Just being able to 3D print any part is probably still a long way off, but it certainly helps already, Leno I think used it to make casting molds. What's more impressive at this point are various CNC machines - just load a brick of metal and go.

I've been experimenting with printing a mockup of what I want to make, then using it as a plug for a decent cask, and going from there. It's a lot of steps, but I can do it in my home office no worries. No need to outsource or buy more expensive equipment. It's only cheap because my personal labor costs are zero.

EDIT: That zero cost of time is a factor with PCB manufacturing for me. I would rather send out a batch to dirtypcb or similar because I couldn't be arsed doing it 100% myself when I can wait a month and get something for $5

This reminded me of Top Gear's mesmerizing Senna tribute where they had Lewis Hamilton drive a McLaren-Honda from Senna's era. Absolutely stunning.

You know what, I was prepared to poo poo all over this - but I'm actually interested. I don't know who Chris Evans is, but as I've said before in this thread, I do like Matt LeBlanc (Episodes is amazing). I've always been a Top Gear fan for the three idiot hosts, not the cars - but this looks similar enough in tone that I guess it will at least be worth checking out.

On the podcast he does the last mention he made of it was that he had an offer from both shows and was considering either direction. He seemed quite upset with Jeremy at the end of the book so it could go either way.

Jeremy seem like beyond the punching he'd be a pain to work for. I wouldn't work for him unless the other 3 made some major things about limiting Jeremy.

The fact that they didnt show chris harris once confirms they are out of touch. The guy tens of millions of views on youtube, and is one of the best automotive journalists to date, let alone compared to his co-stars, yet he isnt worth showing i guess

Also was it just me or were there no humorous bits there.. besides matt leblanc sneezing there wasnt even any physical gags to keep it going (someone intentionally bumping into another car or falling on their rear end) or any of that.

I quite enjoyed it. Mostly because I'm exactly the same working on my kart, I just putter about and take forever while marvelling at the genius of certain components.

I'm also ridiculously jealous of the toolbox he has because I've been searching for one like that for a while now.

There's a James May show each day now. Yesterday was a 1950s telephone. I was intrigued by the quality of the metal components, that's why rotary phone dials are damped so nicely when they rewind. In our day we'll never experience household mechanical objects made from anything other than brittle plastic and chinesium.

Back then, phones were expected to last decades, so they were built with that goal in mind. But with the speed of new technology adoption, who wants to use a 20 year old phone now?

Nobody obviously. But I meant household objects in general, not phones specifically. I had a Kenwood kitchen machine which poo poo the bed after only two years, it's just pot metal and plastic. I bet the first generations of Kenwood machines lasted decades.
