Just finished the expansion after 24 and a half hours according to Steam. Am sure there are probably some bits I missed too. Had a couple of little issues, but nothing really major and nothing unfixable. I will probably replay it for different NPCs

Totally flabbergasted by the reaction to the "SJW" bits though. Seems like a couple of reasonable innocent comments that've been blown completely out of proportion.
As far as "spoiling a classic game series", Baldur's Gate was my first gaming fandom and I don't know where all these asshats have suddenly popped up from.

Holy crap I am such an idiot for believing "Awww yay we're getting David Warner back to do a player voice set, of course there isn't any other reason!". Dude's voice was the thing that hooked me on the whole series, so I was delighted with that, but even more with what we got (and yes, I went and rolled an all new character just so I could use that voice set. Which got a bit confusing at a couple of points as a result)

To be honest, I don't remember Safana having much characterisation in the first place. That's the case for most of the first game NPCs imo, they're simply not as developed as in the second one. She still uses her sexuality to get what she wants, which is most of what I do remember, and was certainly up for manipulating my PC to dance to her tune like she did with Coran in 2. Fair enough and in character I'd say that she tells some guys who don't offer anything useful to her (in my party, Voghiln the derpy skald and Baeloth the squirrel tamer) to gently caress off and stop trying it on with her.

Jaheira I felt suffered in prominence due to the lack of VA, but that's hardly the writers' fault. It's just not the same if the nags aren't voiced! But, I dunno about others, but I think it's effectively poignant for her to actually show a slightly more tender side considering we all know what's coming up soon. It's dramatic irony in my eyes.

David Warner is just perfection. And now I have a cranky sorceror that sounds like him wahey! :D

She took Dragonspear Castle and then attempted to get more crusaders/resources for the job, is my understanding of it. Don't see anything obviously wrong with that, though it lacks punch compared to other grandiose fantasy plans, so I can see why it might be confusing at first.

Kite him and do whatever you can to boost your save vs. death. If a party member gets his gaze debuff (even after the fight is over), kill them yourself or they'll explode and become a ghoul and be permanently dead.

Also take out all the cultists before you kill him.

Very good. To avoid cluttering up the thread, I'd recommend corresponding either over PMs or using Steam (my username is the same there).

Give me some time to power through the expansion and I can have a first pass within about two weeks. In the meantime, I'd recommend looking at the Branwen NPC mod found on this page - it's a heavily commented tutorial mod that walks you through the process of making a custom companion. This page also outlines the key differences of modding the Enhanced Editions versus the originals (in short, there are some extra steps that need to be taken for certain things and fewer steps that need to be taken for others).
Okay, sent you an invite on Steam.
I've read about the Branwen mod being pretty much a tutorial, yeah. Going to check that out and try to reproduce the important parts (as in, add a basic recruitable NPC and make an installer for it). Shouldn't be too hard for two weeks.

I don't think it'd be incredibly interesting for the thread to know about every bug and line of dialogue, but if there's interest I could write some reports about the mod's progress now and then. It's something that I've found pretty helpful when learning a new language or a new toolset anyway.

There wasn't much of a concept at first, I just had the Monk and Half-Orc portrait already. They can't really be used for Baldur's Gate or most other games (PoE doesn't have Orcs or an Asia/Wuxia-inspired culture as a character background), so I decided to just look for portraits of old adventurers and turn what I'd find into an Icewind Dale party. Some old friends coming out of retirement for another go, pretty much.

The Half-Orc Dragon Disciple is easily my favorite, not only because that picture is just really cool, but also because the IWD Sorcerer voice set is just perfect for him:

Side note, it's surprisingly hard to find decent pictures of old fantasy witches, it's either green-skinned Oz/fairy tale crones or, well, sexy girls with pointy hats.

I had that exact problem when trying to find a suitable picture to represent a player's character in MapTool a while back. I found googling "crone" actually got much better results than googling "witch", although it still took a bit of sifting.

It''ll say on the title screen. No fixmods are necessary, SCS is the way to go for difficultymods, and i'd stay away from the additional NPC mods :barf:

Also I get why recruiting Viconia reduces your reputation. I also get why generally speaking, good aligned party members don't like most of the things you do that would reduce your reputation. But man, the two together really does paint all the good aligned party members are insufferable racists, especially since the dialogue options that lead to her recruitment seem like they would be the typical "good" choice in any normal rpg.

There's a mod for BGII, maybe also BGI, that creates a seperate Virtue system, so you can have an evil character who maintains good PR and a good character dragging around reputation wrecking NPCs without the rest of the party getting too worked up.

On that note, why are Viconia, Baeloth, and M'kinn being allowed to just hang around the Flaming Fist camp? For all the party grumbles about them and the reputation drop, they don't seem to be treated that different. Maybe there's stuff in dialogue I haven't seen.

Are the romances in BG1NPC representative of/based on those in BG2? If so I will deliberately avoid them if I take this character through BG2 because I ended up on Branwen's romance path and it's incredibly tedious and annoying. Last playthrough they never triggered because I had no compatible characters after I dismissed Jaheira.

No I haven't I was going to play BG1 and BG2 first , plus it looks like it's really buggy right now so I'll wait.

What's a good not overpowered but not underpowered class that I'm going to really enjoy? I am not particular to mages or clerics.

Lure of Sirine's Call is a good quest mod.
Sword Coast Stratagems if you want to make the game more difficult. I'd read what each component of SCS does, though, there are some that just add tedium imo.

Hollismason posted:

Rangers are okay.

The only things you should absolutely stay away from are Beastmasters and Wizard Slayers.
Single-classed Thieves are also pretty bad, but multi-classed ones are fine.
Monks are kinda terrible for at least the first half of Baldur's Gate 1, which is a long time.

If you play an Archer or Kensai, you'll need to consider some equipment choices.

Mostly based on them, except with added flirts that pop up from time to time.
Branwen's is one of the better ones as far as I remember, so if you don't like hers, you probably won't like the rest, either.

I think I'm going to mod in a dialogue option for the parlay bit after infiltrating the castle. "Hey Caelar? I saw your lieutenant talking to a loving archfiend earlier. Also I found this book which I'm pretty sure belonged to one of his underlings, detailing how you need my blood to open the portal to Avernus, but by it's tone I'm pretty sure those souls you're trying to rescue don't actually exist and your just going to unleash a horde of devils."

Dragonspear has inherited BG1's bad habit of putting hints about the plot in diaries and such and then not letting the player use them to affect the story. The original game has its age as an excuse, this does not.

Also I'd like a Planescape Torment: Enhanced Edition. On Windows 8 onwards the desktop keeps flickering through while playing the game and the only fix I know of it is to kill Explorer.exe before loading the game up which is a pain.

This is pretty common with older games, and there's a good chance you already know this, but just in case it might help anyone, there's an easy fix to save you the trouble of having to manually end/restart explorer.exe every time you want to play a game with this issue. Open Notepad and copy and paste the following:

code:
@echo off
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
game.exe
Start explorer.exe
Replace "game.exe" with the name of the game's executable, save as a .bat file in the same folder as said executable, and use that whenever you want to play the game. If you want to go the extra mile and make it as seamless as possible, you can give the batch file the game's icon and replace any desktop/start menu shortcuts with shortcuts to it as well.
