No I think it's pretty god drat unlikely. A singular Canadian province enacting a law does not indicate widespread gender-based abortion in the west. In fact it doesn't even indicate it's presence in that province because it only means that the threat is perceived, not that it is real.

The issues in Canada are largely due to immigrants who come from countries with lots of sex-selective abortions. Western cultures don't have those kinds of problems, although we helped create them in Asia by promoting abortion and tying humanitarian aid to population controls. So yeah. Yay us.

I wasn't arguing that it was likely, just that it was something that happened in civilized countries, counter to the post I was quoting.

article posted:

Canada’s pregnancy specialists and the nation’s radiologists are calling for a halt on using ultrasound for the sole purpose of determining the sex of an unborn fetus.
[...]
The position statement comes amid mounting concerns that in Canada, people are using ultrasound to determine the sex of a fetus early in pregnancy and to have it aborted if it is a girl.

The Harper government condemned gender-selection abortions at the party’s convention in November, while Canada’s leading medical journal has urged medical licensing bodies across the country to rule that doctors should not reveal the sex of the fetus to any woman before about 30 weeks of pregnancy “when an unquestioned abortion is all but impossible.”
[...]
The Canadian Medical Association Journal, in an editorial published in 2012, said research in Canada has found the strongest evidence of sex selection among people from India, China, Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines. “What this means is that many couples who have two daughters and no son selectively get rid of female fetuses until they can ensure that their third-born child is a boy.”

Sex-based abortions are entirely legal, of course. The underlying research showed that for Sikhs, the third child after two girls was twice as likely to be a boy as a girl. 1.4x for Chinese, Japanese, Korean immigrants; 1.9x for families from India.

STRAIGHT TROPIN'

What happened to music?

On August 1st 1981, MTV launched. The attention shifted from the art to the artist, and from the sound to the image. Soon the airwaves were seized by sexy girls & well-coordinated boy bands. Empathy, social awareness and rebellion were replaced with self devotion, vanity & ego. Eventually MTV would stop broadcasting music videos and instead replaced them with reality TV shows, proudly preserving and glamouring the ignorance & arrogance.

Ever wonder how music lost its soul?

Maybe, but it's awkward for me to call my 50 year old boyfriend of 4 years a boyfriend. He's not a boy, I'm not a girl and we're more serious than friends. He's my monogamous sex-chef and designated driver. There's no easy word for that.

Outside of the Something Awful Dot Com Forums, terms can pass or be borrowed from one vernacular to another without it being some kind of ironic, mocking affectation.

Which of course would make it Cultural Appropriation! :catstare:

There are subtle contextual differences in the proper use of bai and boyo, influenced not only by geographical location and generation but your relationship to said bai and how mad thon boyo is when he's on the piss
