It's a good example of the value of morbidity in art.

The two classic genres of storytelling are comedy and tragedy. The world has enough comic strips, I think it could use some more tragic strips.

I agree.

Which reminds me, are people still bitching about Prequel/trying to claim it's torture porn, or did they get bored and wander off?

Yes, they got bored and wandered off, including the creator. i think it updates about as often as Dresden Kodak at this point.

Prequel was a bad comic that rapidly got worse, and lost its borrowed appeal when Homestuck went down the tubes as well.

Dresden Codak has really come to it's own now that it finally includes lesbianism. It really is a webcomic

Prequel has had some great updates that involved the main character getting her act together and getting poo poo done, but an IndieGoGo for merch hasn't helped a turnaround of roughly three months to every update, and the last two were (admittedly good) side stories.

Kaz is pretty good at organizing IndieGoGos (he did a big Lego drive for hospitalized kids one or two Christmases ago) but not so much at updating his mostly text-based webcomic.

Having to do the peripheral stuff really kills you. It's not that comics tend to die out "just as they get successful", it's that metrics of success correspond closely with the massive transition to operating a business.

Oh geez, I completely forgot that Diaz was trying to suggest a thing between Kim and that other girl whose name I cannot remember for the life of me.
Probably because it's been an entire year since that last came up.

I know it's extremely hypocritical of me to roll my eyes at "webcomic lesbians" considering I write what can literally be called a gay furry webcomic but GODDDDD

I think the pretension he drapes his webcomic in really does hurt it because your knee jerk reaction to stuff like this is to just roll your eyes.

It also doesn't help that seriously that's all this stupid thing has updated what the gently caress

I am so unsurprised by this development that for a minute I could have sworn it was already a thing. Bearing in mind I last thought about DC over two years ago.

I mean of loving course Aaron "Strong Female Protagonist" Diaz made his buxom super scientist karate action cyborg superwoman also be probably into women. Just,

Does gay mean something else these days? Am I old and no longer with it? The only character I can remember it explicitly coming up for within the comic is Valente.

e/ oh right that's what you meant. Somehow my brain would only interpret "gay comic" as like MoJ or something, ie there being no page where someone isn't talking about how gay they are.

e2/ fwiw it doesn't come across as weird or self-serving, in comparison to DC which very much does.

Honestly it has so far looked like "Petunia completely misinterprets the relationship between Kit and Poppy", so if your intent was "Petunia is completely right about the relationship between Kit and Poppy" then yes you have been a bit too subtle.

I don't like that he won't confront or try to remove the male gaze in his comics and it makes him come off as a pretty big Joss-Whedon-feminist in situations like this tho

I don't even think it's a male gaze thing specifically, everything in his work is fetishized to a ridiculous extent literally or proverbially.

Yeah, Dresden Kodak is Diaz's fetish in visual form, but he tries to present it as an amazing feminist work and that's pretty lovely of him. Even moreso how he ignores or outright insults women who call him on his poo poo, like his fight with Mary Cagle. The dude's ego is massive and he's not nearly as competent as he thinks he is, but his fake progressivism and that his ideals exist entirely in a "do as I say, not as I do" way (except of course he'll never admit that he doesn't at all live up to them) is the worst bit.

Someone post the tweets where he says his extensive martial arts training has given him the ability to walk on ice flawlessly. Or any one of the other garbage tweets from the garbage person that is Diaz. But actually don't because they're awful

At 5 comics in 2016 he's only 30% below his target!

e: Actually on his Patreon where he's getting $4700/mo for "A guaranteed Dresden Codak comic every other week!" it says 7/7 so I have no idea what he's counting by, as his website definitely has five

And seriously 2008. There have only been 62 new pages since 2008. That's drat near a decade of absolute toss.

i liked dresden codak when it was just a series of one-off comics
then it didn't matter how long it took because there wasn't much continuity, and it was just kind of pretentiously goofy, i actually bought a poster of "harvet whatever's 42 essential third act twists" to put on my wall in college
also, i liked the run of filler comics, the one where the guy on the moon eats an egg and becomes god was fun
it's disappointing he's revealed himself to be kind of a jerk

Yeah, I miss when DC was just a comic about abstract one-shot science/philosophy gags, because I will easily admit that Diaz can write some interesting concepts when he's not trying to spin a big dumb story out of it. Gratuitous boob shots aside, I think my favorite one was the page where Kim wakes up in a strange world full of symbiotic creatures and it just turns out to be an alt-prehistory fanfic so she could ship herself with her physics T.A.
