Can we all just agree that slavery was bad and move on? I think we all agree that point (I hope we do) and that whatever negligible benefits some slaves may or may not have had, and for whatever reason, really doesn't change that fact?

Slavery was only obsoleted by automation and wage labor and abolition was only allowed to gain traction because slaves weren't economically efficient in the north. :can:

Actually, this very helpful contributor to Southern Agriculturalist from 1833 might have disagreed:

quote:

If I employ a labourer to perform a certain quantum of work per day,
and I agree to pay him a certain amount for the performance of said
work, when he has accomplished it, I of course, have no further claim on
him for his time or services. But how different it is with a slave!

Since we're apparently actually having this discussion, lets also look at this nice quote from former slave William Byrd taken from
Smith, Mark M. 1996. Time, Slavery and Plantation Capitalism in the Ante-Bellum American South. In: Past & Present, No. 150. 142-168 (p. 163):

quote:

Master, he had great iron piece hanging just out side his door and he hit
that every morning at 3:30. The negroes they come tumbling out of their
beds.
If they didn't master he come round in about thirty minutes with
that cat-o-nine tails and begins to let negro have that and when he got
through they knew what that bell was the next morning.
